05.01.2022 Medication- If your child was diagnosed with diabetes, would you let them have insulin? What about asthma? Under active Thyroid? Would you give them medication?... One of the biggest issues for children with ADHD is that people assume that it is behavioural problem or that diet can change what is occurring for the child. Sure, ANY child will act out of their skin if you give them red cordial and packets of lollies etc, but if this was the answer to ‘curing’ ADHD, we would have done this yeeeeears ago. ADHD medication has been noted for around a 100years. It is not new. ADHD research has been around even longer and is ongoing. If herbs, glutton free foods and oils had evidence based research to support it, we would all be doing it for our kids. ADHD is neurological NOT behavioural. You only identify it through behaviours you can see. With ADHD the area of your brain that allows you to focus is not being switched on as it is under activated. Not eating flour, taking oil or punishing your child to meet expectations, will not stimulate the neurons and make that part of their brain work. Medication will. Ironically we find that it is the children who want to trial it. They tell us they want to focus but can’t. They have ongoing repercussions of not being able to do what others can so effortlessly. They become depressed, bullied, judged and they carry the stigma for life. That is cruel. When in their teens, unmedicated ADHD kids often look to self medicate the wrong way and lack the impulse control and decision making to avoid it. They simply want to switch their brain on. If you are worried about medication remember trialling it does not mean that you have to continue if it does not work for your child. But trialling medication does give you the opportunity to make a grounded decision on whether it works for your child, and they can give you feed back on how it works for them. It can be life changing. See more

05.01.2022 Pencil Grasps what is a functional grasp? A functional grasp is one that allows the child to write legibly, write with adequate speed and write without discomfort. Did you know that a traditional tripod grasp is not necessarily required for legible and productive handwriting. These are some examples of alternative grasps (there are modified versions of these too) that can also be functional.... There is what we call the tripod grasp, thumb wrap grasp and the adaptive tripod grasp. Which grasp do you have when you write?
