24.01.2022 Let’s talk SOFT TISSUE injuries! Sporting season is well and truly back! But so are the soft tissue injuries that come along with it! One of our very own Osteopaths Dr Laura Dunnell has stated below, these injuries include: ... * muscle strains * tendinopathy’s * ligament sprains To name but a few and common at the best of times, but after a full year off from sports you may be even more susceptible to these types of injuries. Dr Laura’s @lauradunell_osteo provides general tips to help prevent soft tissue injuries: Complete a proper warm up before training sessions and games to help prepare your body for the demands of your sport. Strength training to help increase the amount of load your muscles and tendons can handle. Eating enough quality foods to support your energy demands. Getting enough quality sleep to help your body recover and repair. If you experience or think you have experienced a soft tissue injury an osteopath can help you by: Assessing the injury by performing a variety tests and if needed referring for further radiological imaging. Using manual therapy to help promote healing and give you symptomatic relief. Prescribing rehabilitative exercises to help restore mobility and strength. Giving you the appropriate advice to help you manage your injury and get you back playing the sport you love confidently and safely! 18.01.2022 WINTER is comingand with that we Osteopaths often see an increase in PAIN presentations at the clinic. There is no rhyme or reason for this noteworthy trend or the relationship between the changing weather and a change in our pain. Our very own Dr Sophie Todman describes below some facts about the cold weather we do know: The cooler weather causes a decrease in the elasticity of tendons, this can attribute to an increase in joint stiffness or increase the risk of injury wh...en performing exercise without an appropriate warm-up routine. Due to the decrease in sunshine and an increase of indoor activities, we often receive less direct sunlight, which can cause a decrease in our Vitamin D stores. This reduction may cause deficiencies or insufficiencies which can influence our energy levels, our moods, and our ability to cope with pain. Undesirable weather (rain/frost/snow) can reduce our likelihood of participating in outdoor exercise such as low impact walking, reducing our muscle tone, strength, and cardiovascular fitness. Come in to see us to discuss your pain and how to best manage it throughout these cooler months. Head to the link below to book online. https://osteo-wellness.au1.cliniko.com/bookings#service By the way did you hear we have these gorgeous wheatbags in stock, already selling fast, as they are sure to be of comfort on some of those cold Winter nights. 14.01.2022 The prescription of Osteopathic manipulative techniques! . HOW IT IS WE TREAT YOU! . Once symptoms of somatic dysfunction are established, consideration is then given to the most suitable treatment approach.... . . (Somatic dysfunction is a term used to describe the problem area. Or more specifically is the impaired or altered function of related components of the bodies (somatic) framework, i.e skeletal, muscular and fascial structures, and their related vascular, lymphatic, and neural elements. . . Somatic dysfunction is treatable using osteopathic manipulative treatment. . . ‘Many factors can influence the final selection of manipulative techniques and the frequency of treatment. The osteopath takes account of factors such as the patient's age, the acuteness or chronicity of the presenting complaint, general health, response to previous treatment and the osteopath's own training and expertise in the delivery of specific osteopathic approaches. When formulating the osteopathic manipulative prescription, the osteopath has a wide range of techniques to draw upon.’ Philip Tehan, Peter Gibbons. . . Osteopaths of Whittlesea are thorough in their assessment, diagnosis and specific in their prescription of osteopathic manipulative techniques as you present on the day. . . We look forward to helping you with your aches and pains. . . Feel free to direct message for any appointments this week. We are more than happy to help. See more

09.01.2022 It’s not about re-inventing the wheel folks, I admit we need to advance, research and apply current technology to our health systems but the basics when it comes to good health are the BASICS! . The founder of Osteopathy Andrew Taylor Still (over 100 years ago) understood and advocated the importance of : ... . 1. CLEANLINESS (wash your hands). . 2. EXERCISE (movement is medicine). . 3. FRESH AIR (breathe). . 4. NUTRITION (eat whole foods). . . This man lived in a time when the meningitis epidemic took the lives of 3 of his children and it made a huge and lasting impression on him. . Dr Still sought answers to these perplexing questions and began to develop a systematic method of treatment that would eliminate guesswork and bring health without the disastrous results of many therapies of his day. . . His view was that the body was a machine, and the osteopathic physician was the mechanic who could keep it running smoothly. At the heart of his osteopathic philosophy was his belief in the body's ability to cure itself of many pathological conditions. Hippocrates expressed a similar philosophy more than 2000 years ago when he said: Our natures are the physicians of our diseases.
