25.01.2022 Today the Orara High School Green Leaders did a waste audit on our bins. Students inspected and sorted the waste in 8 bins that had been used between the start of the day up to the end of recess. They found 7kg of plastic waste that goes into landfill. Paper waste was sorted for plastics that don't belong and then recycled. Also found were additional empty cans and poppa's that were added to our Return and Earn Waste Management bins.... The first delivery of recyclables was made to the Return and Earn, receiving $31.70 which will go towards SRC fundraising.

22.01.2022 Sun and UV at School In the lead up to summer, students will learn about sun protection, and how to make healthy, safe and proactive choices that reduce their risk of skin cancer. Statistics show that melanoma is the most common cancer affecting young Australians aged 15-24. With that in mind, we will be teaching students about the dangers of sun exposure and that skin cancer prevention starts with practising sun-safe behaviours at school. For more information on the Sun and UV at School initiative, see www.cancer.nsw.gov.au/sun-school

16.01.2022 Dear Parents & Carers, Further to my communication to you last week dated 19 August 2020 with respect to the latest COVID-19 guidelines issued by the NSW Department of Education, I would like to reiterate that parents/carers and other non-essential visitors are unfortunately not allowed on our school site at present. However, if parents/carers need to visit the school for canteen or uniform shop purposes, face-to-face parent/teacher meetings that are essential (e.g. to discus...s disciplinary or welfare matters) or delivering enrolment paperwork or other important documentation, these exceptions are permitted but please be aware that you will be required to complete a NSW Department of Education External Visitors to School Site form each time you visit the school. The requirement to complete this form also extends to our external visitors such as our delivery drivers. The purpose of the External Visitors to School Site Form is that each person that signs the form is acknowledging such matters as they are well and have no flu like illness, have reviewed and will follow the NSW Health advice of the day while on the school site and for contact tracing purposes in the event a positive COVID-19 case is confirmed around the period of time you visited the school. For your assistance, I have attached a copy of the External Visitors to School Site Form that you may wish to read and familiarise yourself with in the event an essential need arises to attend the school. You will be required to sign the form when you present to our Administration Office. I also understand that there may be an occasion that you might need to attend the school to pick up your student if for example, a family emergency arises, in which case we would appreciate if you could telephone the school in advance if possible but please be aware you will still be required to sign the form. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact the Administration Office and I look forward to continuing to work with our school community to keep all students, staff and visitors safe.

01.01.2022 Dear Parents and Carers This week we have had students looking at their technology use and supporting them to make visible shifts in their habits where necessary. This Friday, the 27th of November 2020 Orara High School will be having "Phone Free Friday" where students are encouraged to leave their device at home. Many staff will also be supporting this and leaving their device at home. ... This would be a great time to discuss your child's technology use and if possible support them by committing to go without your phone for the day. We understand that before and after school commitments may make it hard for your child to be without a phone however whilst at school your child can be contacted through the front office by calling 6652 1077. There is an opportunity for your child to write about their experience and win a $50 prize from "Safe on Social". See below for details. Compose a reflective piece of writing that describes your experience of going phone free for a day. Include your initial expectations, thoughts, feelings and reflections of the journey. What were your apprehensions? Was it easier than you thought it would be? Harder? What were your fears? What did you learn? Would you do it again? Aim for 250 words. You could win a $50 voucher and your piece of writing might be used for publication purposes to encourage others to go phone free on a Friday.
