25.01.2022 PUPPY EMOTIONS: DISGUST Cooper here showing us his, "are we done yet?" face . Puppies go through a lot of emotions when they learn new things. Curiosity, excitement, fear, aggression and so on.... . One of the most important things to remember when you're trying to introduce your puppy to something new, is to think about YOUR OWN EMOTIONS. . Your puppy will react to said new "thing" however they are going to react. You can't change that, but you can change how you will react. . I often deal with scared pups. Grooming is scary. I can't change that. The hose sprays water, the drier blows air and the clippers pulsate. What I CAN and DO change, though. Are my emotions. . The worst thing you can do for your scared pup is tell them "you're okay" and feel sorry for them. . Dogs do not feel comforted by a sorry human. . This was only Mac's second visit and I already saw such an improvement from his first visit which is amazing . 22.01.2022 HOW TO TRIM YOUR DOG'S EYES & VISOR You will need: Scissors & a comb (plus brush if you have one) . EYES... Step 1: Ensure there are no knots or "eye goop" Step 2: Using the comb, lift the hair away from the eyes on an angle. Usually, this is an inverted V shape. Step 3: On the same angle, trim the hairs that stick up, keeping the tips of the scissors pointing away from the eyes. Step 4: Repeat on the other side and you're done! *Alway hold your dogs muzzle closed to prevent them from moving. You are holding scissors near their eyes so safety first! . VISOR Step 1: Comb the hair from the back of the eye socket forward. Step 2: From the corner of the eye, trim on a slight bevel in a semi-circle around the visor (fringe). You can do this right around to the other side or one side at a time. Step 3: Comb this area and trim any bits you missed then round the edge. *You can also use thinners after you've cut to soften the edge. . 20.01.2022 PUPPY EMOTIONS: ANTICIPATION Such as, "are you going to hand me that treat?" . If youve been following along, I talk a lot about making grooming fun, not feeling sorry for your pup and introducing your puppy to things the "right way". .... Youre most likely thinking "but what does that mean?" And "how do I do this?!" . Unfortunately, theres no one way. I certainly have methods I follow but its also important to adapt to how your puppy reacts based on the emotions their showing. . Theres a huge difference between a puppy trying to jump out of the bath because theyre scared of the water (a) and a puppy trying to jump out because theyve had enough. (b) . In scenario (a), puppy is scared. We have to show them what we want but also allow them to see the water wont hurt. In scenario (b), puppy is what i would call bored. Hes probably fine with the bath but doesnt want to be there any more. Puppy needs to be taught patience. You could use treats at this point, asking for a sit and/or a stand until youre finished. . But dont forget, they are puppies and theyre attention spans arent as long as an adult dog so being bored is understandable. I would personally try and finish up the bath as quick and calmly as I can from that point so that we can end on a good note. . 18.01.2022 LARGE BREED PUPPIES Boss is almost as tall as me!... not that that's very hard to do anyway! . A motivated pup is easier to train. How would you encourage Boss to get in the bath without an incentive? Definitely, not by carrying him thats for sure!... . Thats one of the reasons why large breed puppies should see a groomer right away. Smaller dogs can be carried in a bath if need be and then eased into everything from there. But if the pup won't even get in the bath how do we start desensitising them? . Ideally, a puppy or dog that is terrified to get in the bath would be taught to first not fear the bath but this isn't always practical in cases where pup actually NEEDS to be groomed. 17.01.2022 TOO WARM WATER = DRY SKIN & COAT If you have a pup with very dry, irritated, inflamed or itchy skin I recommend using fresh water at roughly 27-29 degrees. . Using water that is too warm can actually exacerbate dry skin and increase itching leading to further inflammation. .... Warm water DOES dry out the skin & coat. If the dogs skin barrier is already compromised it is unable to deal with the extra drying it now has to deal with from water that is too warm and effectively dries out further. . 16.01.2022 HOW TO CLEAN YOUR DOGS EARS You will need: Tissues, cotton pad or cotton ball Ear Cleaner of your choice Step 1: If using a tissue, wrap the tissue around your finger and apply ear cleaner.... *Cold ear cleaner can shock some dogs, allow it to warm up on your finger prior to cleaning. Step 2: With your other hand, flip the ear over or lift it up. Pulling slightly outwards/towards you opens up the passage way for easier cleaning. Step 3: Insert tissue/finger into the dogs ear and move it around, being careful not to scratch or poke the inside of the ear. *Massaging the base of the ear at the same time tends to draw their attention away form what youre doing. Need to be brushed really well as it's quite hard for loose hair in these areas to fall out naturally. 15.01.2022 HOW TO TRIM YOUR DOG'S PAW PADS I was going to remove Charlie's wriggling but then I thought it would good to see the full video so you know what to expect at home! . You will need: Small scissors or mini trimmers... . Step 1: Lift the paw on a natural angle but so you can see underneath. Step 2: Using your fingers, gently pull the hair out from between the paw pad & push and flat laying hair up so it sticks out. Step 3: Keeping the scissors parallel to the paw pads, trim anything that sticks up so there is no hair covering the paw pads. * Do not dig into the paw pads! . 13.01.2022 HOW TO CLEAN YOUR DOG'S EARS You will need: Tissues, cotton pad or cotton ball Ear Cleaner of your choice Step 1: If using a tissue, wrap the tissue around your finger and apply ear cleaner.... *Cold ear cleaner can shock some dogs, allow it to warm up on your finger prior to cleaning. Step 2: With your other hand, flip the ear over or lift it up. Pulling slightly outwards/towards you opens up the passage way for easier cleaning. Step 3: Insert tissue/finger into the dogs ear and move it around, being careful not to scratch or poke the inside of the ear. *Massaging the base of the ear at the same time tends to draw their attention away form what you're doing. How would you encourage Boss to get in the bath without an incentive? Definitely, not by carrying him thats for sure!... . Thats one of the reasons why large breed puppies should see a groomer right away. Smaller dogs can be carried in a bath if need be and then eased into everything from there. But if the pup wont even get in the bath how do we start desensitising them? . 03.01.2022 PUPPY EMOTIONS: ANTICIPATION Such as, "are you going to hand me that treat?" . If you've been following along, I talk a lot about making grooming fun, not feeling sorry for your pup and introducing your puppy to things the "right way". .... You're most likely thinking "but what does that mean?" And "how do I do this?!" . Unfortunately, there's no one way. I certainly have methods I follow but its also important to adapt to how your puppy reacts based on the emotions their showing. . There's a huge difference between a puppy trying to jump out of the bath because they're scared of the water (a) and a puppy trying to jump out because they've had enough. (b) . In scenario (a), puppy is scared. We have to show them what we want but also allow them to see the water won't hurt. In scenario (b), puppy is what i would call bored. He's probably fine with the bath but doesn't want to be there any more. Puppy needs to be taught patience. You could use treats at this point, asking for a sit and/or a stand until you're finished. . But don't forget, they are puppies and they're attention spans aren't as long as an adult dog so being bored is understandable. I would personally try and finish up the bath as quick and calmly as I can from that point so that we can end on a good note. .
