23.01.2022 As a Permaculture based Gardening/Landscape Buisness we take water security seriously. After last summer's extended dry period and seeing how the water delivery companies capitalized on the situation (charging over $400 for 8000L water delivered in "emergency") I was horrified. Water is key to life..... We have successfully installed over 120,000L of water storage for clients and neighbors in the Hinterland. We use local contractors to do the plumbing works and often sourcing 2nd hand tanks keeps costs down. The quality of the water you catch is also important. Keeping gutters clean, checking filters, retrofitting existing systems with first flush diverters and pruning over hanging branches from your roof are all things that we integrate into our scheduled gardening work. Do you have enough water storage to see your household through the next extended dry period? Rains coming

23.01.2022 Some pics of our work. It's always nice to return to a site and see the abundance that has grown

21.01.2022 Awwww yeah! 2 packed days of discussions and presentations from an amazing panel of peeps. Stream it live or replay it when it suits you. Have a read through the topics, these are the messages we need to hear to move forward into a better future. Be the change

18.01.2022 Spring is in full swing and the patch at home is just booming. These misty mornings are such a beautiful sight. More than 20 producing fruit trees and 15 wicking beds on less than a 1/4 acre block grows us more than we eat so our surplus gets shared amongst neighbors, family, friends and Organic Flows regular clients.

17.01.2022 Taking responsibility for the quality if our rain water is important and it can be done without using plastic based throw away water filter cartridges. A couple ladders, sump pump, hose and some basic household cleaning tools and viola

11.01.2022 Flowers for beauty, pollinators and diversity. This row of marigolds, cosmos and sun flowers has taken off and is starting to really put on a show on the verge. Comfrey in the front line to act as a physical barrier against the fast growing Kikuya grass and a row of vetiver grass up top for biomass and soil stabilization.

09.01.2022 Boom ! 2 of the purple cauliflowers just about prime for harvesting and snow peas on the menu tonight.

08.01.2022 Crop protection can come in many forms but when you are dealing with Queenlsand fruit fly there is no better method than a physical barrier. First year obtaining a yield from this beautiful peach tree. 3 years ago it was a huge unmanaged monster of a thing but I have managed to shape it back to decent form and it's going great .

08.01.2022 We love working our magic in the beautifully landscaped gardens. So much diversity of natives, exotics and edible plants in a well structured landscape. One thing we really noticed was the abundance of bird and insect life and how these guys were being supported by the dense canopies of the native and exotic shrubs. The 6 or so fruit trees planted strategically through the gardens showed few signs of pest damage which reflects on the bird and predatory insect populations. ... Diversity brings balance in nature

07.01.2022 This is how friends and community get together up in the hills. What a cracker way to spend a Saturday connecting, contributing and creating a more resilient future.

07.01.2022 Food forest # 2 for 2020 Here in beautiful Montville we have just done the first follow up work in the food forest since planting out happened in April. All the fruit trees recieved a bit of a spring feed and some worm castings. Re mulched the beds and started to interplant the contour lines with self seeding herbs, flowers and veggies. ... Seeing great results from 0 maintenance over the past 5 months (besides the initial watering in after planting) This food forest follows a mixed orchard layout with over 30 fruit trees planted on contour. At least 5 support species have been planted with every fruit tree. Every alternating contour is just native shrubs and small trees with a contour row of vetiver grass. This is to increase habitat for wildlife in the food forest and also to grow biomass for future on site mulching. Looking forward to planting it out heavily this spring with mor ground cover, flowers, herbs and veggies.

06.01.2022 Figured out why one of the taps on a clients property has very little pressure Tibouchina 1 - Tap 0

04.01.2022 Time to prep for some much needed rain. Install extra water tanks - who knows how long the next dry period might be... Time to catch and store more clean rainwater. Mulch heavily for moisture retention and stability. Inspect your large trees for dangerous limbs and disease - get an arborists opinion if unsure. Plant, plant and plant some more.... What's your flood plan? Aquire comfortable gumboots See more

04.01.2022 Great read from Jerry Coleby-Williams. Broad leaf herbicides are bad news and all to often misused. And don't get me started on "weed and feed".. how can you buy into the thought that spraying something that kills and fertilizers at the same time is going to be effective..??

02.01.2022 Little bit of avocado magic. I've had the pleasure of caring for these old avocado trees for about 6 years. Shaping them over the years to spread horizontally and kept low enough to make harvesting manageable. Very little input (organic only), occasional mulching to reduce weed and grass competition and no irrigation has brought these old trees back to full production after many years of degrading chemical maintenance. ... One even supports a hive of bees that moved in 6 Months ago.. a true self pollinating tree Now these avocado trees are being integrated into a food forest system that will support them even more through diversity. Grateful for the opportunities this community has offered, let's regenerate the Hinterland and grow the community

02.01.2022 Flame weeding In the right context flame weeding is an effective alternative to herbicide application. Since Organic Flow Gardening sprouted I have not used any synthetic pesticides or fertilizers. ... Coming from a 10 year journey in the dirty horticulture industry to seeking some more natural methods to finding permaculture has been a wild ride. 1000s of hours of hand weeding, observing weeds and their life cycles, root growth, habits, seed spread, growing conditions, what they express about the soil and the micro climates they grow in. I've picked up a trick or 2 I guess what I'm trying to say is weed management has always been a large part of my work.... We are now offering flame weeding services for those in the Hinterland seeking an alternative to the industry norm of round up and the likes. Perfect solution for those prolific seedy weeds that grow in gravel paths, driveways, spoon drains, rock walls and other similar situations. Following a safe work procedure this task is carried out quickly and effectively by burning undesirable weeds and seeds saving us back breaking work. Providing long term solutions by breaking the life cycle of weeds like Crows Foot, Caustic Weed, Oxalis, Bindis, Cobblers pegs, Fleabane, Wondering Jew, Flick Weed, Chic Weed and even dealing with tree seedlings like Privet and Silky Oaks. Instant results, no residual herbicides and fast seed burning.

01.01.2022 Pretty stoked with the 1kg weigh in. This purple cauliflower was grown in one of my wicking beds in the insect exclusion tunnel. Absolutely no cabbage moth damage, physical barrier is the go for easy Brassicas growing.... Harvesting early in the morning is the way to ensure your home grown produce is at its peak in nutrient density - food is medicine. Now to make some room in fridge haha.
