25.01.2022 Thinking of all our English followers as you prepare to head back into another devastating lockdown this week. (The nation’s pets and wildlife will love it though!) We are sorry to hear that some of you are also very unwell with the dreadful virus, and wish you a swift and full recovery. With all our love from far away in Orchid Valley, together with hope for better times ahead, hold strong England. Z & J
24.01.2022 WE ARE NOT IN THE SAME BOAT ... I heard that we are all in the same boat, but its not like that. We are in the same storm, but not in the same boat. Your ship ...could be shipwrecked and mine might not be. Or vice versa. For some, quarantine is optimal. A moment of reflection, of re-connection, easy in flip flops, with a cocktail or coffee. For others, this is a desperate financial & family crisis. For some that live alone theyre facing endless loneliness. While for others it is peace, rest & time with their mother, father, sons & daughters. With the $600 weekly increase in unemployment some are bringing in more money to their households than they were working. Others are working more hours for less money due to pay cuts or loss in sales. Some families of 4 just received $3400 from the stimulus while other families of 4 saw $0. Some were concerned about getting a certain candy for Easter while others were concerned if there would be enough bread, milk and eggs for the weekend. Some want to go back to work because they dont qualify for unemployment and are running out of money. Others want to kill those who break the quarantine. Some are home spending 2-3 hours/day helping their child with online schooling while others are spending 2-3 hours/day to educate their children on top of a 10-12 hour workday. Some have experienced the near death of the virus, some have already lost someone from it and some are not sure if their loved ones are going to make it. Others dont believe this is a big deal. Some have faith in God and expect miracles during this 2020. Others say the worst is yet to come. So, friends, we are not in the same boat. We are going through a time when our perceptions and needs are completely different. Each of us will emerge, in our own way, from this storm. It is very important to see beyond what is seen at first glance. Not just looking, actually seeing. We are all on different ships during this storm experiencing a very different journey. 24.01.2022 If you happen to be hanging around the Perth Virgin business lounge next Thursday, say gday to Jahna! Shell be easy to spot: looks like a younger version of Patsy from Absolutely Fabulous, with a glass of champagne in one hand, a pet body bag in the other, and a garden memorial cross sticking out of her Gucci handbag. #AsYouDo #RareBreed JT is looking forward to traveling to the Gold Coast to show off The Orchid Valley Collection of sympathy gifts and commemorat...ive items at the first ever Australian Conference hosted by the International Association of Pet Cemeteries and Crematories, whilst catching up with our friends at Pets in Peace and Ruperts Pet Cremation & Transport. 22.01.2022 For some of you, home is where the herd is, and we have been honoured to help comfort what is perhaps a surprisingly large number of families left behind by their special cows. This beautiful girl may have had her final lap cuddle with Gee, but her character and companionship will continue to live on through her handsome baby boy Dobby. Rest easy, Daisy. Your little lad is in the safest of hands with your beloved Gee....
22.01.2022 At four years of age, Shadow lost his eyes, but found his beloved Janet. Fourteen years of pure imagination later, we are heartbroken for her that Shadow has left his beautiful imaginary world. What a fulfilling life dear Janet gave her Lancashire lad, and for such a very long time..... After years of seeing Janet in his dreams, may Shadow find his sight amongst the stars and peacefully watch over her, always.

21.01.2022 This thoughtful gift offering heartfelt thanks from Evie to Ruperts Pet Cremation & Transport not only gave Eddies beautiful end of life carers a greatly appreciated reward, but would also have elevated sweet Evies own mood. By her family lovingly providing her with an opportunity to acknowledge those who had helped her beloved pet, Evie found a healthy avenue to process everything that had happened. We think her picture for our friends at Ruperts is gorgeous, and we... wish her love and strength through this time. The simple act of giving is proven to be a form of healing, and we gently encourage all of you to experience this for yourselves by taking a few moments, like Evie did, to sincerely thank the veterinary team and crematorium staff who kindly help, or have helped your pet at their journeys end. It will honestly lift your spirits, and theirs. Xx With love from Orchid Valley, Z & J
21.01.2022 There is no way that any of this will be left to enjoy for actual Easter here in Orchid Valley....but it looks decorative and pretty in the meantime, whilst somehow justifying the rather festive pandemic drinking habit thats been going on here lately!
19.01.2022 Dedicated to Rudy & Tessa, as they enjoy the rest of his days together in Greece.... "Dogs come into our lives to teach us about love. They depart to teach us about loss. A new dog never replaces an old dog. It merely expands the heart." ....Erica Jong

