25.01.2022 In our last Gecko, we interviewed Anna Stegmann (Germany), who we last saw at our annual recorder workshop in January 2020. We wanted to check in and see how she's feeling during this upheaval in the arts. Below is our interview with her. Firstly, how have you been? "It’s been a challenging and frightening time, but this will be true for most of us. I’m in a phase of my career where I want to move forward, develop, explore, and challenge myself. Well, the challenging part wo...Continue reading

25.01.2022 The effects of 2020 in the creative response from composers were seen in many of the scores received for the competition. Below we share Chris Adams' words about his composition and how it was affected by the year. Chris was one of the four honourable mentions for our Composition Competition. "Written for SATB recorder quartet, Fugue and Dance: MMXX, is a personal response to 2020. An attempt to frame and order the trauma, disjointed and peculiar situation we currently find o...urselves in. Fugue has a double meaning; both as the musical form, but also as a pyschological state in which the patient affected seems to be able to perform acts with full awareness but upon recovery has no memory of what they have done. The dance has interspliced and juxtaposed sections, with cross-rhythmic interplay between the different instruments." #orpheusmusic #descant #descantrecorder #soprano #sopranorecorder #treble #alto #treblerecorder #altorecorder #tenor #tenorrecorder #bass #bassrecorder #bassrecorderplayer #newmusic #orpheusmusic #recorderensemble #recorderplayer #recordersociety #recordertime #composition #recorder #composerslife #composers #teamrecorder #composingmusic #composing #contemporarymusic

24.01.2022 Thinking about buying a Kung recorder but not sure where to start? Kung recorders have three series: Studio - great choice for beginners and for ensemble playing. Superio - from your sopranino all the way to your great bass recorders, this series are a good choice for solo players. The sound is rich in overtones and clear as in original baroque recorders. They are dynamic and most appropriate for musical forming.... Marsyas - this series are characterised by a colourful sound (even with gentle blowing pressure) and the effortless response of the high register. Their sound is very elegant and fine, singing and sweet - a flauto dolce in the truest sense of the word. Ideal for those looking for a refined sound. FRANZ KUNG was one of the early pioneers of 20th Century Recorder making. He founded his workshop in the family villa at Schaffhausen, Switzerland in 1938, and by the early 1950s he was winning international awards for his work. He continued making until his death in 1977, and has been succeeded by several generations of Kung family members. The current model line-up began to appear in the 1970s and 80s, and has been refined in the subsequent decades into some of the most finely finished and prestigious recorders available. 24.01.2022 One of our most popular recorder quartet publications: Spiders! "These three pieces are musical depictions of three short poems by Lance Eccles on the subject of a trio of Australian spiders - the Redback, Orb Weaver and Funnelweb. We hear the Redback catching and eating her prey to a hypnotic compound time ground bass and the Orb Weaver wrapping her catch in silk by an oscillating rhythmic pattern shared between the parts. Meanwhile the Funnelweb dashes out on the town lo...oking for love to a flurry of running quavers. All four parts get an equal slice of the action in these three attractive pieces which are ideal for an intermediate level ensemble." 23.01.2022 Are you looking for solo recorder music to bring you solace? Dawn and Dusk series was the first original Orpheus Music publications. Still some of our best selling publications, this series "uses deceptively simple materials and manipulates them into creations of variety, depth and beauty. There are hints of folk, ethnic and early music, but its transcends its roots to create a new sound world that speaks from the soul." 22.01.2022 Looking for some beautiful and interesting music for recorder and piano? "Donald Bousted's collection New Horizon subtitled "five easy pieces for alto recorder and piano or harpsichord"- for a composer best-known for his microtonal writing, these might well be considered easy pieces, but in the course of this collection performers will encounter passages of two against three against four between the two hands of the piano and the recorder, as well as some very precise dynami...c balances between the recorder and piano. All of these challenges are well worth conquering, however, since Bousted's ear for colour and texture is very acute and is put to good use here." 21.01.2022 <> LANCE ECCLES: "When I write a piece I need to be thinking of something concrete. That’s why the titles I use are so often of animals or natural phenomena. Even though the title means something to me, since it allows me to get ideas, I can appreciate the fact that the player or listener may not always see the connection. But the main aim is to produce a piece of music that people may like to play or listen to." 21.01.2022 For our Orpheus Music Composition Competition we had tied Third place. Today we look at Fiona Loader's (NSW) composition and what she had to say about it. "Rose Garden Suite is a peaceful recollection of time spent on holidays in a tranquil location admiring beautiful rose gardens and relaxing in nature. The main energetic activities of the day are expressed in the first and third movements:... First movement Brisk walk at dawn Third movement Stroll through a rose garden I have always been an early riser even on holidays. There are two things that really appeal to me about this seeing the early morning sunrise and hearing the birds chirping. The first movement recalls a time that I went walking on the beach every morning and heard the gentle lapping of the waves, the early chorus of birds and saw the light breaking over the horizon it was magical. The second movement represents a well-earned siesta under a palm tree on a hot summer day. The third movement is more a leisurely stroll through a beautiful, fragrant rose garden. The perfume of the flowers is intoxicating. The style of this suite has been described as ‘neo-Baroque’ in other words, Baroque elements with an unexpected twist, hopefully well suited to the instruments for which it is written." #orpheusmusic #descant #descantrecorder #soprano #sopranorecorder #treble #alto #treblerecorder #altorecorder #tenor #tenorrecorder #bass #bassrecorder #bassrecorderplayer #newmusic #orpheusmusic #recorderensemble #recorderplayer #recordersociety #recordertime #composition #recorder #composerslife #composers #teamrecorder #composingmusic #composing #contemporarymusic

