24.01.2022 Welcome JJ to the McDowells Australian Brumby Challenge! We are delighted to welcome Trainer JJ Bracey to the McDowells Australian Brumby Challenge! JJ applied ...to undertake the ABC but due to our COVID restrictions, it didn’t look like it was possible for her to do it. That is, until Tamara Janus withdrew for family reasons. That left the Brumby she had been training, VBA Fiora, in need of a trainer and JJ was thrilled to step up and take Fiora on! JJ is 16 years old. She is from the Northern Territory, where she works with a variety of horses, including her local Brumbies. She enjoys getting to know each horse that comes her way and helping them find their potential. Fiora has safely arrived with JJ in the Northern Territory and is settling in well. She has had a quiet week, while she and JJ get to know each other. As JJ commences training Fiora, she will be going right back to the beginnings to ensure that Fiora understands JJs approach and keep things simple and reliable for Fiora. We are really looking forward to following JJ and Fiora through the rest of the McDowells Australian Brumby Challenge!
22.01.2022 I've just spent an hour and a half on the phone regarding the NSW legal action, the why's the how's the lot. This case HAS solid legal standing. If we cant raise the funds for this court case there will be NO Kosciusko Brumbies left. (Parks count pre fires states 25000 brumbies are in KNP - which we know is false. A post fire count was done by SMBUG and they counted 1139 on the 28th febuary. NPWS have stated they aim to remove 4000) We ALL need to get behind this. Not only... until the injuction goes through, the injunction does NOT mean the brumbies are safe, we need to support the court case 100%. 4000 members in this group, if every person could put in just $10 each, it WILL make a huge difference. I personally know the treasurer keeping track of all the donations, and trust this person without question. I have also been advised that if the court case is won and NPWS are ordered to pay court costs, each and every donation will be returned to the donors. Please if you can, just $10, a loaf of bread and carton of milk at the end of the day. 18.01.2022 Please everyone get on the website and have a look at the info on the wild horse trapping program, regulations, stakeholder emails etc. It is all on there. Figu...res for removals so far, figures for those released back into park etc. Application process, transport infortmation, everything you need. NPWS DO NOT remove mares with foals at foot, they are released from traps. NPWS will ONLY remove youngsters of weaning age IF they are not dependent on their dam still (ie if they are still feeding off the dam they are released togther) There are rehomers who step up exclusively for youngsters and they do a wonderful job taking these young on for training and rehoming. The website also has a list of names and contact details for rehomers who have taken from the trapping program this year (not all rehomers are listed as some elected not to have their details shared publically) See more
17.01.2022 Where are we all at with saving the Brumbies? Not sure if I can honestly answer that. What we do know is an urgent injunction has been sought today by Snowymoun...tainbrumby Action Group in the Land and Environment Court. At the proceedings today the Dept. gave an undertaking that from this afternoon until 2.00 p.m. tomorrow they would not trap, remove or cull any horses- BUT- they would continue to work on setting up the traps at the trap-sites. A further hearing is set down for 2.00 p.m. tomorrow to hear further the application. A court date is expected to be set in about four to six weeks time. Raising funds is now incredibly important without the funds the case won't be heard and the trapping of ALL the Kosciusko Brumbies will resume immediately. As far as I know, (and if I am wrong on this I would very much like to hear it and then we can all save a huge amount in legal fees) NOTHING else is going to help them immediately, as in right now. They have a very good team, standing and SUPPORT from some long standing and well respected Brumby Groups. In VIC, Phil Maguire has succeeded in keeping the guns at bay for now. Not sure what happens next there, they have huge debt from two failed court cases so raising enough for the next stage seems to be a huge mountain to climb. But let's not give up. Marilyn Nuske is working hard to change legislation in VIC and the petition is being tabled on August 4th by Wendy Lovell MP. I believe there is also lots of good work being done by a few other Brumby Groups which involves rehab and rehoming. Over the next few days we will be speaking to as many Brumby Groups as we can and invite them to give us all a clear idea of their mission statements. For now though, the urgent focus of attention is on the Kosciusko Brumbies if we don't raise the money, there will no longer be Snowy Mountain Brumbies. I will pin details of the fundraiser into the announcement section. Please help them.
