20.01.2022 Inspiring Author, locally sourced and cooked community meal and local panel talking about how towns/individuals come be more resiliant, sounds good right? The Permaculture group is excited to host David Holmgren on Sunday 22nd March to talk about his new book: Retro Suburbia: the downshifters guide to a resilient future. Tickets are great value at $15 each. At this event, Holmgren will advance permaculture concepts and practical ideas as a framework for applying retrofits to... our homes, gardens and, most fundamentally, our behaviours. Holmgren will highlight the vital importance of household food growing and shared neighborhood activity in our everyday lives. Time: 4:30pm Where: Apollo Bay Community Centre Organised by: Otways & Coast Permaculture Group Tickets: $15, Buy online at https://events.humanitix.com.au/retrosuburbia or in person at the Southern Otway Food Coop on Tuesdays in Apollo Bay.

15.01.2022 Shocking and amazing

14.01.2022 Dear Colac Lets look at it from a bats perspective As you are aware the Operations Manager Frank Castles has informed me that the Colac Botanic Gardens Grey-hea...ded flying foxes are to be dispersed and an Eco-sure Management Plan implemented to prevent the bats from roosting in the Gardens in future. I have indicated our unhappiness with this decision and am aware that several thousand female flying foxes will soon arrive at the CBG to give birth and raise their young. There is nowhere else from them to roost as the Colac region is almost entirely denuded of trees and those that exist outside the Gardens are few and juvenile. COLAC: DONT KILL OUR BABY BATS! Please support Colacs Grey-headed flying fox camp in the Colac Botanic Gardens (CBG). Suggestions to include in correspondence: 1. The Grey-headed flying fox is listed as Vulnerable to Extinction under Federal and Victorian state legislation. They need our help not eviction! 2. Colac is devoid of alternative roosting habitat leaving the Gardens as the only place they can safely roost and raise young over summer. 3. If prevented from roosting, unmolested, in the cool of the CBG many, thousands, will die of heat stress over summer this is not acceptable 4. They are colony species and must roost together South Western Victoria is part of their established range 5. Grey headed flying fox numbers have declined by over 95% since 1900 6. The Chinese Pagoda Heritage Tree could have a sprayer in it while leaving all other trees for the bats to roost in 7. Several thousand female flying foxes will soon arrive in the CBG to birth and raise their dependent young for up to five months. 8. Indigenous Australia also counts as Heritage so stop harassing Australias bats! 9. The Grey headed flying fox trends south in summer and north in winter these patterns will continue. 10. Use dispersal money to undertake large-scale revegetation along the Western side of Lake Colac 11. Use dispersal money to install good interpretive signage in the CBG 12. Use dispersal money to conduct a broad public education campaign rather than a self-serving anti-indigenous bats pogrom 13. Celebrate the role the CBG is playing in the preservation of a keystone pollinating species for the benefit of Australias national garden 14. Local government is leading elsewhere in Victoria and NSW it is time Colac did its bit to embrace indigenous Australian wildlife 15. NOTE the stark difference between Colac Otway Shire and the Bayside City Council and the City of Yarra! The latter are 21st Century celebrations of Australia and the former a fearful and faintly ridiculous attempt to keep its Garden a frozen slice of the 19th Century. 12.01.2022 PICK MY PRODUCT - CLOSED LOOP UPDATE The shed is up and we are getting excited! Unfortunately the manufacture of our machine has been held up and wont be delivered untill February . We are disappointed as we were hoping to be able to process food waste this Christmas.... But not to worry, we still have plenty to do, fit out shed and concrete the driveway. We will be visiting businesses in the near future to discuss the operation of the composter and how you can become involved in the use of this facility.

12.01.2022 This is disgraceful why arent the loggers in lockdown like everyone else is supposed to be ?

10.01.2022 BREAKING: FOREST BLOCKADE ESTABLISHED THIS MORNING IN TOOLANGI Forest Conservation Victoria have set up a peaceful protest to stop logging operations within vit...al threatened species habitat and old growth forest along the Murrindindi River in Toolangi this morning, where a threatened Sooty Owl nesting site has been reported. A person is currently suspended 20 meters up a tree on a platform attached to logging machinery, protecting the area from being cleared for paper. Continued destruction of some of the worlds largest carbon stores, the Mountain Ash forests of Victoria, has left these ecosystems on the brink of collapse. With the city of Melbourne having just declared a climate and biodiversity emergency and Threatened Species Day this coming Saturday, its absurd that these logging practices are continuing with business as usual. Our government is dragging its feet on turning its words into action and were losing time we just cant afford. We will continue to stand up against these practices until we see an end to native forest logging.
