25.01.2022 Blue wren feather on Lepidosperma leaf. Browntown Track, Lavers Hill, Otway Rainforest.

25.01.2022 Great to see that our friend, author and farmer Charles Massy will feature on Australian Story next week: https://youtu.be/NVzjlhkGFjQ In his great book, The ...Call of the Reed Warbler, Charles recognises our work in the Otway Agroforestry Network and the Australian Agroforestry & the Master TreeGrower in changing the way farmers think about forestry. "This new form of agroforestry, in engendering concepts around multipurpose forestry, is based not just on restoring landscape function but also on building economic, ecological and social resilience into rural communities and landscapes." (see pages 418-421). We define agroforestry as the result of farmers growing trees for the reasons that are important to them. The result is a diversity of species, planting designs, management options and values that reflects the diversity inherent within the farming community. Our farm tours, education courses and mentoring programs help farmers understand the science, markets, practices, skills and the art of tree growing so that they can create unique forests that achieve the outcomes they want. After COVID-19 we'll be running more programs around the country. Email me to join our email list to be kept informed. If sharing please click "Include original post", thanks. 24.01.2022 These native grasslands are so rare, and so important.

24.01.2022 Spear grasses have an "awn"- like a stem on top of the seed which, when wet, swells and rotates to help the seed "screw" itself into the perfect position in the soil for germination. Mother Nature is amazing.

24.01.2022 It may not look like much, but this austral grass tree (Xanthorrhoea australis) was grown by us and planted here on our property about 30 years ago. What’s the old adage- the best time to plant a tree was 30 yrs ago. These grass trees are very slow growers so the second best time to plant them is NOW, especially with the decent rains we’ve had!

23.01.2022 According to "The Honey Flora of Victoria" Sweet Bursaria "yields both pollen and nectar, the honey is dark, often having a dark green appearance in the comb, and of a very unpleasant flavour. However, it is a very useful plant in an off season, or during a pollen famine." It is also one of the most important indigenous plants for providing habitat for native predatory insects and birds, as well as being a valuable member of any farm plantation.

23.01.2022 Congratulations to With One Seed and the Baguia community for all your work and dedication.

23.01.2022 Otway Greening will be here selling our new 2020 crop of plants.Hope to see you there!

22.01.2022 Ancient Musk Daisy growing in the Aire Valley, Otway Rainforest, southwest Victoria. There is so much beauty in the world. You just have to be on the lookout.

21.01.2022 What a surreal scene! The grass trees (Xanthorrhoea) are having the season of a lifetime in far-eastern Victoria. Hundreds are in bloom across fire-burnt country near Cape Conran. : Frank Flynn via ABC Gippsland

20.01.2022 Spring has sprung around the Pennyroyal Forest. The Love Creeper is showing it's beautiful self as it climbs up a snowy daisy bush.

18.01.2022 Who says the local gums arent beautiful? Messmate stringybark in full flower.

17.01.2022 Thanks Greening Australia for being a long time customer of Otway Greening. Your support is really appreciated.

17.01.2022 Been seed collecting over the past few months to grow plants for revegetating an area just below these beautiful Hopetoun Falls. A special jewel in the cool temperate rainforest of the Otway Ranges of Victoria Australia.

17.01.2022 Myrtle Beech at Maits Rest, Gadubanud Country. Tolkien-esque.

15.01.2022 How bout some beautiful fungi from the Cool Temperate Rainforest from the Otways. Sometimes we forget to look down...

15.01.2022 Wendy and I have sponsored the Novice Event at the Deans Marsh Sheep Dog Trial for many years. We love the Trial and enjoy helping out in any way we can. Another great Deans Marsh community gathering.

14.01.2022 We have such a wonderful team of workers this summer. Thanks for your thoughtfulness, flowers, plum crumble, diligent work and patience this week. Been tough...but we feel the love!

14.01.2022 Otway Greening still proud to be the sponsor of the Novice Section of the Deans Marsh Sheep Dog Trials. Why wouldnt we, its such a great community event. Get on down there, and tell your friends.

14.01.2022 Seed collecting journey no 2. Some of the plants Im collecting seed off are really nowhere near as photogenic as this fella. Keeping a safe distance near Browns Swamp, Modewarre.

13.01.2022 Seed collecting in the Cool temperate rainforest of the Otway Ranges finds many things. The coolest blue-est fungi, the bassian thrush (if I dont move, he cant see me), amazing mosses/lichens on currant bush trunks and a beautiful myrtle beech seedling growing in a rocky crevasse in the Aire River.

13.01.2022 See you at the Australian Plant Society Annual Plant Sale. This Saturday the 17th, 8:30am-4pm, 40 Lovely Banks Rd, Geelong. https://apsvic.org.au/event/aps-geelong-plant-sale-2/

13.01.2022 We have two types of customers- ones that love she oaks and ones that hate them. Where do you stand on the she oak debate?! I love everything about them- the wind whistling through the foliage, the drooping habit, the beautiful timber, the longevity of the species etc etc. Here you see the male tree on the left where the yellow male flowers cling to the end of the branches whereas you can just see the seed cones of the female tree on the right- the brown-red flowers are small but beautiful. They are both flowering now if you want to get out in the bush and have a gander. There are 4 species of she oak across the Otway region. The species in the photo is Allocasuarina verticillata- drooping she oak.

13.01.2022 Working our little Brunonias off here in the nursery trying to help keep the Otways stay green!

12.01.2022 Hi friends. Wendy, Mike and our marvellous team of Prickettes have been beavering away all summer pricking out plants and now theyre jumping out of their pots. If youre wanting to plant some natives, please dont wait too long, orders have been coming in fast and furious...

