01.01.2022 Here's a bit of info from out recent trip up north. On Sunday 2 April, a team of volunteers flew to North Queensland in response to the BIA’s call for support for members affected by Cyclone Debbie which hit last week. Led by our Queensland Manager, Aaron McKenna, the team consists of Peter (Zoob) and Jackson Kilpatrick from Orca Marine Services, John Lawler from Empire Marina, Lars Steele-Mills from d’Albora Marinas, Ryan Hogan from Superior Jetties, Alister Copley from CM-C...onsulting, freelancer Bobby Hale, and BIA Past President and Life Member Doug Olding. On Monday, Aaron met with all members in Airlie Beach and established communications with Hamilton Island. All members were offered assistance, and the team has worked through some immediate priorities.Abell Point Marina has suffered significant damage to the marina, with broken pontoon fingers etc. The BIA team were asked to make repairs to two marina arms as a priority so boats could be moved from adjacent damaged berths. This was completed on Tuesday. It’s worth noting that this could not have been achieved without Peter from ORCA, who is leading the repair team. It’s important to note that repairs are only temporary and meant to make the marina as stable and secure as possible, so that operations can resume. As of Wednesday, 17 broken hinges were replaced, and a temporary solution with chains was designed to secure two broken fingers. The team is also helping charter operators with preparing boats, checking systems starting up and checking engine operation, replacing rigging components, installing sails and resetting boats and checking for any damage, cleaning bilges etc. The crew has assisted to get 3 charter boats back into service so far. They’ve also helped preparing supporting work boats, cleaned up tenders and checked systems to get boats back into operation. Today some of the guys are making repairs to the Marine Parks and Wildlife wharf and 3 of the guys are continuing to assist charter operators with preparing boats. Further work in other areas will continue through the week. Aaron reports that we have ended up with an extremely good crew, all of whom have put in a huge effort and there is a great feeling of comradery. Doug Olding has been supporting the crew, making sure everyone is working safely. He has also taken on a bit of a compliance role, identifying hazards and making public areas a safe as possible. Our thanks also go to those who have contributed financially to the support effort, so far: Darling Harbour Marina, Hawkesbury River Holdings, Marmong Point, Cronulla Marina, Clontarf Marina, Jeanneau Australia and Jeanneau France. Further donations can be made to the BIA account at St George Bank, BSB: 332 027, Account: 552 004 720, marked Cyclone Relief, or by cheque made out to BIA Cyclone Relief. https://www.bia.org.au/documents/item/589
