08.01.2022 I have spent most of this week in and around Scone, in the NSW Hunter Valley, working with Team Rubicon Australia providing assistance to drought effected farmers. Team Rubicon is a veterans-led organisation that provides support to communities impacted by disasters and I was working with more than 30 members of Team Rubicon, who are affectionally known as ‘greyshirts’. Together with the farmers, we helped repair fences and clear downed trees. ... We also provided general support to some of the most affected people in the Upper Hunter community. They expressed amazement that Team Rubicon volunteers would donate their time and energy to travel to Scone from as far away as Perth to help out in any way they could, but it was our privilege to be there and an honour to stand shoulder to shoulder with some of the most resilient Australians you’re ever likely to meet. Despite the tough time they’re going through, they’ve lost none of their humour and their positive attitudes won our respect - we’re all enriched by the time we spent with them. Sure we worked hard, but perhaps the greatest benefit we provided was reminding a group of hard working Australians down on their luck that they were not forgotten. Through a desire to help we created a connection with some families that has help remind them that are not alone. The benefits of a Team Rubicon operation flow both ways, by helping the members of this community our greyshirts reconnected with a sense of purpose that for many has been difficult to find since leaving their respective services. As well as rediscovering a sense purpose members got to spend time with like minded team members and establish meaningful connections. A poignant experience for me was seeing the sacrifices made by a 19 year old farmer’s son who had forgone the usual pursuits teenage boys to stay on the farm and help his parents in a time of need. Another farmer mentioned that in 62 years he had only left the farm on a single occasion to travel to Perth for his honeymoon. He felt an amazingly strong sense of connection to his land and was happy to spend all of his time on his farm. Our moments shared with him this week were fleeting, but they’ll stay with us for some time to come.
