22.01.2022 *** OBK Thought if the Week *** "How far that little candle throws its beams! So shines a good deed in a weary world" - William Shakespeare Last night was the eighth night of Hannukah, and a small but spirited group of people lit the Channukiah at OBK and made challah. While the group took in the delicious aroma of warm challah from the oven, Orna Triguboff and her accompanist Nadav led a musical meditation session full of gratitude; focusing on one's inner and outer light. ... The evening concluded with each participants taking home two challahs for Shabbat, and extra to give to someone else. It has been said that last night's dough was so light and easy to work with, and it produced particularly soft challah - so Kol Hakavod to George and Joe for that! Have a great weekend and Shabbat Shalom!

21.01.2022 Happy Monday We're at the Hannukah-Halfway point, so there's still plenty of time to experiment with your latkes! Cheesy sweet potato latkes might be the option that you try this week - no doubt there will be plenty of voluntary taste testers in your family!

21.01.2022 This week's Bondi Social Cooking School class with Chef Joe was in for a treat. Special guest Nisha guided the team with a traditional Punjabi-Chole chickpea curry and Aloo Paratha from scratch. It was an absolute hit - not only were over 200 meals made for the homeless, funds were raised for the lovely four legged furry friends at Labrador Rescue. Well done all!

19.01.2022 In this picture we see the Lubavitcher Rebbe (of blessed memory) gazing deeply into the eyes of a young boy. The Rebbe is fully present and focused on the child, as both a sergeant inspecting his soldier and a father full of joy and pride, enamoured by his son. He gazes into his soul, seeing the great potential and purpose of this young boy. The Lubavitcher Rebbe inspired the then young boy to emulate the Rebbe’s deep love and care for another individual. To be fully present... for another human in their joy and in their pain. To embrace their brokenness and celebrate their achievements. To see the great potential that each and every one of us posseses. With our deep gratitude to Hashem, we thank him for his kindness. For filling our lives with the young boy who has grown into a loving and caring son, spouse and father. A lover of humanity. A pillar of support for our community. A visionary. A man who so deeply appreciates the uniqueness of every human being and their intrinsic value. A man we all know very well. A man who has and continues to create a space for us all to manifest the promises that we have made to ourselves and humanity, our divine purpose. On the auspicious day of a birthday we ask that Hashem continues to give our very dear Rabbi Dr. Slavin the strength to persevere in his holy work, and to have only revealed goodness for the many happy and healthy years to come! No gift could be as treasured as gifting our dear Rabbi with accepting a resolution to do a good deed for another.

BYO ingredients, or pick up complimentary ready-mad...e dough from Grandma Moses Bakery & Cafe. Registration is free here: bit.ly/challah-bake-sydney We hope to see you there!

16.01.2022 Today in Cookie Fashion: Spring colours are very much on-trend!

16.01.2022 This week OBK pays tribute to the most dignified, joyful and regal woman who recently passed. A true "Eshet Chayil" - woman of valour - Mrs Serena Vesely. We all feel so honoured and blessed to have known Mrs Vesely as she conducted herself as caring and proud mother to all in OBK. When she noticed a missing button or a loose hem, she was quick to offer to mend it. Appearance was important to her, and she was always well dressed. As Mrs Vesely rolled hand made gnocchi, braid...ed challah and shaped cinnamon cookies with her effervescent smile, she nourished the souls of all around her, no matter what age or background. Mrs Vesely imbued true joy and happiness, and one could never have comprehended the pain and hardships she endured During WWII. She truly embodied the spirit of being a survivor and never defined herself as a victim. A beacon of hope - a woman who moved on and grew from humanity’s darkest days. Mrs Vesely personified generosity in the way she gave and cared for all she came in contact with, always with a smile and always with a kind and uplifting word. Rest in peace lovely lady, your name and memory will always be for a blessing

15.01.2022 A beautiful message to her band of volunteers, from Laya in Jerusalem! Stay tuned for more tomorrow

13.01.2022 Rabbi Slavin found himself in a bit of a pickle recently, after blessing and tasting Adamama Farm's delicious cucumbers at OBK: should he stop at one, or eat a second "just to be sure"? Lovingly grown at Adamama Urban Farm in Paddington, these cucumbers have been pickled and bottled at OBK, and are finally ready for sale at the source! Order a jar of Alma St Pickles online (link below), pick up directly from the source and support a local community initiative!... https://www.shalom.edu.au/event/alma-st-pickles/ See more

11.01.2022 Happy Monday! We are looking forward to observing celebrating Rosh Hashana this weekend - Jewish New Year - and hope we are all blessed with only good things in the coming year. Jewish holidays are often seen by others to be either 'feasting' or 'fasting' days - so for the curious ones out there, it is definitely a time to wear your 'Elasticised Finest' for a feast of symbolism! One of most common symbolic foods are apples dipped in honey, reminding us that we should have a sweet year. With that in mind, here is an interesting apple cake recipe that you might like to try.

11.01.2022 We are so often blown away by the generosity of the community. Our humble thanks go to Commonwealth Bank for their grant, so that we are able to continue to meet the increasing demand for fresh meals to those who need it. We were also privileged to join up with Hasbro these holidays, who have lit up the lives of many at the Sydney Children's Hospital, Randwick with their toy donations!

