25.01.2022 Susan Watson Knight Lit from Within ONLINE EXHIBITION OPENS TODAY 25.06.20 - 09.07.20... Susan Watson Knights new collection of works, Lit from Within, marks a return to paint on cloth and the unusual synthesis of pigment with photography. The result from the Melbourne-based visual artist is a kinetic series of works that unites the use of form and repetition with unexpected colour harmonies. The title of the new series takes its name from an exhibition of Amish quilts held at the National Gallery of Victoria in 1997. Susans encounter with these works was seminal; she was drawn as much to the history of the quilts as to their strict geometry and vibrant colour structure. The quilts were the focused artistic expression of individual women as objects of beauty and purpose; carefully designed, meticulously stitched and then gifted to family members. A recent studio relocation unearthed the book that accompanied the 1997 exhibition and this ignited a creative starting point for Lit from Within. Susan found the Amish quilts compelling for several reasons, but most particularly because the designs were curiously prophetic. The modular arrangements of the quilts from a century ago were conceived and completed well before the colour field paintings that emerged in New York during the 1940s. The quilts were created and stitched by a closely-knit group of women who were isolated from English culture and the reductionist fundamentals of Modernism. Susan has responded to the precise geometries, delicate surfaces and luminous colour harmonies sewn by the Amish quilters. The quilting shapes in her new series have been exaggerated and take on an emblematic or symbolic characteristic, at times communicating solemnity and emotional stillness. The edges of the geometric shapes are softened to such an extent that some surfaces engage in optical trickery, but in every instance colour maintains the controlling hand, dictating the mood, potency and energy transmitted by these images. Written by Kate Racovolis. Pictured - Birdcage by #SusanWatsonKnight, Archival Pigment Print, Limited Edition 9, 100 x 100 cm.

This exhibition is an exploration of this complexity within the context of art.The included works derive from myriad countries, cultures, mediums and motivations yet are powerfully unified by each artist's unique perception of what denotes ‘small.’ Though this notion may be predominantly physical, the ability for art to amplify, resonate and reverberate lends to a potency that is anything but meagre. As the world navigates disruption, it is the quiet power of the small, possibly minuscule moments and connections, that may ultimately prove to be our redemption. 20.01.2022 Congratulations to Rick Eckersley on the release of the magnificent - Rogue: Art of a Garden. It was a total joy to be part of the journey! Musk Cottage garden is maverick designer Rick Eckersleys own private garden. It is the culmination of decades of experimentation in Australian landscape gardening and an emphatic expression of the loose, almost painterly approach to landscape design that Eckersley is renowned for. Rogue: Art of a Garden documents and explores this remar...kable Australian landscape and the sensibility that produced it. Much like the garden itself, it is far from orthodox. A selection of artworks by Australian artists (several represented by Otomys Contemporary), created in response to the garden, form richly subjective layers of interpretation. Short reflections by Eckersley of his work on the garden, and his learnings from a lifetime spent working within the Australian landscape, round out a publication that strives to capture the spirit of a landscape that has transcended the dogma and conventions of Australian gardening, to become an immersive, total work of art. 19.01.2022 Online catalogue now live - https://otomys.com/artists/caroline-denervaud/. Following the recent success of Caroline Denervauds (sell out) online exhibition with Otomys Contemporary, we have received a new collection of work from Caroline in Paris, France. Please direct any further questions to [email protected]. Through painting, film and stills I try to find that moment when the unbalance is balanced and the balance is unbalanced. Its a question of here and now, intrinsic ...emotions are my guide. In my paintings, forms and colours play around balance in space. The quiet abstract compositions hide stories, the feeling is fixed on paper. Caroline Denervaud. Pictured - Le Rêveur En Dedans by Caroline Denervaud, Caséine on Paper, Original, 78 x 106 cm.

19.01.2022 Introducing Cape Town's Alexia Vogel to Otomys Contemporary!! Alexia’s selected works for SMALLS have sold within the exhibition. To view Alexia’s complete catalogue of work that has arrived in Melbourne, please make contact via [email protected] or live chat with us at otomys.com. With a lush tactility and heady mystique, the painted worlds of Alexia Vogel translate the amoebic, sublime nature of nostalgia, fantasy and wanderlust into vast, immersive canvases and vivid works o...n paper. Her imagined paradises disavow the logic of time in order to reach a space and state more felt than perceived, spaces of sustained reverie and suspended sensation. With her mark making directed by instinct and spontaneity, Alexia allows the tactility of the paint and its autonomous movement across the surface of the canvas to direct her process. Moments of lucidity dissolve into states of dreamy meditation as the artist intuitively shifts between abstraction and figuration. Pictured - Sticky Swims by Alexia Vogel, Watercolour Monotype on Hahnemühle, Original, 35.1 x 41.6 cm.

