23.01.2022 Did you know that our osteopath Luke is currently undertaking a PhD at RMIT University? Luke is investigating the relationship between muscle stiffness or tightness and pain symptoms, and hopes to find better ways for allied health practitioners, like osteopaths, to be able to measure stiffness and monitor patient progress. Luke started his PhD after completing a year of research investigating hip abductor strength. This gave him valuable insight into how glute strength is related to hip, back and knee conditions and how to appropriately manage these problems. In his spare time away from osteopathy and research, Luke also enjoys being a tutor. Here is a photo of him teaching science to his favourite student. #osteo #painfree #dogs #fitzroy #0394869985 #booknow

16.01.2022 It is In a time of crisis that our convictions are tested. Not when things are easy and theoretical. In this crisis we know that drawing on compassion and commu...nity is how we will all survive. Compassion and a strong sense of community justice is how minorities like women, first nations peoples, migrants, LGBTIQ+ have always survived. These have been our circumstances for many years, we know how to navigate crisis with compassion. The current crisis is asking us to draw on those values we know innately. Being on the margins of society makes us value sources that rely on fact and knowledge and truth telling. Not populist, spin, & nationalist hollow hysteria. To protect our community, the women and those on the front line, we closed the Moroccon Soup bar down weeks before the government was concerned. We were reading the World Health Organisation updates, following journals and reputable journalists and as the information was coming in and we saw how the virus was behaving we then decided to stop the link of transmission. Initially we were still doing take away orders and people would be queueing up at our door. Which meant that we were all potentially transmitters just in a different capacity. To give health workers a chance and flatten the curve we shut that down as well. These were not easy decisions. We were busy which is precisely why we closed. Our transition to take out was going well, yet ironically that was precisely what we didnt want to sustain, people queueing and being out and on the move. we wanted to make sure we were doing out bit to stop the transmission and support our community by keeping them at home and providing meals healthy nutritious meals for those on the front line. And as we saw what was unfolding around the world, the health workers putting themselves on the frontline, risking their lives, doing huge hours time poor with little community support, we thought that we could provide help to those workers here in Australia. And so we began the pay it foreward campaign our community has been great , we put the call out and they immediately responded, this however is a marathon effort, requires sustained funding to help us cover our costs. This aspect hasnt been easy. We approached banks, superfunds, the consulting firms to see if they would be willing to help out our frontline workers. To see if they would like to reinvest some of our money that so happily take and pay it forward to provide lunches or dinners to our health care workers. Not one company nor corporation has replied. We will continue of course, its just disappointing when the opportunity is there for companies to show heart and give back. Thankfully community is bigger than corporate institutions. And the community response has been extraordinary. It has reaffirmed the idea that if we build it they will come. If we provide the platform to help that people will indeed help, that they want to help and show appreciation to those on the front line. I am someone who has always looked to the positives in life , why people behave well in adversity, not much interested in why people behave badly. Im interested in drawing on the positive common threads of thought and behaviour and bringing people together in order to create socially fair initiatives. When communities are strengthened and we draw on our best attributes we become unstoppable. I want to help build community founded on a mindfulness of our tread, responsibility for our privileges, collaboration our strength. It is from this place of reset that we will sprout future leaders. We stand in a period of time where it is the time to think, to talk, to pause and reflect. A good and just society if it is to work for its people has to be built on truth telling. Truth & facts. There is no alternative facts, this simply serves to undermine Education and knowledge. Australia has never been able to reconcile the truth of our history. Our foundations are built on dispossession and racism towards First Nations, reinforced by systems of misogyny. We all have a responsibility in correcting the past wrongs no matter our causes. Until we can reconcile the very foundations of our systems will remain fragile and our values of democracy and human rights, hollow rhetoric. The other main consequence of colonialism is our lack of respect for the environment in which we live. In the past 100 years we have continued impose ourselves on to the environment by mining, it logging it, polluting it, scorching it. This isnt without consequence. The raging fires erratic weather patterns and the climate crisis results of our behaviour. With the Covid 19 pandemic, has required the entire world to stop! Our ritual ls our social cues the very rhythm of life has ceased. everything that we draw meaning from has suddenly become void of meaning The places and spaces have stopped, we are now given the opportunity to pause and reset, we are having to think about the sort of society we want. This is an opportunity for us Question how we got here? It is an opportunity to build our relationships with one another and our communities. To build our relationships with the world around us And with respect for our impact on the environment. We hope this pause and reset can create a better world, one where truth, facts, are not elitist, where evidence, and knowledge are valued human traits, where our relationship to the climate is a respectful privilege we dont take for granted. I am quietly excited about the seeds that are being laid down now. And to see how they grow over the next 6-12-24 months will be an amazing time in history. We are the change we dare to lead. - - - - - - - Thank you Hana and the Moroccan Soup Bar for helping all of the frontline workers. You can pay it forward here https://ordermate.online/moroccansoupbar/menu

12.01.2022 The morning I arrived home from a work trip the first thing I did was visit my parents. The next day I showed symptoms of what would turn out to be Coronavirus.... My mum is undergoing treatment and is immunocompromised. The anxiety I felt in the next few days would be the some of the worst I have ever felt. Im a womenswear buyer and travel a lot with work. This trip myself and some colleagues had been to the UK and the US. The travel advice at the time only had warnings about China but even still we took a lot of precautions practically bathing ourselves daily in hand sanitizer. Initially when I got back I didnt have any symptoms. I saw mum. I saw dad. Spent the day with my partner. The next day the symptoms came on, fast. Headache, stuffed up, fevers. This was early on in the whole palava. The very next day I went to my doctor who tested me for Coronavirus but suspected it was more likely the common flu so tested me for that also. Four days later I was advised by a nurse at the doctors surgery that my tests were negative and while I felt relieved I still felt extremely unwell. The achy pains were the worst, just unremitting pain similar to what I had felt when I had the shingles many years prior. The headaches were awful and kept at bay with constant paracetamol. About a week into having symptoms I completely lost my sense of smell and taste. Eventually my taste has come back but putting my nose into a rose to deeply inhale its scent I get just the faintest whiff only. The fatigue was incredible. I would sleep 12-15 hours per day. The day after I received my negative results a phone call came back that theyd in fact advised that I was negative for the common flu but that I had tested positive for Coronavirus. I spent 18 days completely in quarantine. Each day the Dept of Health and Human Services would call to check in with me. Initially I was told that I would be released from quarantine after I completed two negative swabs. But then they realised they didnt have enough tests. Much to my surprise the criteria was then changed to be three consecutive days without a fever. To be honest it was a bit of a shit-show. Colleagues that I travelled with also tested positive for the virus. Remarkably though of the 40 or so people we had had close contact with since our return not a single person tested positive for the virus. Isolation has been tough. I have always suffered from anxiety and initially there were days where I didnt even get out of bed. I have coped through speaking with my family and friends every day. My brother lives in Copenhagen and he has been great particularly getting a perspective from another side of the world. While its been tough, similar to a lot of people, I have also found this whole pandemic really great for placing life in perspective. Working in the fashion industry my hours have been temporarily reduced but it has also made me question what is most important. Why do we work so much? What do we prioritise? What do we actually need? I have found the greatest solace in painting. I have always practiced art but having the time now to prioritise this practice has meant it has now become a daily ritual and it has been incredibly rewarding. Ill continue to paint and wait for the chapter Post Corona to begin. - - - - - - Thank you Victoria Coleman, artists and fashionista, for so eloquently sharing what has been an extremely challenging time.
