25.01.2022 COVID-19... Social distancing... And from next week, some kids don't have the choice to go to school now... In this tough time, Origami Cairns cannot offer our class or doesn't have any events to be part of, so instead we'll introduce you to some of the web services that you can find some origami instructions and enjoy making various shapes from the paper at home. You don't have origami paper at home?? Then go to this online shop that specialises in selling origami paper! Yo...u don't need to risk going out to physical shops because they'll deliver it to you. http://origami.com.au If you've got some square paper, then you can start at any time! There are many origami instructions online, but here is the one I recommend most of the time: Origami Club! https://en.origami-club.com/ Just simply go to any category and choose what you would like to fold based on your folding level. This is just a general starter. We'll keep posting with some more recommended folding models and instructions :)

24.01.2022 We had a really fun Halloween origami class with lovely four girls this afternoon. We made several Halloween items such as the ghost with a witch’s hat, bats, Jack-o-lantern , and the devil’s claws . Some of the girls are going to Trick Or Treating in costumes. Have a great spooky night!

22.01.2022 We had the bush fire charity origami workshop at the Japanese sweets shop Hayabusa in Kuranda Original Market today. As one of the themes for today's origami was kimono, I wore one to match the atmosphere. Well, what everyone actually chose to make was the other theme, spinning top, which was quite enjoyable to make and play with, especially for the boys. After we made the spinning tops, we had the special treat from Ben; a mango dorayaki cake!! Thankfully, we raised $70 from this workshop and it has all been donated to Nature Foundation South Australia to support them re-establish the lost wildlife habitat especially in Kangaroo Island. Thank you so much for everyone who came along today, and to Ben and Miwako who kindly offered the place and suggested for the donation act :)

22.01.2022 Today’s origami class was merry and lively with many girls’ constant laughters They all had a good challenge on something that require a bit of concentration. Look at the beautiful creations that they all made! Well done everyone, and a big thank you to Ken sensei for keeping the venue always clean.

20.01.2022 Easy way to remember the steps for the paper crane Are you children board at home already?? What about training their fine motor skills with origami?? I'm not really a video-making person, but since I cannot hold physical origami classes in this near-lockdown situation, I've gone a bit beyond my comfort zone to make a video to share how I teach the folding steps for the most well-known origami model: the paper crane! Parents and teachers, please feel free to use this video... to familiarise yourself to the language I'm using and teach your children / students how to fold the paper crane without having to repeating yourself over and over! Usually, with this instruction, only two repetition is enough for most children to learn the steps and start folding on their own, with little mistake. You don't have any proper origami paper at home? You can buy some from the online origami store in Australia! http://www.origami.com.au/ Happy folding

14.01.2022 Japan Day of Hope The annual tsunami memorial charity event is happening again on the following schedule: Date: Saturday the 7th of March (It’s this Saturday!!) Time: 11:00am-4:00pm Venue: Edge Hill State School Performing Art Centre. ... This is probably the biggest Japanese event in Cairns in which the Japanese community get together to offer various services, goods and performances in one day. The purpose of this event is to commemorate the 2011’s earthquake disaster in Japan, and to raise fund for the children in Fukushima, the area that was most affected by the nuclear meltdown following the 2011 tsunami. The profit from the event will be used to invite some selected children from Fukushima prefecture to Cairns for their refreshment and educational camp program. Again this year, Origami Cairns will hold a stall where you can drop in and learn origami with gold coin donations. I will also sell the accessories that I made with origami and UV resin. There will also be various stage performances, Japanese food and goods, massages etc to enjoy throughout the day. Please drop in with your family and friends, and help us support Smile With Kids’ amazing project. 910 Smile With Kids Information: https://www.facebook.com/events/438635743688512/

08.01.2022 As part of FNQ Japan Week YouTube series which started from the 1st of November (Culture Day in Japan), I made this video to showcase the beauty of origami as one of the traditional culture of Japan. In the video I am demonstrating some of the unit origami artworks such as Sonobe balls, cherry blossom and pinapple, which are a lot more complex than the single-piece models that I usually teach to the children. I hope you'll enjoy watching it, and you are more than welcome to share it with others. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIBVo6LWasU

08.01.2022 We have had an origami workshop today after a while of blank period due to the pandemic restrictions. Thanks to Ken sensei who recently started to operate his own classroom in his house, we’ve had a good number of people to learn the origami techniques together. We made some toys that you can move and play with, such as sumo wrestlers, flapping cranes, spinning tops, and tricky boats. It was so enjoyable to see everyone’s face when they were having fun with the toys they’ve made! Thanks everyone for coming :)