18.01.2022 Now in London (and online)!! We are most excited to have received a new collection of Marises work which has arrived safely in the United Kingdom. To receive a catalogue, please make contact via [email protected]. Marise Maas is a Dutch born, Melbourne based artist. Her figurative work deals with making the unimportant important - looking at the smaller details to find the bigger stories. Maas has been fascinated with horses and horse riding since childhood and the repeated ...depiction of horses within her works represents a form of symbolic stand-in for the often humorous, often tender, qualities of human desire and longing. 'While emotive connotations exist in her work, Maas pays greatest attention to the formal concerns of art making in particular composition, line, shape and texture. Here she takes her cues from abstract art, embracing textured surface-qualities and flat two-dimensional space by painting large fields of monochrome colour. Often cool, neutral tones of grey and black are contrasted with bolts of turquoise, red or orange as the artist keeps her palette restricted and minimal. This allows the viewers focus to remain on the artists rich and variegated spectrum of mark-making. - Marguerite Brown, 2017. Pictured - Number One by Marise Maas, Oil and Acrylic on Paper, Original, 50 x 70 cm.

Greg Wood and Sophia Szilagyi Eternal Shift 06.08.20 - 21.08.20 We invite you to enter the Viewing Room via https://otomys.com/exhibitions/. Further enquiries via [email protected]. 'I dont consciously imagine or paint a landscape - my paintings are triggered by a memory or emotion around a landscape scene. A landscape experience exists and then you move away from it and it leaves a trace; the memory or experience of it lingers. There is no specific or actual place I refer to, in that sense the places I paint are abstract and imagined. Layering paint on the canvas without consciousness allows for pure abstraction, but then consciousness kicks in along with realism, and as these states of mind merge your eyes suddenly see a literal reference to the landscape. - Greg Wood.

09.01.2022 To view new large scale oils by Ben Crase, please make contact via [email protected] or live chat with us at otomys.com. Ben Crase is an American figurative painter. Originally from Butte, Montana, Ben is now based out of San Diego, California. Ben paints primarily with oil and oil sticks. Through his use of colour, texture, and off-kilter composition, Ben seeks to evoke an emotional response from the viewer - one that may feel vaguely familiar and rooted in the past. 'I’m not ...a trained artist, but ever since I was very young, I have been going to museums and galleries, so this was my art education. Much of what I saw made me feel alive and inspired. I think you could argue that the value of life could simply be to feel alive. In my painting I use colour that creates that sense of feeling alive, that feeling of inspiration and motivation. So, the painting process for me becomes a layering of colour until I reach that point.’ - Ben Crase. 06.01.2022 Welcoming Piet Raemdonck to Otomys Contemporary! Piets work will be launched within his upcoming online exhibition - Residere: 16.07.20 - 31.07.20. To request a pre sale catalogue, please make contact via [email protected]. Piet Raemdonck is a Belgian artist who lives and paints from his studio near Ghent. Piet is stimulated by his surroundings and his work focuses on still life, landscape and interior spaces. His paintings play with contrast, between the naïve and the classic...al, between abstract geometry and distinctive romanticism. The movement of the brush or crayon may resemble primitive expression and his work is rich in texture. Colour is at the core of Raemdoncks work. He is fascinated by the the way in which colours communicate in and influence one another. A painting can be perceived as a group of colours that both converge and diverge. - Piet Raemdonck. It is about a desire to settle down. The Latin word Residere comes from 're' - meaning back and 'sedere' - to sit. A need to settle down but not to becoming too static, rather balanced and focused. - Piet Raemdonck. Rebekah Stuart Natures Denouement 11.09.20 - 25.09.20... 'Natures Denouement comprises a body of works and movement soliloquies created from my imaginings. Here in, I have collected details small and large, from nature, that emulate qualities of an inner primordial craving. In recent unpredictable times, I have clung to natures ability to thrive gracefully and effortlessly. Recent clearer skies have brought about a more intensive vibrancy; the crisp interplay of light and dark upon forms highlighting for me, a glorified primacy that, through nature, draws out our inner power. - Rebekah Stuart. 04.01.2022 The work of Piet Raemdonck as housed within the ever striking Antwerp Office by OOG3! To further discover the work of Piet Raemdonck, jump online and enter Piet's current Viewing Room - via https://otomys.com/exhibitions/. Piet Raemdonck... Residere 16.07.20 - 31.07.20 'This body of work is a reflection and a turning point in my life, leaving Antwerp after almost 30 years and moving to the countryside where I grew up. It is about a desire to settle down. The Latin word Residere comes from 're' - meaning back and 'sedere' - to sit. A need to settle down but not to becoming too static, rather balanced and focused. The Residere series was created over a period of two years. Pavillion is the earliest work in the series. It was made after three trips to Cuba over a year, staying at a Havana Beach House. Scharnierstraat shows a street in Antwerp that turns, not yet revealing where it is going. Breekwerk, Klein Breekwerk, Project, Assembly and Sun from the South are all observations of my newly renovated Studio / Home. These works embody the fresh start and energetic transformation. During our renovation, I have experienced unexpected beauty and romanticism in still life. - Piet Raemdonck. Image courtesy of OOG 3 Interieurarchitectuur.