13.01.2022 What a very long day.... Court went from 9.30am to 4.45pm. Decision reserved until next Friday, although judge may hand her decision down earlier. No way to tel...l which way it will go, we were very strong but so were they. Orders for trap yards to remain locked open & no horses to be removed stay in force until decision is handed down. This does not mean the fight for the precious Vic Brumby's lives is lost, it merely means we have only public protest and dissent left in our arsenal. As horribly deflating as the Vic loss is, we must shift our focus to the NSW brumbies who stand to be imminently decimated by trapping and removal to slaughter in the immediate future and the ONLY alternative is the proposed legal action by SMBSMG. There is no mistake we are absolutely in the 11th hour; our financial contributions at this point in time can speak volumes and we MUST make them so overwhelmingly loud there is no possible way the Gov't, or in fact the entire country, can block out the sound of Australian's who are utterly determined to hold on to their iconic living heritage, with their will and their back pocket. 12.01.2022 Hi I'm an admin of NSW BRUMBIES FB PAGE and a rehomer of Kosciusko Brumbies I'm located in Central Queensland with my husband Paul Johnston. NSW PARKS is about ...to resume trapping of our magnificent Heritage Horses 200 year old genetic's, nature's selection process of survival of the fitest these horses are strong, intelligent, beautifully natured and well put together they are truly worth saving we've personally rescued 15 that's turned into 20 in August 2020 but more home's are desperately needed NOW there are pregnant Mare's, colt's, fillies and magnificent Stallions sizes range roughly between 13-14.5 hh Parks require a minimum of 5 to be taken in each application but that's only the minimum so we are desperately seeking people interested in taking on these gorgeous Brumbies so we are organising large groups to be rescued for those people who can only take on 1 or 2 or where the distance for transport is to costly anywhere in Australia from Nth QLD to SA. 30 went to SA in 1 load to be rehomed we are fund raising to help with a small part of the transport costs associated for people but we need home's if your interested or know someone who might be please Share This Post and contact us at NSW BRUMBIES. The Nsw Brumbies transport fundraiser is to offer financial assistance TOWARDS transportation (we are not going to cover the entire transport costs - and how much will be assessed on a case by case basis and by the balance of our fundraiser) this fundraiser is ongoing not just here & now & for the horses trapped today - but the horses trapped next week & the week after. My goal here is to get as many horses coming out of the park into homes rather than knackeries. This is urgent, lives are on the line situation. I'm not fundraising to cover food costs (if you're taking horses & can't cover their food then perhaps you shouldn't take one), or vet bills, or gelding, or branding etc. We are offering assistance for transportation ONLY as right now that is the biggest & most expensive initial problem standing in a lot of people's way. 06.01.2022 VET VISIT Our wonderful vets were out this week, to geld our last five stallions and also do the surgery to remove our little Queensland Brumby, Felicities eye.... We are pretty used to the geldings by now, but the eye op was pretty confronting - as much because we just adore Felicity and her fighting spirit so much. Felicity really resisted the anaesthetic, which wasn't helped by her foal Clover calling for Mum. She did go down and the surgery went quickly, with Felicity back in with her baby within about twenty minutes. Her eye was removed as well as the eyelids and the hole stitched together to heal. We were warmed to expect blood and swelling, keep her warm and she was put on five days of pain relief and antibiotics. Young Clover hasn't been handled as yet as out focus has been on preparing Felicity for her surgery. She is super wooly and we hadn't realised that under all that wool, she had developed a significant skin condition! Clover is also on 5 days of antibiotics to treat her skin infection, which is a pretty unfortunate introduction to handling, but she is taking it with her regular sass! All the boys recovered really well and have been turned out into a hilly paddock to keep moving and out of the mud! Todays terrible weather has meant that we had to move Felicity and Clover into the stable to keep warm and dry - Felicity wasn't super keen initially, but has settled in well! See more
06.01.2022 With Parks pushing for rehomers for KNP and people subsequently wanting to take these on . Please please please get trapping certificate / capture certificate .... This will provide authenticity of being Brumby , not only will This be required should new owners want to show their Brumby in the future but will also keep the standard of authenticity . Please also take the time to send DNA samples to those groups collating the data( simply pull hair from mane ensuring the root ball is attached ) and send it in. I admire everyone stepping up but it’s times like this with so many brumbies being rehomed and unknown people offering to rehome that I really wish we had a national data base of ALL brumbies so we can track their journey and ensure their future is safeguarded, it’s a very emotive subject I know but I fear that once emotions wear off some of these brumbies may end up with the same fate before being rehomed . Please consider microchipping and registering any acquired brumbies, this will at least allow a small degree of safety. See more

01.01.2022 I just posted this on Matt Keans Facebook page. The driving force behind the eradication of brumbies in Alpine areas is to ‘protect the fragile environment fr...om the impact of large, hard hoofed grazing animals.' Meanwhile plans are underway to construct a highly destructive Hydro-electric power station in the very same areas that are supposed to be highly vulnerable and important. Why do supposedly highly intelligent ecologists honestly believe that culling a handful of brumbies is going to save the Alpine environment when climate change, hydro electric power stations, ski resorts and increasing human intervention and activity in the area is continuing at an alarming rate? For God's sake, why don't they all focus on the true problems instead of desperately picking at scabs in the hope it makes them look like they are earning their Government subsidised wage. Shouldn’t our scientific community, environmentalists and ecologists be vehemently opposed to these schemes and activities? Who is fighting to stop these acts of Environmental Terrorism? Who is exposing the immense damage these schemes cause and why are we not investing in studies to inform the public of this. I expect the same people who are fighting for the lives of our Brumbies will have to. Shouldn’t we be investing in (and exposing) the extensive research which highlights the immense damage these schemes create and informing the public as such?
