25.01.2022 Many thanks to Stephan Wagner and SHOO for a brilliant new map of Smiths Creek in SW Sydney for MetrO League 3. A few competitors also saw a koala on their course!

23.01.2022 Today we finished a great 3-week program with Mackellar Girls Campus Year 9 PASS classes. Session 1 was a score course around the school to familiarise the girls with reading a map, Session 2 was a compass-bearing activity above Manly Dam to show how to "bush bash" with confidence, and Session 3 was a score course also above Manly Dam incorporating all they had learnt. Thrilled that some girls got all 15 controls for the finale given the intricacy of the bare rock and the fac...t some controls were off-track. The feedback from teachers and students was very high. Thanks to coaches Ian Jessup, Tshinta Hopper, Peter Hopper and Sharon Lambert for delivering some memorable lessons. Curiously, for the final session each coach walked about 3.5km - putting out controls, roaming as a coach/marshal, then collecting controls. The last pic is the coach track in the eastern part. This is the sixth year we have delivered the program to Mackellar and it looks like well be back next year! Are you looking to challenge a scout/guide group or a school class? Get in touch with us! 22.01.2022 A truly awesome summer series last Sunday on the Central Coast. Approx 350 points in the bush tracks along the ridge line, but some flat running down below for those after more. This is delicious course setting.

22.01.2022 A day late because we had to watch the Origin decider - but it was another cracker of a SSS course at Telopea on Wednesday. The Vineyard Creek track network has brought many a fast runner undone, and this time they had an excuse to avoid the deep dive into the green: Graeme Hill had set what appeared at first glance to be the loneliest pot in 30 years (number 29 on Bettington Road). This control was very close to where those poor Abdallah children were run over and killed by ...a drunk driver in February. Quite a few participants paid homage by taking the outside route and just ducking into the bush where needed. But most people fully embedded themselves in the green and discovered some lovely surprises - large flags, two tracks (into 11 and 13) streamered, and the bush section blown up at 1:4000. Very generous from Graeme, but only one runner - Uringa rookie Simon Murphy - cleared the lot under time. Brooner is nursing a foot injury and we suspect he might have scored 600 as well. Mel and Gill the best women with 550, and 82 people scoring 400+. Thanks Graeme, thanks WHO. See more

17.01.2022 The NSW Stingers are delighted to announce that former Swiss junior coach Renate Leuenberger-Widmer will be their coach for 2021. "Reni" brings incredible qualifications and experience to the role. She has a Masters Degree in Human Movement and Sport and taught science and physical education. As an orienteering coach, she guided regional teams in her native Switzerland for several years, and coached the Swiss Junior Team for 2 years, during which they won 10 gold medals at th...e 2016 & 2017 Junior World Championships. She recently relocated to Australia with her husband, David, and son Nino, and has joined Bennelong Northside Orienteers. Orienteering NSW is excited to appoint a coach of such calibre, and we're sure her expertise and enthusiasm will be of great benefit to our top level squad. 16.01.2022 If you live in the greater Sydney area, Sunday's MetrO League is on a terrific new map at Scheyville National Park near Windsor. If you're newish to the bush, here's why this is a great event: * it's flat terrain * it's mostly open country * it's ideal for learning to use a compass You'll need to pre-enter by 6pm Saturday, whether you are running in a team or just casually.

16.01.2022 Now is a great time to trade in your old SI stick and upgrade to a contactless SI Air model. These recycled SI Air sticks are just $65 - and hold up to 128 controls! No touching required - very appropriate for covid times - simply hold or gently wave it over the control and the stick beeps and flashed to record your "punch". Also ideal for MTBO where you can ride past without stopping. Colin has plenty in stock via Aussie O Gear.

15.01.2022 Some photos from Wednesday's 30th anniversary Sydney Summer Series event at Waverton/Balls Head - where it all began in November 1990. A superb course by Warwick Selby, ably assisted by Moses himself (Ross Barr). ONSW chipped in with complimentary mini cupcakes for everyone. Just a beautiful celebration of a great recreational activity that has introduced thousands of people to the sport of orienteering. We'd also like to acknowledge North Sydney Council for permission to revisit this special area of Sydney foreshore and Sydney history. Here's to another 30 years.