12.01.2022 Seed collecting season has begun- mostly native grasses at the moment but found some beautifully photogenic featherheads proudly displaying their blossoms north of Winchelsea.

11.01.2022 Found...Banyalla seed poo plop atop a fence post. The process of digestion really does help germination... Banyalla (Pittosporum bicolor) is a seriously important understorey tree in the high rainfall forests of the Otways.

11.01.2022 A whole seed head of fairy wallaby grass (Rytidospermum geniculatum) germinating in the seed tray. These will be ready for sale in the autumn.

09.01.2022 Blanket Leaf (Bedfordia arborescens) is one of the most interesting understory tree species of the Otway Region. So "rainforesty" if that is a word! It's beautiful and so different from other understory species. It is a member of the Daisy family along with Olearia, Cassinia, Ozothamnus. It is also known as the natural alternative to Sorbent (when caught short...), if you know what I mean!

08.01.2022 Spring has sprung around the Pennyroyal Forest. The Love Creeper is showing its beautiful self as it climbs up a snowy daisy bush.

08.01.2022 Sharing some pics of our happy plants at Otway Greening Nursery - the first picture is from mid-March, and the other just a few days ago. All 49,000 of these lu...sh-looking seedlings are destined for #RestoringAustralia sites in the Otways and Victorian Volcanic Plains. Theyll be helping stabilize slopes and control erosion, creating shelter belts that protect stock from harsh winds, and providing habitat for birds and other wildlife. The early Autumn rains in this part of the country mean well start planting some of these beauties by the end of the month! All thanks to the Restoring Australia initiative, which sees two trees planted for every one used, based on the weight of paper based products bought by Officeworks customers.

07.01.2022 Can you spy the brown thornbill residing in our tubes of Silver Everlasting plants. What an amazing nest. Looks like we wont be selling these plants until mum and chicks vacate! Bloody nature...

07.01.2022 white jelly fungus on a messmate log. Wet forest, Otways- of course.

07.01.2022 Tent web weaver spider web in Hedge Wattle, Rokewood. Seriously intricate. I couldn't believe some of it wasn't some human made fibre stuck in the prickles. Nature is...amazing.

05.01.2022 10 years ago, I set out on a journey with an amazing couple from Baguia, Timor-Leste. John Tadeo Gusmao and Leopoldina Guterres trusted an idea I got from Tim F...lannerys book Now or Never to replant the degraded lands around Mt Matebien in Baguia and earn income for the community from selling the stored carbon. It was when Australia was taking action of climate change and had a price on carbon. 10 years on, with around 250,000 trees under management, 986 participating tree farmers, 80,000 tCO2e removed from the global atmosphere and over US$300,000 paid to the tree farmers of Baguia WithOneSeed is a successful social enterprise. Today a contract was signed in Dili at the residence of Dr Jos Ramos-Horta by the Europen Union Ambassador H.E. Andrew Jacobs and Oxfam TL Country Director Kathy Richards. The contract worth 3m (AU$4.6m) is to expand the Baguia tree program across Timor-Leste. While there were many challenges I knew WithOneSeed (Ho Musan Ida) would succeed as it was led by an extraordinary woman in Leopoldina Guterres. See more

04.01.2022 Such an important habitat plant as well as a beautiful addition for any garden.

04.01.2022 Gonna be a huge crop of River Red Gum seed this winter. Every tree seems to be covered in seed just like these at the beautiful Rokewood Reservoir.

03.01.2022 While in Corona isolation, the young son of an Otway Greening customer built a village depicting all the various important services in a village. The green house in the middle is Otway Greening. Glad to know were considered essential!!

03.01.2022 Seed collecting in the Cool Temperate Rainforest in the gloriously beautiful Otway Ranges. This Mountain Ash (Eucalyptus regnans) is really that big. They were all flowering and saw lots of beehives in the area. My day job is pretty alright!

03.01.2022 What a mess mate!

03.01.2022 The importance of a Tree, we have to take care of our planet #wedontdeservethisplanet

01.01.2022 I often have my doubts about the success of a reveg planting when I see photos of lots of tree guards scattered across the countryside without a single tree poking its head out of the guards. Well, here I am, showing a photo of lots of tree guards without a single tree poking its head above the guards. I do know however, how much work went into this planting- the weed control, the preparation, the labour...the effort for this landholder and contractors to see this job through to the end. A tough job. Revegetation is definitely not an easy task- but certainly an important task.

01.01.2022 The elusive Lomatia fraseri or Tree Lomatia flowering along a stretch of the Gellibrand River. What a glorious member of the Otway plant community. Elusive, not rare, but you never see many of them in one place. When you think of the Australian Proteas, you might conjure up Banksia or Grevillea but the Lomatia is also a Protea but unlike the others which mostly enjoy the tough heathy country, Tree Lomatia loves the high rainfall and moist soils of our river valleys. Can't wait to collect some seed in a couple months.

01.01.2022 The Wye River and Separation Creek revegetation support program is an initiative to assist fire-affected properties in Wye River and Separation Creek. The progr...am is contributing to community recovery by supporting the efforts of landholders to revegetate their fire-affected properties. Over the life of the program some 7500 native plants will be given to the community for planting on private land. This program is funded by the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) and is being delivered by the Southern Otway Landcare Network (SOLN). It is also supported by the Capital Wye River / Separation Creek Vegetation Restoration Committee. Requests for plants for the Winter - Spring 2020 planting season to participate in this program are now being sought - the online Expression of Interest form is available on Councils website. Please submit requests to participate by Friday 12 June. https://www.colacotway.vic.gov.au//Revegetation-Support-Pr
