25.01.2022 Who said therapy had to be boring?! Heres our Occupational Therapist Jed after some sensory play. Sensory play can help with feeding, sensory processing issues, anxiety, and socialisation (its also super fun!)

25.01.2022 Animal walks are awesome for gross motor coordination, strength building, proprioception, crossing the midline (and much more!). This is why OTs love moving like animals and why many of us have to keep practicing our animal moves! Here is a great dice you can make up and roll. Other animals you could add might include: a bear, crab, snake, turtle, donkey kicks, kangaroo.... A few rolls of this dice are great as a quick break during school homework time too.

25.01.2022 Heres a cute little handwriting aid for helping children to write in the lines. Some letters fit just in the cats body (e.g. a, c, e), some letters also use the cats head space (e.g. b, d, h), and others use the tail space as well (e.g. p, q, y). Using an craft/ice block stick, draw the cat so that it lines up with the exercise book lines. The stick can then slide along as the child writes and can be useful for spacing between words as well! (Please note: The font in the image is to show the Clever Cat idea, each Australian state and territory school system has its own preferred handwriting font). 25.01.2022 A super simple way to practice zipping zips: Bread packet ties on wide ribbon. Just like a normal zip, hold at the base (of the ribbon) with one hand and use the other hand to slide the tag. Great for motor planning, pincer grasp, and bilateral coordination . [Image source: sugaraunts.com]

24.01.2022 Multi-sensory letter learning: the child can flatten play dough on a tray, then push a marble over it to make the letter. Then increase the bilateral coordination difficulty by challenging the child to guide the marble through the letter shape without touching it (tilt the tray!).

24.01.2022 How can OTs help with sensory processing issues? We know the brain is highly trainable and with repetition - we can cement new sensory pathways and strengthen motor circuitry - in short, we can make a difference in how minds process and respond to sensory input.

24.01.2022 Move and be happy!

24.01.2022 Have you seen the spinner fidgets that seem to be everywhere at the moment? Heres how to make them out of LEGO! (A how-to video is here: https://youtu.be/hzCexQxRc7w )

21.01.2022 The vestibular system is a vital for processing sensory information about balance (equilibrium), spatial orientation, and motion. This graphic helps to describe how the vestibular system responds to input.

17.01.2022 Timers are awesome to visually give kids time guidelines so they can manage of themselves and their environment for a duration. Timers also help with transitioning between activities and help little people to be able to build their sense of how long a period of time is. We have heaps of different timers available for purchase from the cute ones pictured here to more detailed special needs timer tools. Check them out next time youre in!!!

16.01.2022 Tip Tuesday! Encouragement and praise are one of the biggest motivators for any child. Praise is also a wonderful way to boost self-esteem and self-confidence.... It can have a powerful effect on children with learning and attention difficulties. It is also important to remember that it is better to praise your child for their efforts rather than their natural ability. Here are 101 different ways to praise a child! See more

15.01.2022 Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) (also known as dyspraxia) is a neurodevelopmental motor planning disorder. While DCD presents many challenges, occupational therapy helps to teach the brain and body to work together to organise, plan and coordinate thinking and movements.

14.01.2022 Ah, sensory calming... Happy Friday!

14.01.2022 Heavy work or doing activities which promote proprioceptive input can calm children with sensory issues while increasing attentive focus and reducing sensory seeking behaviours. Lifting, pushing, pulling heavy objects provides deep pressure to joints, ligaments and muscles to soothe and comfort the nervous system. Here are some ideas for heavy work activities: [Image source: www.andnextcomes.com]

11.01.2022 Bedtime tips from our psychologist We all have heard how important sleep is for keeping our bodies and brain healthy. But getting your child to sleep and keepin...g them asleep is not always easy. If youre having problems with this, rest assured you are not alone! The bottom line is that there is no right way to get a child to sleep through the night. All children are different, what works for one child is not going to necessarily work for another. What we do know is that having a good bedtime routine usually promotes good sleep. All children need routine it makes the world around them feel predictable and can help them feel safe. It also sends them signals to start to wind down before actually getting in bed. Here are 5 tips to help you start a good bedtime routine: 1. Create a 30 min quiet and calming routine - this can include a regular sequence of, for example, bath, pyjamas, drink, story, song and cuddles enables the child to calm down before falling asleep. 2. Be consistent - Once you have a plan, stick to it for at least two weeks. 3. Use rewards and praise - praise your child every time her or she gets it right use reward charts and incentives if you need 4. Forward thinking - Make a list of all the ploys and tactics your child uses to get out of going to bed it will help to strengthen your resolve! 5. Reconnect in a busy day this can be a special time to touch base with your small person and fill their love bucket. If youre finding bedtimes challenging our therapists would be happy to support you in creating an effective bedtime routine and overcoming difficult behaviours.
