20.01.2022 SUPPORTING INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS TO SUPPORT AUSTRALIAN JOBS The Morrison Government is making a number of changes to student visa arrangements to ensure Australia remains a priority destination for international students as we emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic. These five visa changes will ensure international students are not worse off due to the coronavirus pandemic and that Australia remains competitive with other countries. ... The changes include: The Government will recommence granting student visas in all locations lodgedoutside Australia. This means when borders re-open, students will already have visas and be able to make arrangements to travel. International students will be able to lodge a further student visa application free of charge, if they are unable to complete their studies within their original visa validity due to COVID-19. Current student visa holders studying online outside Australia due to COVID-19 will be able to use that study to count towards the Australian study requirement for a post-study work visa. Graduates who held a student visa will be eligible to apply for a post-study work visa outside Australia if they are unable to return due to COVID-19. Additional time will be given for applicants to provide English language results where COVID-19 has disrupted access to these services. The Government has previously relaxed work restrictions for international students working in the health, aged and disability care sectors during the COVID-19 pandemic. It has also been flexible in cases where the COVID-19 pandemic has prevented international students meeting their visa conditions, such as not being able attend classes in person. ------------------ Have a question? 11.01.2022 QUEENSLAND: RETURNING FROM OVERSEAS TRAVEL QUARANTINE ARRANGEMENTS People arriving in Queensland from overseas will be charged fees for quarantining in government arranged accommodation from 1 July 2020. Why are you only charging now?... On 29 May 2020, National Cabinet gave the go-ahead for states and territories to start charging international arrivals for quarantining costs. The quarantine direction has been in place for over two and a half months and its well-publicised. Why are you charging at all? The fees are proposed to reduce the financial burden of COVID-19 prevention measures on taxpayers. To date, the Queensland Government has spent more than $19 million accommodating international arrivals. We project that figure to surpass $24 million by 30 June. This was a critical measure to prevent COVID-19 but it also has been a costly measure to the public. 09.01.2022 WHATS HAPPENING WITH GCSE AND A-LEVEL EXAMS IN 2021? When will the 2021 GCSE and A-level exams be held? GCSE and A-level exams are usually held between mid-May and mid-June but in 2021, they might happen later than usual to give students a bit more teaching time.... For now, no decision has been made about this yet Ofqual has just said that it will be doing further analysis with the exam boards and the DfE before it confirms the 2021 timetable. If the exams are delayed, would that have an impact on 2021/22 university admissions? Some students have been wondering if a delayed exam season would mean that A-level results day 2021 would have to be later than usual, in turn possibly affecting 2021/22 university admissions. Will there be any difference in the way the 2021 exams are marked? The DfE and Ofqual have not spoken about any plans to mark exams in 2021 differently than in previous years. 02.01.2022 AUSTRALIA: OCCUPATION CEILINGS FOR THE 2020-2021 PROGRAM YEAR An 'occupation ceiling' may be applied to invitations issued under the independent, skilled regional (provisional) visas. This means there will be a limit on how many EOIs can be invited for skilled migration from an occupation group. This ensures that the skilled migration program is not dominated by a small number of occupations. Once this limit is reached, no further invitations for that particular occupati...on group will be issued for that program year. Invitations will then be allocated to intending migrants in other occupation groups even if they are lower ranking.
