25.01.2022 As part of this year's Sculpture by the Sea exhibition, Other Architects was invited to create a succah for a special Succah by the Sea section in Marks Park, Tamarama. @succahbythesea is an initiative of @shalom_syd, curated and coordinated by @williamfeuerman and the wonderful @officefeuerman team. . The succah is a temporary booth that Jews erect and eat meals within during the annual harvest festival of Succot. Interestingly, there is no prescribed form for the succah but... rather a set of parameters for construction and enclosure that have been passed down through the ages. . Designed in collaboration with accomplished contemporary artist @izabelapluta, our Inside-Out Succah inverts the traditional inward facing enclosure. At the centre of the structure, where you would expect to find a walled space with a canopy of branches, there is an empty void. Instead, a ring of outward-facing benches - each conforming to the minimum dimensions of a kosher succah - wraps the structure, welcoming visitors and engaging with the surrounding environment. . The Inside-Out Succah is part of a village of six structures, with the others designed by @urtzigrau, @guille_pik, @charlottehaywood & @daykeeperscloth in collaboration, @raffaellorosselli, @scalearchitecture, @supermanoeuvre, and @lucyhumphreystudio. @sculpturebythesea opened yesterday and will run for three weeks. It was delightful to see our succah being occupied by people from all walks of life as a place for shade and rest in the park. We couldnt have done it without the tireless work of OA family and friends including @richardmortlock and Marion, Mick and Nikki, Owen, Andrew and John, Maggie at #DigitalFabrics, @thomasmaasters maasterful work on the tools and of course our own @jackgillbanks. . . . #otherarchitects #otherspaces #otherprojects #izabelapluta #insideout #insideoutsuccah #succahbythesea #sculpturebythesea #sydneyarchitecture #tamarama #succot #designingthebackground #squareincircle #jewishlife #rethinkingtradition See more

24.01.2022 Three years ago we occupied @seangodsellarchitects extraordinary @rmitdesignhub gallery space with an enormous wall that acted as an exhibition framework, backdrop and divider. The gallery is 7m wide, 8m tall and 35m long, and the wall reached 6.5 tall at its apex. #occupiedrmit was curated with @somethingtogether and @kate_riggs and produced by @nellathemelios, with graphics by @sphogan. The installation was carefully constructed by @cbdcontracting and Design Hub technici...ans/wizards Erik North, Timothy McLeod, Robert Jordan, Sam Fagan and Gavin Bell. Following the exhibition, the wall was de-installed and its parts reused by @rmitarchitecture students and staff. The exhibition was a finalist for the Victorian Premiers Design Prize. . . . 24.01.2022 Our work across a range of cemetery projects is featured in the current issue of Architecture Australia, including our Islamic Cemetery gathering space, an essay by @dneus on the recent history of British/Australian burial practice, and Burial Belt, our speculative proposal for occupying and reforesting grazing land via natural burial, in turn altering the aesthetics of the Australian funerary industry. 24.01.2022 At some point during this inward journey the memory of the street has been left behind. Slowly the eye begins to adjust to the prayer rooms lofty ceiling and many soft gradients if shadow. @dneus had the privilege of writing about @angelo_candas Punchbowl Mosque for the current issue of @thearchitecturalreview. It was a challenge to capture the qualities of this project at a time of great cultural and political tension. Thanks @manon.mollard & @eabeaumont for the opportun...ity. Link to story in bio. 24.01.2022 Two weeks ago we were privileged to have the opportunity to travel to Brisbane, spend time with Timothy Hill and visit a number of Donovan Hill projects, in preparation for @dneus article for @themonthlymagazine. Our Brisbane trip followed excursions to @partnershills recent award-winning and totally extraordinary projects, @dlonghouse and #mermaidmultihouse. In this picture you can see the Z Houses living room bay window lapping onto a courtyard jungle. You can imagine the sound of wind chimes and a fragile frangipani held by a single wire. As the working year draws to a close our minds are still busy, wandering these beautiful and inventive buildings and spaces in a state of total revelry.

