25.01.2022 SCAM ALERT Scammers have set up a clone of the myGov website to trick you into sharing your login and bank account details, Stay Smart Online says. The scam... starts with a phishing email that looks like it is from Medicare, asking you to update your Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) details, so you can start receiving payments for Medicare benefits and claims. If you click on the link in the email you are taken a replica of the real myGov website. You’ll note the URL includes ‘.net’ instead of ‘.gov.au’, which is an indication the website is not a legitimate Australian Government domain! If you input your login details you are directed to also enter your secret security question and answer, before you’re taken to the fake Medicare website to input your bank account details. These emails and web pages feature myGov and Medicare design and branding, making them appear legitimate. Remember, clicking on the link and sharing your details gives these scammers access to your personal information, which they then use to steal your money and identity!

09.01.2022 Some banks are offering to pause repayments on business loans and home loans for up to six months. Be aware there is no use of the word "Freeze" in there. This means that after 6 months of interest continuing to pile on to your loan, with no repayments, you will actually owe a larger amount after the 6 months is over. Pay off this extra amount over thirty years and you can see why the banks are very happy to do this! Compassionate? not really! This may be helpful for some cu...stomers in a hard time at the moment, but come on banks, freeze the interest too! Maybe you can ask your bank to do this if you are in this position! See more

07.01.2022 Some banks (CBA is the one I looked at) are offering 3 year business loans of up to $250,000 to help with cash flow. Note that the interest is still around 5.5% reducing to 4.5%, then who knows what after 12 months?. Although repayments (not interest charges) are paused for the first 6 mths, you still need to pay off the loan completely in the remaining 30 months after that 6 mth period. Even without the interest, if fully drawn, that is over $8333 per month in repayments. Af...ter this virus has passed, the sting continues. Remember that this is not a handout even though this product (that will make much income for the bank) is introduced in a time of panic and is portrayed as "assistance in uncertain times". Read the fine print and think these things through carefully. This too shall pass, but these contracts are in force for three long years. See more

02.01.2022 Exciting News! The last budget has changed the rules around who can claim a tax deduction for making a contribution to their own super fund. This tax deduction used to be limited to those who are self employed or earning less than 10% from an employer, from 1 July 2017 this will be changing. https://www.ato.gov.au//Claiming-deductions-for-personal-/... If you are an employee and you would like to build up your super, and have that amount taxed at only 15% rather than a possible 34.5% or 39%, this may help you. It is subject to contribution maximum cap of $25,000 in total tax deductible contributions (from all sources) per year and there are a few age related rules too. eg. If you are earning $50,000 you are being taxed at 34.5% (incl medicare levy) on every dollar earned above $37,000, if you put $10000 in to your super you would only be taxed $1500 on that amount instead of $3450. This is a saving of $1950, or a return on your $10,000 investment of 19.5%. The catch is you can't access it straight away, it is building up for your retirement, but there are many things you can do with it inside your super too. Opening your own self Managed Fund to buy an investment property may be an option for you. We are happy to chat with you about this if you are excited about that idea. OTG Financial Services can help with that. 02 66992826.
