24.01.2022 Show us your skills! It's week two of #TakeCareStHelens and you're in for a right old treat! Our fav lady in Pink Kitty O'Shea is here to tell us how she conquered her fear of the internet to bring us I Heart Thursdays digitally during lockdown. What talent or skill did you master whilst being stuck at home? It can be anything from making gourmet grub to learning to handstand! Tag us in your pics St Helens and look out for a challenge each week in @sthelensstar

23.01.2022 If the last 6 months has taught us anything it's that it's cool to be kind! So that's what this week's #TakeCareStHelens is all about Pick up a copy of this awesome graphic poster (designed by St Helens artist @KateHodgsonUK and a group of young care leavers) in @StHelensStar and spread the love. Stick it up in your window, post it through your neighbour’s letter box or send it to a friend! The design has been inspired by a series of creative workshops Kate delivered with yo...ung women living in St Helens during February and March, just before lockdown happened. It went on to inspire a tote bag - but more on that tomorrow. We'd love to see what you did with your poster. And if you can't get a paper copy, you could spread the kindness by sharing this post instead... See more

22.01.2022 This week's #TakeCareStHelens takes inspiration from artist Rudy Loewe’s beautiful illustration for Heart of Glass’ Care Compendium (Chapter 1 if you want to check it out again ) and printed in today's edition of @sthelensstar - especially for y'all! As Rudy explains I wanted to create an image that reminds people how much power there is in taking care of one another" We need this more than ever right now, right? Let's carry on that thinking and celebrate how communitie...s have come together during lockdown and beyond. What projects, organisations or pop ups have you seen or been involved with in your 'hood? https://buff.ly/35x2r6F

22.01.2022 Be Part Of The Faculty North! Calling all Northern artists and creative practitioners: The Faculty North is now open for applications. This online programme will offer an alternative learning space for exchange, growth and exploration within the field of Social Art Practice. Led by the amazing Chrissie Tiller (Power Up) and the fantastic Kerry Morrison (In-Situ) this programme has 20 places available, each with a 500 bursary.... Due to inequalities within the arts sector, we are prioritising applications from people who experience racism; identify with coming from a disadvantaged background; disabled; those who experience learning difficulties; and LGBTQ. We will be making the selection based on supporting equally across communities and on the strength of your desire and commitment to be involved in the Faculty. The Faculty North is produced by In Situ and The Heart of Glass. The Faculty was originally developed as a partnership between four Creative People and Places InSitu, Super Slow Way, Leftcoast, CreativeScene and In Situ. It ran as a pilot in 2016 with 24 artists collaborating on weekend residentials in Pendle, Dewsbury, Blackpool and St Helens. https://buff.ly/3pdOTo3

21.01.2022 We live among these heroes, they are our friends, family and neighbours" Thanks to artist Emmer Winder @numbersixprints our third week of #TakeCareStHelens is about celebrating our heroes. During lockdown Emma created a whole range of stickers to celebrate individuals who were helping fight the pandemic and we thought it was such a brilliant idea we would get you involved too. So who do you want to shout about? From your mum to the postman, who helped put a smile on your face during lockdown? https://buff.ly/31v00PG

17.01.2022 We've a ten minute slice of Indulgent Memory pie for you. Head over to our website to watch Amy Pennington's new video work '4:3' for FREE. Before HD, 4:3 was standard TV ratio. Growing up queer in the 1990s, under Section 28* and in a small northern town, it was Amy’s ratio a limited square portal into a queer education. From Willow and Tara in Buffy to Ellen (coming out) on Oprah, TV’s few queer characters were sought out by a young Amy - to be watched and studied.... "Did I fancy them or did I just want to be them? Like Lacan’s mirror stage, where children look for their likeness in things, but the mirror and stage have gone a bit bent." In 4:3, Amy explores re-performance as a form of remembering TV's naff, but precious moments. https://buff.ly/37jrlHH