11.01.2022 *** OBK Thought of the Week *** "Individually we are one drop. Together, we are an ocean" With the gradual easing of restrictions in our fine state, we have welcomed back some wonderful corporate and social groups. Pictured here are staff from Partners Group who recently spent a Friday morning cooking over 300 meals, and packaging other food items. These groups are critical as they assist us in making and distributing even more meals to so many organisations in need. Our fre...ezers empty quickly each week, so we cannot thank these volunteers enough for their contribution. If your social or corporate group would be interested in giving people a 'hand-up', rather than a 'hand-out', come and talk to us - we'd love to host you! Have a great weekend and Shabbat Shalom!

08.01.2022 Happy Monday! There is no particular recipe we are spruiking today ... we are just super-impressed with such precise cutting skills!!

08.01.2022 Yummmm...this is what we mean when we say "eat all the colours"!

08.01.2022 Happy Monday! We hope you enjoy your week We're starting ours off with fun food hacks. What is your favourite time saving trick?

08.01.2022 What is coming out of the kitchen nowadays? Lots of colour, creativity, and Covid-safe meals!

07.01.2022 Any man can be a father, but it takes a special person to be a dad. Happy Fathers Day to all the dads, grandads, papas, zaidys, opas, dedushkas, and all father figures in between and beyond! ...and we thank you and the mums for giving these beautiful children life so they may grow and enrich the lives of others ... Our annual honey biscuit bake has been more restrained this year, but we were thrilled for individual school groups to come in and prepare goodie bags and notes for our hospital workers and aged care homes. This group is from Moriah College!

07.01.2022 Happy Monday (what is left of it!) While OBK was closed over Rosh Hashana, the team made sure that over 800 traditional sweet round Challahs were made and distributed to those were able to join us at the Shule. They in turn shared them with their loved ones. Why are these shaped round for Jewish New Year? It is said to symbolise eternal life, or the cyclical nature of life. Oftentimes they are shaped like a spiral moving up, in the hope that the changes we make in life each year are positive and meaningful, thus elevating us spiritually.

07.01.2022 *** OBK Thought of the Week *** "Our spirituality is a oneness and an interconnectedness with all that lives and breathes, even with all that does not live or breathe" - Mudrooroo Following the 1938 pogrom in Germany known as Kristallnacht, an Australian Aboriginal elder of the Yorta Yorta nation known as William Cooper led a delegation to the German consulate in Melbourne, to deliver a petition condemning the cruel persecution of Jews in Germany.... Cooper's actions were one of the very few private protests known in Australia and his was especially poignant. Here was a man who - despite his own rights being severely restricted - could not remain silent on the suffering of others. This week, events around the country are being held as part of NAIDOC Week - a celebration of the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. It is therefore fitting that we continue to express our gratitude to William Cooper and his peers. May NAIDOC Week continue to educate, inspire and open up many more paths of interconnectedness. Have a great weekend and Shabbat Shalom!

06.01.2022 *** 2020 is a year we will all remember! *** For us at OBK, it will be remembered as the year we went from our bushfire response - perhaps the busiest time we ever had in OBK - to COVID19 when OBK was very empty. Over the last few months, we were operating with skeleton staff in order to conform to NSW social distancing rules, yet at the same time being asked to increase our output. With your help, we rose to the challenge so Australians would know we were here in any circums...tance, and that nobody should ever be alone, or feel alone.... and we will continue doing this in 2021. To you - our dear volunteers - we say thank you for being you, for being ready to come and give a hand at anytime and respond to the need. To our generous supporters, we are grateful for all that you do, that you keep us in your thoughts and are able to spread the word about OBK. We will be closing tomorrow and will reopen on Tuesday 5 January. Events for 2 weeks from the 5th January will be up on our website soon and we will be taking volunteers from the age of 17 to 67. Wishing You Good Health and Joy. Laya, Rabbi Dr Dovid Slavin and The OBK Team

06.01.2022 We wish our recent volunteer Carlos safe travels, as this special sailor will be deployed by the Navy. Rabbi Slavin made sure Carlos had a month's supply of OBK biscuits for his time at sea

05.01.2022 The world lost Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks, theologian, writer, speaker and former Chief Rabbi of the Commonwealth. May his name always be a blessing. Rabbi Sacks believed that science and religion were similar to the twin hemispheres of the brain - Science breaks things down to find out how they work, and Religion joins them together to find out what they mean. His teachings on morality were inspirational to people from all walks of life, and he has a special place in OBK's heart. Here is a video explaining why.

05.01.2022 *** Lest We Forget *** Today OBK honours the brave members of the armed forces who have served and died in the line of duty. To the descendants of these souls we express our gratitude for their service so many years ago and say:... "They shall not grow old, as we that are weary grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them"

05.01.2022 Following the resounding success of last week's pasta making classes, Joe and Danni are back with a few tickets left to this Sunday's session! Learn a new skill while preparing much needed meals at OBK for those living on the street. You really will be making a difference. https://www.facebook.com/117101190078104/posts/146448270476729/

03.01.2022 Happy Monday! We are excited to hear that the NSW borders have re-opened to our friends in Victoria and beyond, and we welcome them back with open arms. There are plenty of ways to celebrate in COVID-safe conditions, and perhaps plan some celebratory meals with this inspiring 'Avo-Art'!

02.01.2022 *** OBK Thought of the Week *** "Plant seeds of happiness, hope, success, and love; it will all come back to you in abundance. This is the law of nature." - Steve Maraboli Shana Tova from the team at OBK
