25.01.2022 GREAT NEWS The Orford Triabunna Chamber of Commerce has been awarded a financial grant following an application under the Regional Chamber of Commerce Grants scheme set up by the Minister for State Growth and his staff to help small businesses restart operations as restrictions are lifted throughout Tasmania. A special thanks to John Heck for arranging this and working with the Chamber Executive on this successful application. The application was granted based on the follo...wing proposed activities: Bulk purchase & distribution of materials, equipment and support for virus protection to permit safe association. To develop and provide "Lifted Restriction" Packs as restrictions are lifted industry by industry or business by business. The Chamber Executive is currently in the process of putting together 30+ Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) Starter Packs. These packs will include Hand Sanitisers, Pump Packs, Gloves and Tape for marking out safe social distancing. These packs will be made available for Chamber Members and Community Groups as restrictions are lifted. We thank State Growth and the State Government for their on-going endeavours to take all Tasmanian's safely through to the other side of the COVID-19.

23.01.2022 FYI from today's Mercury. Time to get out and support our local businesses Orford publican suffers double whammy with lockdown floods It’s been a case of double bad luck for Orford publican Alan Burdon, whose venue was flooded the week after COVID-19 shutdowns. And now, he can’t even offer the locals a beer.... AMBER WILSON, Mercury Subscriber only | June 7, 2020 5:05pm APRIL wasn’t a good month for Orford publican Alan Burdon. Only a week after the Blue Waters Hotel had been closed when the Prime Minister shut the nation’s pubs Mr Burdon’s establishment was struck by cataclysmic floods in early April. Flicking through a series of mobile phone photos showing the hotel’s dining area, pokies room, bottle shop and bar areas submerged in water, Mr Burdon recalled how suddenly his fortunes had changed on March 23. Our accommodation had been constantly full. We averaged 200 meals on a Friday and Saturday nights, he said. I had a 60th booked for 80 people that would have brought in six-grand for the night, and it was a string of cancellations after that. He said a drainage problem in the township meant that water coming in during a huge downfall had burst through the hotel and caused huge damage bills. We’re never going to recover what we’ve lost, he said. Now, with the coronavirus restrictions lifting, Mr Burdon is permitted to have 40 people inside his hotel. Locals and visitors are flocking back, and he’s easily booked out each night for dinner. But with the dining room area full, Mr Burdon isn’t permitted any more patrons who would normally spend an evening drinking in the bar area. The blokes that want to come drink and have a beer with their mates can’t and that’s frustrating, he said. We’ve got staff we can’t bring back until we have the numbers to accommodate them. I don’t know what normality is going to be like for a while for us, until we can get some more people in here.

05.01.2022 From our elected representatives. 9 Melbourne Street PO Box 6, Triabunna 7190 Phone 03 6256 4777... MEDIA RELEASE Organisation: Glamorgan Spring Bay Council Subject: Triabunna Centre to open for Maria Island ferry restart Date: 12 June 2020 To coincide with the Maria Island ferry service recommencing, the Triabunna Visitor Information Centre will re-open on Monday, June 15. Glamorgan Spring Bay Council closed the Centre in March as a result of COVID-19, along with its other Centres at Swansea and Bicheno. Council management met with Encounter Maria Island and Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service last week to discuss the easing of the Tasmanian Government’s COVID-19 travel restrictions to ensure a smooth return for the ferry service and Council’s transition out of operating Visitor Information Centres by 31 October 2020. Mayor Debbie Wisby said the Triabunna Centre would be open daily between 9.30am and 4.30pm. Council will have COVID-19 procedures in place for the safety of staff and visitors. Encounter Maria Island will initially run a 10am departure service from Triabunna and a 3.30pm return trip from Darlington, every day except Tuesdays. The Company has advised all ferry passengers must check-in at the Centre at least 30 minutes prior to the departure time and will be provided with safety information and boarding procedures. Encounter Maria Island has put in place COVID-19 procedures, including cleaning of the vessel before and after each trip. Further information can be found on Encounter Maria Island’s website at www.encountermaria.com.au. For National Park information, on-island accommodation and park passes, refer to the Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service website at www.parks.tas.gov.au. Council has announced it will divest itself of operating the three Visitor Information Centres by 31 October 2020 to focus on delivering core services to ratepayers and residents. Council will continue to work with Encounter Maria Island, as well as government, regarding alternative options for Maria Island National Park visitors, the ferry and its passengers as a result of the decision. Mayor Wisby said the Swansea and Bicheno Visitor Information Centres will re-open in the next few weeks. Council met with tourism industry and government representatives in Swansea on Thursday to start mapping out a way forward in light of Council’s decision to move away from operating the Centres. The meeting included representatives from East Coast Tasmania Tourism, Break O’Day Council, the Department of State Growth and Tourism Tasmania. Mayor Wisby described the meeting as positive and that all the parties were committed to working together to ensure a long-term plan was in place to promote the region and support the local tourism industry. 03.01.2022 Dear Chamber Members past and present, No doubt you were as surprised and shocked as I was to find out via the media that the Triabunna, Swansea and Bicheno Visitor Information Centres (VIC’s) are to be closed by Council. Our thanks go out to a couple of the Councillors who ensured the centres were not to be immediately closed. Our sympathies go out to the tireless employees of the VIC’s in Triabunna, Swansea and Bicheno who were advised of the closures via e-mail. The Cha...mber had no idea this was going to happen and was never consulted or made aware of any issues facing the Visitor Centres. The Chamber will be asking council in writing for a full explanation as to why the VIC’s are to be closed and their future plans for the ratepayer owned land and buildings going forward. I am keen to have your views on this matter, how it affects your business or any other information you may regard as relevant. Please send any comments to me at [email protected] or ring me on 0437 134 133. In the meantime the Chamber Executive is working closely with East Coast Tourism, TICT and State politicians to look at how best to service the needs of East Coast visitor economy moving forward.