22.01.2022 One more week of Succah by the Sea and our contribution with Izabela Pluta.

21.01.2022 Two years ago we moved into our own dedicated @carriageworks studio space, courtesy of the Clothing Store residency program. There we joined an extraordinarily inventive group of contemporary artists: @tullyarnot @mikaladwyer @nellartist @phaptawans @tonyalbert @samuelhodge_ & @claudia__nicholson. The residency allowed for a luxurious amount of space and time, affording us the opportunity to reconsider both how we work and what we choose to work on. The environment shaped us ...as much as we shaped it. Inspired by the work of the great Donald Judd, the furnishings we designed and installed (with help from fabricators @mnrconstructions, @richardmortlock and his team) were devised for assembly without nails or glue, allowing for easy disassembly and transportation. About six months ago we put this method to the test when we made way for the incoming group of Clothing Store residents; our total workspace packed down into the space of a small storage container, ready for rapid redeployment. Photographs by @kasiawerstak and drawings by @daria_nsv, more images online. 21.01.2022 St Thomas Rest Park, Cammeray. Established as a cemetery in 1845, this small burial ground accommodated 11,000 graves before its 1974 conversion into community parkland. In a move which seems no less radical today, most of the headstones were removed and the plots grassed over, with only the most significant monuments curated into an open air museum. Today, the park is an archipelago of solitary obelisks and raised platforms with clustered headstones, floating within a sea of lawn. Berms separate the park from neighbouring houses. Groves of Turpentines, Casuarinas, Acacias and Banksias screen the site and divide it into distinct rooms. @death_by_design_ @ St Thomas' Rest Park

21.01.2022 Construction of Room House, in the Southern Highlands region of New South Wales, commences in a matter of weeks. This is a view of the houses western facade, deliberately windowless to dramatise the experience of arrival and exclude the harsh afternoon sun. Designed to feel like a single, generous room, the houses interior consists of a deep living space and elongated bedroom divided by a floating joinery partition. Light scoops in the ceiling bring different atmospheric co...nditions into the plan. External sliding windows and doors have been detailed to retract entirely from view, while the entire footprint is elevated on a seat-height plinth that creates the feeling of floating over the landscape. We look forward to sharing the projects progress on site! . . . #otherarchitects #otherprojects #othersites #otherspaces #roomhouse #southernhighlands #regionalarchitecture #australianarchitecture #arcadia #villa #weekender #arrival #landscape #prospect #refuge #countryside #bucolic image by #lindsaymulligan See more

18.01.2022 We’re so honoured that the Australian Ambassador to Germany, H.E. Mr Philip Green OAM, took the time to engage with our work at @aedesberlin @aedesmetrolab. #BurialBelt was hugely influenced by Berlin: A Green Archipelago, the 1977 project led by Oswald Mathias Ungers, Rem Koolhaas, Peter Riemann, Hans Kollhoff, Arthur Ovaska et al that embraced a degrowth model for the postwar city, so it’s apt that the project is on exhibition in Berlin. Our sincere thanks to @miriammlecek ...and the Aedes team for the opportunity! Posted @withregram @ausemb_de Yesterday, Ambassador Green took advantage of the glorious sunshine in Berlin to see the @aedesberlin's #architecture campus and the Australian feature in their latest exhibition by Sydney’s @otherarchitects. The exhibition looks at how we can we rethink cities, living spaces and working environments in a way that restores a social and economic balance. 16.01.2022 Burial Belt 2019 Oslo Architecture Triennale. . . Project team @dneus @gracemortlock @many_over @responsiblerowan @jackgillbanks @sora.koyama ... . . Burial Belt proposes repurposing denuded grazing land for natural burial. Burial funds the revegetation of the native environment, replacing high-emissions livestock farming with carbon-filtering forest. Beyond basic costs, individuals can invest as much as they like in this endeavour, potentially greening acres and offsetting life-long carbon vices. While those buried in this new cemetery will have no lasting monuments and will decompose into the soil, burial space is provided in perpetuity, providing a permanent covenant over the land. Eventually, burial sites connect to form a continuous green belt that encompasses the city fringe and constrains sprawl. . View of forest clearing pictured. More on OA website. See more