17.01.2022 Some important questions answered about COVID-19 and your pets. I have collated this information from the latest recommendations provided by the World Health Or...ganisation, Australian Veterinary Association and University Of Illinois College of Veterinary medicine. 1.Can pets spread COVID-19 to humans? At this time, experts believe it is very unlikely. There is no evidence that companion animals, including pets, can spread the COVID-19 virus or that pets can become sick. The primary source of transmission remains human-to-human contact, and the best way to reduce your risk is to practice effective hand hygiene. 2. Can humans infect their pets ? At this point, there is no evidence that companion animals can become sick from COVID-19. One dog in Hong Kong showed a weak positive test result in samples from nasal and oral cavities. This is the only known instance world wide. It is thought to be from human- animal transmission but it is NOT cause for alarm. It is important to note this dog is not sick or showing any signs of illness. Being infected does not mean that the dog is infectious and capable of spreading the virus. More studies are being done on this dog. This canine patient was in close contact with an infected human, who was likely shedding large quantities of the virus and this possibly led to the virus being in the dogs nose. There is still no indication that pets can shed the virus or get sick from the virus at this time. 3. If someone has COVID- 19 should they handle their pets? Out of caution, it is recommended that people sick with COVID-19 limit contact with animals until more information is known about the virus. So, if you are ill with COVID-19, avoid close contact with your pet such as feeding, playing and patting.Dont share food, kiss, or hug them; and wash your hands before and after any contact with your pet. . 4. Although they cant become sick from COVID-19, could a pet potentially serve as a conduit of infection between people? It is possible that a person with COVID-19 could contaminate their pet by sneezing or coughing and then another person could touch that animal and contract the disease. Veterinary experts believe that the risk of transmission this way is low. Out of caution, it is recommended that pet owners who are sick with COVID-19 take precautionary steps to limit close contact with their pets. Please remember, the primary source of transmission remains human- human contact. 4. Is there a COVID-19 vaccine for dogs and cats? There is currently no vaccine for COVID-19 for people or animals. It is important to note, there are other coronaviruses that cause several common diseases in domestic animals. Many dogs, for example, are vaccinated for another species of coronavirus (Canine Coronavirus) as puppies but this vaccine does not cross protect for COVID-19. 5. How do I plan for pets if I get ill? There is no need to panic but please make a plan now for your pets in case you get ill. Discuss with family and friends. Research boarding kennels if necessary. Make sure your pets vaccines, worming and flea control are up to date. Document any medications your pet may need. Make sure microchip details are up to date and that your pet is wearing an ID tag. - Make sure you have * A crate for transport * Food supplies for 2 weeks * Medical supplies * Poo bags * Kitty litter for cats. * Treats PLEASE only rely on credible sources such as the World Health Organisation for your information - they will update as the situation evolves. There is a lot of misinformation causing panic and unnecessary concern. In this very unsettling time, I know I am extremely thankful to have the companionship of my own four-legged friends and am very glad there is no reason for concern about our pets and COVID-19 and this time. Please keep up the social distancing and good hygiene. ** Photo credit Meagan Harding for Houndztooth

14.01.2022 So, in breaking news, it turns out that all the lovely stuff we may have said about living in harmony with all Gods creatures, and every animal being deserving of a dignified passing, may not, in actual fact, be entirely true to our beliefs.... ....Lets just say that right now, the Orchid Valley office looks like a $!&@#%* shambles, and a steadying glass of wine may have been poured. Rest easy, Handspan.

12.01.2022 To all small heroes with big hearts." Far away in Serbia, there stands a commemorative statue in honour of an incredibly brave little dachshund by the name of Leo. The sort of chap who preferred to avoid confrontation, Leo tended to shy away from other dogs.until the day he saw a ferocious hound thrice his size viciously attacking a young girl in the park, and ran courageously to her defence. ... As the mauling dog turned on the bold little dachshund who was snapping at his leg, the wounded girl was set free. But Leo didnt stand a chance.and sadly paid with his life. The statue is located in the same Serbian park, so that Leo can continue to watch over all of the children playing. There is a quote underneath which reads: To all small heroes with big hearts., which is a true testament to the courageous nature of a very brave little dog named Leo, who sacrificed his life to save a child he didnt know.

