22.01.2022 It has been a while since I updated Steve and Janine's progress. After a initial burst of activity things slowed down, but Steve had a vision for his new studio.... He obviously wanted a building that was as fire resistant as it could be and for that reason he chose to build using steel farm building technology and, having observed that buildings like this around him did in fact not burn but did collapse, he has used his refractory knowledge and come up with additional materials to be secure against the intense heat of the next bushfire, for, as he says, they will come again and they will be more intense as the climate warms. Steve's vision was to have it built so it was sympathetic to the buildings already in place. He decided that to get something that was functional but also as aesthetic as his last mud brick studio he would mimic the form of his house. The builders of farm buildings are not used to the complexity of what he came up with, 5 separate building that flowed into each other, studio, gallery, kiln room, machinery workshop, clay processing and rock crushing rooms and lots of storage for materials. Those of you who follow his blog know that this has been a quite arduous. There have been lots of delays, but on Christmas Eve, 12 moths after the devastating fires and Steve's miraculous survival in his "coffin kiln", the construction of the shell is complete. The best way to see how his vision has transformed into reality is to see the photos I am adding. You will note the use of old galvanised steel to blend in with the other buildings on his land. Steve is still looking for rusty galvanised corrugated roofing material if you have any? See more

15.01.2022 Well all the cleanup is mostly finished, and those who follow Steve's blog will know he has started rebuilding his front fence. Every year Steve and Janine Att...end the Adelaides writers festival and follow it with Womad and they have taken the opportunity to get away this year, to give them some breathing space and to recover a little from their ordeal. Steve has informed me that Council has approved their plans for their temporary workshop and eventual carport in a record 7 days and this Friday the insurance company paid out the full insurance on their Studio and Kiln Factory. This is a blessing as they were originally projecting only covering half saying the buildings were underinsured. Sanity has prevailed. That two bits of good news means they are in a good position to be able to build a new bushfire rated studio. That said they lost a lot and whilst we have been able to source replacement kick wheels for them both there are bits of equipment that are hard to source. If you or anyone you know has a BALL MILL they no longer need please contact me. The fund raising goes on, Last night the Pots for Potters Exhibition opened at Kerrie Lowe Gallery in Newtown with pots donated by over 80 potters and all of the sales being distributed amongst those potters who lost so much. The gallery is forgoing its commission, so thank you Kerrie and Elizabeth. There were lots of sales and there are some real bargains to be found, the show is open until 21st march so get in quick for this very worthy cause. See more
15.01.2022 Part 2. This year at the Jianzhan Market in Jianyang I saw what I thought was the same glaze, but no, this one really is gold brushed, very expertly, over an oil spot glaze and also imitating Hares Fur. Extraordinary!
