25.01.2022 With warm, spring weather arriving, now is a good time to harvest any developed brassicas in your garden before they start going to seed. Things like rocket, radishes, turnips, cabbages and asian greens are all prone to bolt at this time of year. We've also noticed a huge increase in cabbage white butterflies milling about the farm, so remember to net any brassica seedlings that you want to keep safe! ~ Thanks for the tip @pocketcityfarms! ~ @pocketcityfarms... . . . #gadigalland #urbanfarm #urbanfarming #cityfarm #organic #localfood #growyourown #freshveg #harvest #pocketcityfarms #community #yourplanet #abcaustralia #organicgardenermag #gardenshelptheplanet See more

24.01.2022 The best thing about eating insects is they're all around us, and despite some worrying trends in global declines, are still pretty abundant. But in Australia, we're not sold on the positives of eating insects and struggle with the gross factor. Would you give them a go?

24.01.2022 We totally agree with Justin Russell that from a gardeners perspective, theres not much that can compete for pure pleasure than a wheelbarrow load of homemade compost. This pile of compost was made the cold/slow, what Justin calls let it rot way, so its around a year old. Its a fungal dominant (rather than bacteria dominant) approach that means the compost is great at improving soil for newly planted trees.ts an incredibly simple process. 21.01.2022 Here at OG we like the way @mistycreek.agroforestry think and garden/farm: . Exposed soil is an open wound In both Syntropic Agroforestry and Holistic Management, that has influenced our way of farming most, the first tenet is to always cover the soil. ... Be generrrrous, sir says Ernest Gotsch when it comes to covering the soil with organic matter. Its the organic matter that will guarantee the best conditions for the development of the soils microflora and microfauna. These organisms are closely related to the availability of the necessary nutrients for plants and for structuring the soil. They improve the water cycle, and by making nutrients more available to plants, allowing higher density of leaf area to maximise photosynthesis. This is a positive feedback loop that if not interrupted leads to ever increasing abundance. ~ @agendagotsch @mistycreek.agroforestry . . #soilhealth #mulch #patchhappy #nobaresoilleftbehind #keepgrowing #foodforestry #abundance #agrosyntropy #permaculture #knowyourfarmer #localfoodmovement #agendagotsch #landstewardship #ernstgotsch #mistycreekagroforestry #yourplanet #abcaustralia #organicgardenermag #gardenshelptheplanet

19.01.2022 According to the World Wildlife Fund, we’ve used more plastic since the year 2000 than in all the decades leading up to that date. 16.01.2022 The latest favourite in Justin Russell's patch is wasabi Mazuma. According to Justin: 'Whoever says wasabi is one of the most challenging plants to grow is kinda kidding themselves. Its actually really easy. To grow it really well at a commercial standard is more challenging, but at home... I have found it a cinch. The plant in the pic has been through the current mega-drought without anything more than a daily watering (some people build little humidicribs and mulch with ...ice and do all kinds of stuff for their wasabi plants). Its in a pot with gravel in the base for drainage, and in a position on the eastern side of the house that gets morning sun until about 11am. I fed the plant a few weeks ago ahead of its spring flush of growth and its responding well. Soon, I'll pull it out of the pot and divide it. I reckons its worth having a few plants on the go for decent stem production (the stem is the bit you grate, but all parts of the plant are edible) and if youve ever experienced the gastrogasmic sensation of eating real wasabi, youll agree that its worth the effort. Sometimes the mythology around plants is completely misplaced. In the case of wasabi, it should be around the act of eating the plant, not the act of growing it. The later is pretty simple.' ~ @jrhalfmoonfarm . . . . #wasabi #mazuma #planting #plantingmyths #mythbuster #growyourown #growfood #yourplanet #abcaustralia #organicgardenermag #gardenshelptheplanet See more

12.01.2022 Thank you to @australianwildlifeconservancy for the following report on the rare Purple-crowned Fairywren ------- Fairywrens have fascinated researchers for a long time, and for good reason males tend to display striking seasonal breeding plumages, and wrens live in social groups that breed cooperatively, seemingly going against the evolutionary principle that individuals should be selfish and only care for their own progeny.... With its stunning purple head and perky blue tail, the Purple-crowned Fairywren represents an iconic species of the Kimberley. It is a riparian habitat specialist occurring only along waterways in northern Australia. The western subspecies, Malurus coronatus coronatus, is endangered because its riparian habitat, specifically Pandanus aquaticus vegetation, is suffering from habitat degradation due to feral herbivores and fire. To better understand the species and how we might help conserve it, Associate Professor Anne Peters, from Monash University, in collaboration with AWC, set up a long-term research project in 2005 to study Purple-crowned Fairywrens at AWC’s Mornington Wildlife Sanctuary. Still ongoing, the project involves close monitoring of a population along 15 kilometres of Annie Creek and Adcock River. Here, AWC’s destocking efforts and implementation of the EcoFire program have allowed the riparian vegetation to regenerate, and the fairywren population to thrive. In fact, the Purple-crowned Fairywren population at Mornington has the highest density in its range. All fairywrens in the population have been fitted with small, uniquely coloured leg bands. The researchers have followed individuals throughout their lives and know exactly where and when each local bird was born, where it moved to, which bird it mated with, how many offspring it had, and ultimately, when it died. ------- The above is written by Dr Niki Teunissen, Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Monash University, and Dr Anne Peters, Associate Professor, Monash University, in collaboration with AWC ecologists. 01.01.2022 Six steps for the future -- lets all do our little bit towards making them work.

01.01.2022 Happy fluffy butt Friday from our wonderful chook expert, Jessamy Miller! She is surviving lockdown in Melbourne by doing all those chores that are usually put off forever, like painting the fence. And her chooks got to explore the front garden and keep her company while she did it! Peaches is a Pekin bantam, which are moderate layers and do go broody but are terrific pets and mama hens as they tend to be placid and full of personality. She is gorgeous -- and it looks like sh...e knows it! ~ @sunimiller . . #chickens #chooks #lockdown #fluffybuttfriday #pekinbantam #fresheggs #freerangechickens #growyourown #yourplanet #abcaustralia #organicgardenermag #gardenshelptheplanet See more

01.01.2022 One of our regular contributors, Justin Russell, has been busy on his property. Heres the latest: For whatever reason, the previous owner of our place cut down an established pear tree but mercifully, didnt poison the stump. The tree remnants sent up a bunch of suckers and I grafted a few to a beautiful Manchurian pear I came across in a luthiers backyard. The new little trees (I need to select just one to grow on) have mocked the worst drought in living memory and are poi...sed to thrive in the wetter months ahead. In a decade or so, this paddock corner will host a tough, beautiful tree that delights whoever lives here with spring blossoms, summer shade, autumn foliage and wonderful naked branches during winter. Give trees a chance. We cant wait to revisit @jrhalfmoonfarm in a couple of years to see the result! ~ @jrhalfmoonfarm . . . . . #welovetrees #pears #peartree #plantingforthefuture #yourplanet #abcaustralia #organicgardenermag #gardenshelptheplanet
