16.01.2022 COVID19 - Hierarchy of Controls This graphic arrived in my inbox, It's worth sharing The last point in the Engineering column is so very important. Often air handling systems are the most neglected. Out of sight - Out of mind. Bringing fresh air into a large ducted system is not easy. #HVAC systems are designed to bring in only 20% fresh air this means 80% is re-circulated. Yes you are breathing the exhaled air of the person that you don't like down the hall. ... If a building has wall hung split systems or ceiling cassettes, then introduction of fresh air can only be through opening a window. #Sanitising and cleaning air handling systems is often very low on the list of priorities of building managers and owners. They are out of sight ! Just look up at the air conditioning supply registers (air blowing into the room), see if there are black streaks of dust on the ceiling. If the answer is yes - the system is filthy inside and is a vector for spreading many harmful #pathogens throughout your building. End to end #sanitizing of your #airconditioning system is easier than you might think. No matter where you are ask me how.... 11.01.2022 Does Coronavirus spread through air conditioning? Simply the answer is Yes ! We know that Coronavirus and other harmful bacteria, yeasts and moulds can remain suspended in the air, in ultra-fine droplets for 3 or more hours. ... This can be seen in the case of diners at a Chinese restaurant. The 3 families sitting within the blue cloud of aerosols (Image: medRxiv) contracted the virus. While other diners and staff were not infected. The infection was transmitted by a recirculating air conditioner (often called a split system) high on the wall. This type of air conditioner needs cleaning and sanitising annually. This is a simple job that most people can do themselves. Also the unit should remain sanitised at all times to inhibit the re-growth of harmful pathogens to ensure the best quality air in your building. The droplets are much smaller than any filter in a recirculating air conditioner can trap. Not only can the droplets carry SARS-COV-2 but can also include bacteria, yeasts and moulds such as Golden Staph, Legionella, E-Coli, Aspergillus, Bacillus, Pseudomonas, Candida, and more. These micro-organisms can cause a variety of respiratory and skin infections as well as food poisoning. These are contaminants regularly found multiplying in all types of air conditioning systems. See the full story at www.originalsafetair.com.au/blog We can arrange to discuss with you on how you can sanitise your own air conditioner. 06.01.2022 Rosslyn Nursing Home Closed Issues include fuzzy dust and mould. The CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Commission) report today that the Rosslyn Nursing Home, Hamilton, Canada, has been closed on several counts. In mid May they had an outbreak of COVID-19 causing 10 deaths that forced the removal of all patients. Subsequent inspection found glaring problems of black mould and mouse droppings in the kitchen area. The black mould was found in the coolrooms, a ‘"fuzzy dust" coating... the ceiling of the home's walk-in cooler, along with black mould that was seen on the walls, electrical wires, metal temperature sensor’ says the CBC. This ‘fuzzy dust’ also covered the kitchen’s range hood, which was also greasy and a fire hazard. 02.01.2022 On June 5th 2020, the World Health Organisation (WHO) issued a paper on Face masks. In it was this warning...... "Potential harms/disadvantages self-contamination that can occur if non-medical masks are not changed when wet or soiled. This can create favourable conditions for microorganisms to amplify" I'm fairly sure that 99% of mask wearers are not using, or looking after their masks properly.... Other WHO recommendations include:- Do not touch the mask once it is on. Only remove the mask by ear loops or headband. Wash reusable masks daily, dry and store correctly. Let's go through the commonly available masks..... Medical examination masks (the thin blue ones). These should only be worn for an hour or two. These are not very effective as they are a loose fit, allowing air to bypass the mask. If you can feel the air on your cheeks as you breathe in or out, it is not being filtered. Virtually useless! They were designed to prevent the wearer coughing onto another person during a medical examination or procedure. P2 /N95 masks - the typical tradies dust mask. These are a tight fit around the face, this is good. The N95/P2 is an indication that the mask filters down to 2 microns. This will trap some harmful bacteria and moulds (microorganisms). However, the COVID-19 virus can be smaller than 1 micron. Some P2/N95 masks have a valve to allow expelled air to escape easily. This is good for the wearer, but not good for those around as it releases unfiltered microdroplets in the air. P2/N95 masks should also be disposed of after a couple of hours of use. Reusable fabric masks. These come in a variety of styles and levels of filtration. Some have replaceable filters (change daily or when moist), some have more layers, some are truly not so great. Owners of reusable fabric masks should have 3 masks. Recent research showed that COVID-19 can live on fabric for 72 hours. Therefore they should be washed and dried daily, and / or stored in a fresh paper bag for 2 days before being re-used. How many people actually follow these recommendations? Almost nobody is my guess. Medical and P95 masks are probably used for several days on end. Reusable masks, maybe weeks or months. All without the appropriate care. We have developed a Face Mask Sanitiser, from our range of natural Australian made sanitisation products for the air conditioning and food service industries. Unlike regular sanitisers it is alcohol free. Our formulation includes natural Australian Tea Tree Oil. It is totally non-toxic, hypoallergenic, and preservative & perfume free. It is currently available only online from https://www.originalsafetair.com.au/face-mask-sanitiser We know it kills about 99% of harmful bacteria and mould, but so far it has not been tested against the COVID-19 virus. UNSW is about to do this research for us.
