22.01.2022 Our final event for the year will be on 24th October at 10am with a recital followed by our AGM. The recital will be held on the historic Clifton organ at St John’s Church in Fremantle; more details to follow. This instrument, completed in April 1884, was the third to be built by Western Australian builder, Robert Cecil Clifton and was considered equal toany organ yet imported to this colony. It was also the second organ that Clifton built for this church. His Opus 1 was... sold to St Matthew’s Church, Guildford for 250. The organ was formally opened on 15th May 1884 with a choral service. The organist was Mr. S.P.B. Needhim and he was assisted by Captain Wilkinson, the organist of St. George’s Cathedral. The combined choirs of St George’s Cathedral and St John’s church sang for the service and the anthem was taken from Mendelssohn’s Hymn of Praise . The organ cost 600 and 23 12s. 6d was donated during the opening service. The case was made of cedar and oregon pine with mouldings in jarrah, while the carvings and fretwork were in kauri pine. There were 847 pipes in total, of which Clifton made the 338 wooden pipes, while the metal pipes were supplied by Hill and Son in England. It had a mechanical action and the blower was operated by hydraulic machine. The organ was the largest in the colony at the time. The original specification is as follows: Two manuals C C to G 56 notes Pedals C C C to E 29 notes Great Organ: 1. Lieblich Gedacht wood 16 feet tone 56 pipes 2. 17.01.2022 Dear OSWA members and friends. Sadly we have received news that Lynn Kirkham passed away Easter Sunday morning. Lynn was a member of the Organ Society of Western Australia for many years and played an important role in the Societys early years being the Secretary (1974-75) and Editor of Organ News (1974-76). He studied engineering at UWA and this further piqued his interest in not only the music but also the mechanics of organ design.... He was invited by Ron Sharp to assist in setting up the Perth Concert Hall organ during the 1970s, and carried out most of the finishing and setting up of the playing action. This lead to Lynn utilising his engineering prowess in developing a new innovative action and winding system that would be used for future projects. His first instrument was a French classical organ in a private home, which was built on a part-time basis over a number of years. Lynn was also responsible for designing new winding and playing actions for various organs, including in the Guildford Grammar School Chapel, and the Verbrugghen Hall at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Lynns greatest musical achievement would have to be the sublime organ in the Chapel of Trinity College East Perth. It is Perths shining light and an absolute delight to play. It has been much praised by all those who have been fortunate enough to play this instrument. It is a magnificent legacy of a wonderful man. The Organ Society extends its heartfelt sympathies to his wife, family and friends throughout the world.

11.01.2022 In this post we are highlighting the history of the Dodd organ at St Matthews Anglican Church in Guildford. This instrument replaced the original Clifton organ which was deemed past service by Mr Clifton, after 35 years of use. An organ committee was set up to oversee the purchasing of the new organ by Adelaide organ builder, J.E. Dodd. A church meeting was held in June 1901 and the parishioners unanimously agreed with the decision to proceed. Three gentlemen guaranteed 1...00 guineas towards the cost provided that the parishioners could raise a similar amount by September. One generous donor sent a cheque for 50 towards this. The inaugural recital was given by Mr A.J. Leckie, the organist at St Georges Cathedral, and took place in July 1911 to a crowded church. The programme included Boellmanns Suite Gothique, Prelude and Fugue C Minor by J.S. Bach and Chanson de Nuit by Elgar. The organ cost 500 in total and over 17 was collected that evening, leaving 13 still owing. The air supply for the organ was originally pumped manually and old vestry records report that the organ blower was paid 10 per annum to carry out this vital task. An electric blower was installed in 1927. For more information, please visit The Organ Society of Western Australia. http://www.oswa.org.au/

10.01.2022 Like so many people around the world, one of our members has been using modern technology to bring music to others. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2IJKaORTAwI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLv3UZsoUIc https://youtu.be/16d2M2KCo14... This particular organ was built in 1963 by Western Australian organ builder, Paul Hufner. It was originally built for the Carnamah Community Church and comprised of one manual of 49 keys with one rank (extended), 5 stops and 92 pipes. The organ was moved to Perth in 1993, firstly to St Matthews Anglican Church, Armadale and then to St Ninian and St Chad Anglican Church in Maylands in 2008 before being removed and stored in 2010. The organs current owner first played this particular instrument as a teenager in Paul Hufner s workshop and was instantly hooked. He maintained an interest in its movements over the years and purchased the organ in 2011 for his residence. The organ was restored and enlarged in 2013. It now has a 2 octave pedal board and the manual has been extended to 54 notes. The instrument has 2 ranks, 16 stops with 163 pipes. 05.01.2022 Dear members and friends of OSWA, As you no doubt are aware of the implications facing our community with regard to COVID19, we have reluctantly decided to cancel the upcoming A Dalliance with Dodd at St. Thomas Catholic Church, Claremont on Saturday 21st March at 2.00pm. This decision has not been taken lightly, but we believe that it is the prudent course of action. At this stage we are planning to prepare the future events as scheduled but will advise you in due course... should further cancellations be necessary. Thank you for your understanding.
