08.01.2022 Dear Parents and Carers, As you may be aware, there are ongoing cases of gastrointestinal illness among students in a number of facilities, including schools within the South East Queensland (SEQ) Region. Many school aged children have younger siblings in childcare settings and as gastroenteritis is so easily transmitted within families/household contacts we would like to take this opportunity to raise awareness regarding gastroenteritis outbreaks, their management and avail...able resources. Gastroenteritis can be caused by a variety of bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites. Gastroenteritis caused by viruses (such as norovirus) are particularly infectious and outbreaks can cause major disruptions to staff, families and schools. Gastroenteritis can be spread through person-to-person contact (for example, shaking hands), through the air when a person vomits and via contact with contaminated items and surfaces. The following control and prevention measures should be implemented following any case of gastroenteritis: * Any student or staff member who is unwell should be isolated or excluded from school until they have recovered and been completely free of symptoms for 48 hours. This will help reduce the spread of infection to others. The Public Health Act (2005) mandates that parents must not send a child to school if they have a contagious condition. See Queensland Health, (2020), Time Out: keeping your child and other kids healthy!, found at https://www.health.qld.gov.au//0/426820/timeout_poster.pdf * Students and staff should continue to practise regular hand washing with liquid soap and running water for at least 15 20 seconds, particularly after using the toilet and immediately before preparing or eating food or drinking.