11.01.2022 Episode Nine is of The Mic Drop here. This week Mo will be chatting with Many Hands One Heart member Jansie. Jansie shares her experience of coming to the UK and navigating the asylum system, providing an insight into the stress and strain of the asylum process and highlights the importance of groups such as Many Hands One Heart and the support they provide. Listen to learn about the asylum system in the UK if you are not familiar with it and explore the work of organisations... and initiatives like Right To Remain and These Walls Must Fall. https://buff.ly/3mv8EGh The Mic Drop is a collaboration between the members of Many Hands One Heart and the artist, @larryachiampong. This podcast has been created for the sole purpose of making a space ‘for migrants by migrants’ exercising agency and exchange through a shared space of collective thinking, storytelling and debate.

10.01.2022 Oh my goodness, we've only gone and brought you ANOTHER early Christmas present! This week, nestled amongst the pages of St Helens Star, is a gorgeous artwork designed by artist Sophie Mahon, inspired by young people in St Helens. Accompanying this artwork is a guide to make your very own artwork: a stained-glass window out of paper, coloured with felt-tip pens and brought to life with vegetable oil! IKR - totally amazing! Sophie has created this artwork in response to the th...oughts, voices and opinions of 6000 young people gathered by a consultation Heart of Glass carried out as part of an earlier project with St Helens Council. In the new year Sophie will be continuing to work with Heart of Glass and will be developing a new project that explores working with young women across St Helens. Pick up the magic in this week's Star or visit our website for the digital version. https://buff.ly/3n2uUqQ

06.01.2022 Can or should art and its ‘weird magic’ change the world? Yes, no, maybe? Listen in on a cosy chat between artists Claire Weetman and Sheila Ghelani for Episode 3 as they reveal what they think of this slippery subject and what it means to be an artist working in a community setting during a global pandemic. Before they chatted (over Zoom), Sheila and Claire mailed out packages to each other (both artists had used care packages as a way to connect with their groups during th...e pandemic), so we listen as they unwrap these early Christmas gifts. (Shout out to the amazing volunteers and organisations who supported them through the process including St Helens Carers Centre and Refugee Women Connect ). 02.01.2022 Just in time for the holidays! In this week's issue of St Helens Star we’ve caught up with St Helens artist Kate Hodgson. She’s designed a wonderful poster that's both a gift and an invitation to contribute to her new project called PARRTY! PARRTY calls on the young women of Parr in St. Helens to contribute their opinions and dreams towards a series of zines*. These zines aim to amplify the voices, views and interests of young women living in and around Parr. They will includ...e everything from fashion to food, history to the future and everything else between! This is a collaborative and interactive project, which will take place in January. Kate would love to get as many young women from Parr involved as possible. We want to know more about what it’s like growing up in St.Helens. What would St Helens look like if designed by young women? How could we imagine the future of Parr and St Helens? You can find Kate's poster in the Star or on our website. If you would like to take part in PARRTY, add your ideas to the poster by writing, drawing or sticking pictures on it. Girls - tell us about your life in Parr! Tag us in your pictures on social media and use the hashtag #STHPARRTY *A zine is a DIY/ Self Published magazine https://buff.ly/3n2uUqQ

01.01.2022 A few days after the official COVID-19 lockdown began, Heart of Glass invited Associate Chrissie Tiller to become their temporary writer-in-residence: working together to explore ways to chronicle, and distil the learning, from the strange and disquieting crisis we were entering. Part of what emerged over this time were a set of reflections and resources by the collaborative and social arts sector - for the heart, body and mind. These resources and recommendations have been added to by attendees at the Create Ireland Networking Day 2020, whom we were delighted to partner with, to create a sense of collective wisdom, provocation and support by our field of practice at this time. https://www.create-ireland.ie//collaborative-arts-resourc/

01.01.2022 We're winding down and resting up for a few days and we hope you can too. What a year it has been! Thank you for all the ways you have been involved with Heart of Glass this year. We're looking forward to seeing you in 2021. Approaching the New Year with hope, we invite you to join us in exploration and creativity to seek out kinder, fairer futures Happy holidays folks... - the Heart of Glass team x