09.01.2022 The @cityofsydneys Alternative Housing Ideas Challenge could not have come at a more urgent time: Sydney is the worlds third-least affordable city, contains eight of Australias ten highest earning postcodes and yet accounts for a quarter of the nations homeless population. There is a critical undersupply of dwellings suitable for low-income families, intergenerational households and other shared living arrangements, and - thanks to the state governments fire sale of inne...r city social housing stock - its only getting worse. So it was heartening to see the intelligent proposals by @andy_fergus @sundermann @alexiskalagas @asa_alexandersymesarchitect @panovscott @alysia_bennett @damian.madigan @danacuff @vigilantidesign @urban_apostles and others, selected by a great jury from 203 international submissions, that suggest strategies for provision of affordable housing at a range of scales. We had the privilege of working with architect, academic and housing expert @aliciapoz on our scheme. Entitled Inside-Out Housing, and recognising that architectural design is one small part within the framework of housing affordability, our proposal inverts the typical apartment building, reducing the number of internalised rooms and expanding balconies to provide a more energy-efficient, economical and spatially flexible alternative. Living areas and private open space merge into a continuous horizontal expanse of balcony: a partially-enclosed, indoor/outdoor room attuned to Sydneys increasingly hot and humid environment and able to be subdivided into separate compartments as required. You can read more about the idea on our website and were keen to hear what you think. Inside-Out Housing is indebted to a number of references, from the early work of Neutelings, Wall, De Geyter and Roodbeen to contemporary projects by @j_self, @Rachaporn n_ch and @maioarchitects. #otherarchitects #otherprojects #insideouthousing #continuousbalcony #cityofsydney #alternativehousingideaschallenge #dezeen #archdaily #afasia #koozarch #sydneyarchitecture #competitionproposal #designideas #hedonisticsimplicity #blurredboundaries

06.01.2022 An image of the northern elevation of Room House, which will hopefully be the last imagined view of the project before construction gets underway. An almost perfect 12x12m square in plan, the design of this house involved a push and pull of proportions, dimensions and alignments to balance informality and precision, enclosure and openness. External sliding doors and windows move along tracks recessed into the rough-rendered facade, while the carpet of travertine flooring sp...ills out into outdoor rooms at either end of the plan. 01.01.2022 Burial Belt 2019 Oslo Architecture Triennale. . . Project team @dneus @gracemortlock @many_over @responsiblerowan @jackgillbanks @sora.koyama ... . . What if we could solve Australias burial crisis by healing its natural environment? Burial Belt is a proposal by Other Architects that rethinks the logistics, experience and environmental impact of burial. Responding to dwindling reserves of urban cemetery space and widespread deforestation, Other Architects envisions the gradual acquisition and transformation of sparse grazing land on the city fringe to create beautiful green landscapes for natural burial. In this proposal, burial plots are planted in the earth along with native vegetation, allowing re-forestation to occur with birds, mammals, reptiles and insects gradually reoccupying the area. Cemetery sites are managed like natural parkland, complete with low-impact walkways and facilities and a team of horticulturalists who monitor and maintain the environment. Over a short span of time, burial spaces would be subsumed by forest. Eventually, individual cemetery sites could join together as a continuous green belt, linking areas of remnant habitat and constraining urban and industrial sprawl. Dispensing with headstones, paved pathways, coffins and chemical preservatives, natural burial minimises ecological disturbance, with trees, scrub and wildlife supplanting the dense rows of graves found in traditional cemeteries. While those interred in this progressive model of burial ground would have no lasting monuments and would slowly decompose into the soil, leaving little trace behind, burial spaces would be provided in perpetuity, providing a permanent covenant over the land that preserves the forest for eternity. . . View of burial ring at edge of clearing pictured.
