25.01.2022 In these uncertain times, it might be worth your while to consider taking a few precautions if you are still going to church on Sundays or during choir practice, particularly around the organ console. We suggest the following: 1. Dont shake anybodys hand. If you are sharing the peace, put your hand on your heart instead, and keep a distance of at least 1.5 metres between you and anybody else, wherever possible. 2. Take some alcohol wipes with you, or hand sanitizer (65% str...ength) if you are able to obtain some from a supermarket, and use it to wipe down the organ keys, the stops, the organ bench and the music stand. Go easy using alcohol wipes on the organ console and bench. Alcohol can strip away the lacquer on wooden furniture if used too much. This is particularly important if you are not the only person to play the organ. It is not certain, but some studies have suggested that the coronavirus can remain viable in the air for up to 3 hours, on copper for up to 4 hours, on cardboard for up to 24 hours and on plastic and stainless steel up to 2 to 3 days. Household disinfectants will successfully wipe away coronavirus. 3. Wash your hands often, particularly before and after eating or using the toilet. Coronavirus is not a living organism but a protein molecule (RNA) covered by a protective layer of fat, so washing our hands, clothes and other washable items with soap or detergent in hot water above 25 degrees Celsius will melt the virus protective layer of fat, preventing absorption of the virus into our cells via mucosa. Hot water makes more foam which has greater effect. [Source: Johns Hopkins Hospital] 4. Avoid touching your face after touching other surfaces. 5. Surgical masks are only helpful in preventing people who have the coronavirus disease from spreading it to others. There is little evidence that use of surgical masks by healthy people will prevent its transmission, provided social distancing is maintained. 6. If you are involved in a choir practice, make sure everybody washes their hands before and after handling sheet music. See more