15.01.2022 The popular SOS starts up again this Saturday

13.01.2022 AUST MTBO Champs postponed to 2021, but there will still be events on the weekend of September 19-20.

13.01.2022 While were on the topic of legends of our sport, it has come to our attention that WaggaRoos Orienteers president John Oliver has notched up 50 years in the sport. John represented Australia at the world champs in 1974-76-78 and - while he has done just about everything in orienteering - is still chasing an elusive national individual title. See the web story for full details: www.onsw.asn.au/1519-half-century-for-john-oliver Great stuff John!

12.01.2022 Wet weather doesn't put off mountain bikers - there are some classic photos in here from BOSS 1 in Newcastle on Sunday.

12.01.2022 It was wet and wild at Manly Dam today as MetrO League resumed following the covid lockdown. Thanks to BN for hosting, Manly Vale PS for the wonderful assembly location, and to all participants for observing covid protocols. Results are on Eventor and the ML web page, while the ML tables will be finalised by Monday.

12.01.2022 Hamish Mackie (Big Foot) and Newcastle pair Robert Lewin and Carolyn Matthews won all three events to dominate the ACT MTBO championships held in very warm weather over the weekend. Hamish won a star-studded M40 field, riding down an age class, while Robert won M70 and Carolyn had three close tussles with fellow Australian rep Tamsin Barnes from Queensland in W50. Garingal's Istvan Kertesz took out the non-championship Open 3 class at each event as well. NSW riders made up ha...lf the field, which would have been larger still had the Victorian borders opened a week earlier. We should also mention the extra effort put in by Ori Gudes (UR) who rode 60km in his three races, another 10km shadowing his 8-year-old son Alon, then backed up to run 6km and win the Medium Line course at the River and Bay Series back in Sydney on Sunday afternoon! Thanks to Orienteering ACT for a great weekend. Loads of photos on their FB page. Our last MTBO event for 2020 is Newcastle's BOSS 3 at Neath on Sunday December 13. See more

11.01.2022 Orienteering NSW will hold a Level 0 Coaching workshop at Sydney Olympic Park this Sunday (Aug 30). 11.01.2022 Were holding off on this weeks member and casual e-bulletins for an update to our covid policy. Stay tuned!

11.01.2022 NEWS FLASH: all this weekend's events have been cancelled or postponed, due to the NSW government now recommending against travel between zones/regions for community sport. We are naturally disappointed that sport has been singled out for these further restrictions, and ask everyone to please follow all covid protocols no matter where they are or what they are doing. Please check Eventor to see how and when events will be conducted over the next six weeks.

11.01.2022 Big Foot siblings Ewan and Nea Shingler won the 12km race and Alastair George was third in the 20km event at the Bare Creek Trail Run at the weekend. The Shinglers won by more than six minutes, while Alastair was only 33 seconds behind the champion. And dad Mark was second in the M50+ age class for the 12km run. Other top 10 finishes among orienteers we found were: 20km... Glenn Horrocks (Garingal): 8th overall and second in M40-49 12km Caitlin Young (ACT): 2nd woman overall and 2nd in W18-39 Zoe Melling (Uringa): 6th woman overall and 1st in W50+ Rebecca George (BF): 6th in W18-39 Aniko Fozo-Kertesz (GO): 10th in W18-39 Jo Parr (BF): 6th in W50+ Congratulations to all these athletes on their achievements. 11.01.2022 Terrys Creek is a gem of bushland running through Eastwood/Marsfield, near Macquarie Uni. Glenn Horrocks had eight controls along its 1.2km length today, so everyone would have spent some time in there. And rule no.1 when planning SSS routes: allow extra time when on bush tracks! #5 was beneath the waterfall that's even marked on Google Maps, and #30 needed a slight diversion up a slope. It was pushing 28C in the sun, so the green stuff provided a lovely respite. One local ou...t for a walk remarked: "It's busy in here today!" It certainly was, with another 210+ in attendance. 540 was the best score, by the evergreen Richard Morris. And Nea Shingler made it two in a row as leading female with a superb 500 neat. A great afternoon. Thanks Glenn, thanks Garingal, thanks Bennelong for use of the map. Raw results here: http://sportident.itsdamp.com/results/sss5.php See more

10.01.2022 The Jones family were heavily involved in Uringa Orienteering Club and Orienteering NSW for more than a decade before moving back to the UK. In this podcast, middle child Georgia talks about how she founded a club at Exeter Uni. Her section starts at 20:30. Very interesting bit about legacy and succession planning in the 40+ minutes shes on air.