10.01.2022 Sobering, but wise advice from one of our favourite veterinary clinics: please, please vaccinate your dogs to protect them from parvovirus, and save you from the heartache of a preventable nightmare. Our thoughts are with those of you who have been touched by the devastation of this dreadful virus. Xx

09.01.2022 You wouldn’t believe how many of these treats result in beloved fur children being laid to rest in our Orchid Valley forever beds due to choking, intestinal blockages and complications. Please just don’t purchase them. x
09.01.2022 In case you’ve ever wondered....! It’s a thing. Thank goodness for brave pets like Freddie, who, together with the support of a caring family, unknowingly save other beautiful dogs from needing to be laid to rest in our forever beds when tomorrow starts without them because a blood donor was unavailable. We wish Princessa a good recovery and a healthy, joyful life. Thanks to darling Freddie, she and her family have been given the gift of more time together. They have been truly blessed.

04.01.2022 To our overseas followers: We humbly ask you to take a moment to scroll through Facebook and find an Australian wildlife or veterinary fund that resonates with you, and please give whatever you can via their link. Just something, anything, towards helping the beautiful animals who have managed to survive the horrific bushfires which have devastated their homes. ... Every single donation will help them, no matter how small you may think yours is. Our husbands are volunteer firefighters on standby here in rural Western Australia, where we are currently quite safe, but our hearts are breaking for our friends and all creatures great and small in the East. Please give whatever you can to the animals of Australia at this tragic time. Z & J Xx

02.01.2022 How your vet sees euthanasia..... So, you bring me this puppy - she kisses my face, devours the cookies I offer, and our friendship starts. Several visits late...r, he starts to learn where all the cookie jars are in the clinic, and that lady in the white coat, well shes okay.... Fast forward many visits later, now I am in love with your dog and your whole family because, well, you are just really really good people and I have not only watched that pup turn into a really sweet family member, but I got to watch the kids grow every year and be a very small part of your journey. Remember that time she ate your teenage daughters thong underwear? yeah we all had a good laugh over that once surgery was done and she was recovered. Your daughter probably never forgave me for bagging that up and showing the whole fam-jam when they came to pick her up from the clinic. So many adventures, so little time..... And here we are, fifteen or so odd years later, having to say goodbye. Hes got heart disease and I cant fix it anymore. Shes got cancer and there is no cure. He has arthritis and the meds just arent working. I want her to live forever for you. I want that so badly it hurts. I feel like I have failed him and you when I have run out of options to keep them, and you, comfortable and happy. So now its time, and I am supposed to be professional. Objective. I am the doctor. Calm. Cool. Collected. Always under control. F~*k that. I have known you and her for a third of my life, and most of my professional career. But I keep it together. My superhuman amazing technicians have put the catheter in. My support staff from reception to assistants have done all the paperwork. Trust me they may not show it but their hearts are breaking for you. They have been there. They know. And they know you and care about you too. And I have the needle in the pocket of my white coat. The same pocket that was always full of treats for him. I take a deep yoga breath and come into the room. Gotta stay strong now....... Shes giving me that sweet look she always does, the one that is followed by puppy kisses and a glance at the cookie jar. But she is too weak now. She is ready. You are not. I am not. But this shit has to happen because we love her too much to let her suffer. She would keep going as long as we asked her too. But we cant ask her to anymore. Its not fair to her. I wish our human hearts could be so giving all the time. I wish I could be the person my dog thinks I am. I wish I wish i wish I could find a way for them to live forever. But I dont have those magical powers. I am just a vet. So we kiss him back, not much left of his body that still works, but that old tail wags, just enough that I lose my shit on the inside but I try not to cry. Gotta stay strong. Her body relaxes, she is in your arms and your are sobbing. Another family has lost one of its most cherished members. I put my stethoscope to her heart to make sure it has stopped but she is held so tight to your chest that maybe that is your heart I hear pounding or maybe its mine and all the blood rushing through my ears as I try so so so hard not to turn into a blubbering mess. Confirmed, he has passed. You lay him gently on the table and we hug tightly as you go to leave. The door closes behind you and I dont know if you hear this, but I sob hysterically into your pets ear. She is gone, he will be missed, and you have to face what I know will be one of the hardest parts of today. Entering that house and they are not there to greet you. Please know that I know how you feel. As you leave the clinic I just wish with every fibre of my being that you never had to face that. I wish they could live forever. And please know, I am so grateful that I was a small part of your journey. Love always, Your vet.