21.01.2022 Katia Geha was our youngest prize winner in our Composition Competition, and won an honourable mention for her composition "Imploding Mango". She describes her composition as: "Written for four recorders (Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass). I wrote this work based off the principles of an ever changing and evolving piece revolving around a singular two bar motif. There was no sole composition that heavily inspired the work, but more a vivid image of an imploding mango, and what i...t would actually look like. The first and second sections, I imagined to be appreciating the sweetness and richness of the natural world: in this case, the mango, as well as the mystery around this particular fruit. I aim to achieve this through the flutter tonguing, as well as the main motif in its truest form, being a sweet and melifluous melody, yet coupled with slight dissonances. As the piece develops, I wanted to explore techniques such as polyrhythms and hemiolas, as I imagined for the mango to implode in this instance, and to visualise an entire room covered in mango. This work would not have been possible without the continual guidance of Paul Stanhope and Liza Lim: for these two incredible musicians, I am eternally grateful. Additionally, I'd like to thank my friends Isabella Pinter and Elliot Wong who provided endless support: and for these two musicians I extend my gratitude." #orpheusmusic #descant #descantrecorder #soprano #sopranorecorder #treble #alto #treblerecorder #altorecorder #tenor #tenorrecorder #bass #bassrecorder #bassrecorderplayer #newmusic #orpheusmusic #recorderensemble #recorderplayer #recordersociety #recordertime #composition #recorder #composerslife #composers #teamrecorder #composingmusic #composing #contemporarymusic

18.01.2022 In this week's Gecko newsletter we shared an interview with composer Clive Lane. Below are a few highlights from the interview: What do you do when you hit a metaphorical musical roadblock? How do you get past it? "If I get stuck in a piece I generally put it aside for a while. This may sound a little crazy, but sometimes the musical solution comes to me in my sleep and I wake up with the answer."... What do you love the most about the recorder community? "They are amateurs in the best sense of the word: lovers of music." How has Covid-19 affected your compositional output and creativity? "At first I was afflicted by a lack of energy and purpose, but now I think I have adjusted to the new normal and have set up a new routine. I’m now working on new compositions." 11.01.2022 Finding large ensemble music for recorders is always exciting. One of our most popular ensemble pieces for recorder orchestra is "Clutch of Fipples". The recorder Magazine reviewed this composition as "A rhythmically challenging piece for recorder ensemble (2D, 3A, 2T, B) but not insurmountable for confident players with good counting, especially at the suggested speed of crotchet=56.This piece does require attention to detail - especially in articulation, which is carefully ...marked. From staccati and slurs to accents and some flutter tonguing, all parts are equally challenged and, combined with the tricky rhythms, great concentrations will be required." 10.01.2022 We were so excited last year to finally be able to stock Yamaha Recorders. Because of their meticulous attention to detail throughout the production process, Yamaha recorders are recognized worldwide for their high quality, and loved by the best musicians in the world. In 1936 the Berlin Olympics were held, with recorder performances included in the celebrations, and at that time a Japanese national was in the audience. That was a man named Yoshitaka Sakamoto, who was studyin...g abroad in Germany at the time. Seeing a performance by a large crowd of children playing recorders made a deep impression on him, and recognizing the educational value of the instrument he took soprano, alto and tenor models back to Japan with him when he returned. It was at that time that the recorder came to Japan. Sakamoto tried to produce these models of recorder in Japan, and petitioned Nihon Kangakki Kabushikigaisha (later Yamaha Corporation), where their manufacture began. 07.01.2022 Looking for a recorder composition to entertain both the performers and audience? "This antipodean answer to the Carnival of the Animals contains musical descriptions of a huge variety of animals from maggots to finches, via wombats, salamanders, kangaroos and many more. Each animal portrait depicts the various creatures by melodic, harmonic and rhythmic means. This imaginative collection would be ideal for an intermediate level ensemble and would probably be particularly ...popular with school groups." 06.01.2022 Kym Dillon's (VIC) tied in Third place from our Orpheus Music Composition Competition. Here's what he had to say about it: "The title began as a reference to something quite specific; but soon after I began to work on the piece the working title's ambiguity brought alive the musical material in an unexpectedly exciting way. As such, I wish to leave the interpretation of the work up to the individual listener. In practical terms, however, I would describe it as a spirited stud...y in gesture." #orpheusmusic #descant #descantrecorder #soprano #sopranorecorder #treble #alto #treblerecorder #altorecorder #tenor #tenorrecorder #bass #bassrecorder #bassrecorderplayer #newmusic #orpheusmusic #recorderensemble #recorderplayer #recordersociety #recordertime #composition #recorder #composerslife #composers #teamrecorder #composingmusic #composing #contemporarymusic