08.01.2022 ONSW has a vacancy for a Member Protection Information Officer (MPIO). An MPIO is responsible for providing confidential information about a persons rights, responsibilities and options to an individual making a complaint or raising a concern. MPIOs are generally impartial but do not mediate or investigate complaints. Prospective MPIOs undertake training leading to certification. If you are interested in this important volunteer role, or have questions about the position, please email Mary Jane Mahony ([email protected]).

07.01.2022 Who's the boss of mountain bike orienteering? Our Newcastle club. Event 2 in the BOSS series for 2020-21 resulted in 93 competitors at Hawkemount, boosted by teams and family entries. A tough, hilly course with scoring lower than usual, BOSS 3 is on Sun Dec 13 at Neath. And a reminder that this weekend we have the ACT MTBO Champs - entries close on Thursday.

07.01.2022 MetrO League 4 is on Sunday, but its pre-entry only - whether you are running in a team or solo.

06.01.2022 Davidson HS Year 9 Outdoor Ed students certainly had an adventure at Manly Dam on Tuesday. Some interesting route choices linking the eastern and western loops. A great day out.

05.01.2022 We'd be lost without maps...

05.01.2022 Introducing our youngest ever Sydney MetrO League competitor. Just 8 years old, Justine completed the 2.5km Division 6 Moderate course for her Western & Hills Orienteers club at Scheyville National Park on her own today! Wow. She has been doing the MINI courses at the Sydney Summer Series Orienteering for several years with mum in tow, but this was a big step up. We are in awe. (The map here is from Division 4 which was also Moderate).

05.01.2022 Here's an orienteering event so exciting you'll wet yourself - literally! Our partner organisation Bold Horizons is staging a special event at Raging Waters Sydney (formerly known as Wet n Wild) early on Saturday December 12. The start window will be 7.30-8.30am, with course closure at 9.20am. Due to the unique nature of this event and very special location, entry is dearer than the weekly SOS events. Most courses have a $30 entry fee however shorter courses likely to be popu...lar with children have a discounted entry fee. After the completion of courses, all guests will be required to exit Raging Waters Sydney. Discounted tickets will be available to re-enter the park on opening at 10am and guests are invited to slide the rest of the day away. 04.01.2022 Oceania 2021 in NZ has been postponed.

04.01.2022 Some handy new guides to our sport...

04.01.2022 Heres the unstoppable Basil Baldwin from Goldseekers Orienteers in the local Orange paper. Legend.

03.01.2022 One format of our sport is mountain bike orienteering (MTBO). All the controls are on trails and you ride around the course instead of running. This Sunday morning our Newcastle club has the first of their monthly BOSS events, at Killingworth South. This fun series last year produced an Australian MTBO representative in Tim Doman, as well as attracting lots of new families! Starts from 9-10.15am, coaching included in the entry fee. https://eventor.orienteering.asn.au/Events/Show/10490 And over the October long weekend in Sydney you can double your fun with DUO events (Sat Oct 3 at Appin, Mon Oct 5 at Frenchs Forest). Run a course or ride a course - or do both!

02.01.2022 Congratulations to Briohny Seaman from WaggaRoos Orienteers who has filled the final position on the ONSW Board. Briohny is one of our elite NSW Stingers. Her appointment means we now have four women and eight clubs on the nine-person board. Briohny's first board meeting is on November 24.

02.01.2022 Gun orienteers on the TV again.

01.01.2022 You can see how much fun our Port Macquarie club had at their line course event at Town Beach today. The dominant demographic is young families and the kids just love it! Great stuff HOGs!
