18.01.2022 Today the HFH team ran a smoothie stall at the local Shepherdson College family open day in Galiwin'ku, hosted by the Cathy Freeman Foundation. It was great to see large numbers of children, and parents enjoying healthy smoothies made from fruits and green vegetables, coconut milk, greek yogurt and water, all available from the local ALPA store. Some Steering Committee members and adults in the community who have participated in HFH retreats gathered around discussing and sharing their healthy recipes and stories with other families. Many believed that healthy smoothies are a great way to introduce healthy foods to family members and start teaching children how good healthy foods can taste and fun to make.

13.01.2022 Yesterday members of the HFH Steering Committee met in Galiwin'ku and were joined by some elders in the community who were invited to attend as meeting observers to learn more about the program. 11.01.2022 The Hope For Health team celebrated National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children's Day, in Galiwin'ku yesterday. In collaboration with Shepherdson College Sunset School Program, the afternoon was spent with around 40 Yolngu children playing the popular game of Board-Board (a mix of AFL and Basketball). Our amazing local health coaches made ‘Half-Time, Healthy Smoothies’, with lots of encouragement and plenty of love for the children of Elcho Island.... This awesome event celebrated all things wonderful about our future Elders.

10.01.2022 This week the staff team have enjoyed discovering the use of our new slow cooker as a way to cook meat, creating a soft texture to the cooked meat and a way to produce easy meals for large families. Slow cooker recipes can be simply meat, salt and water or for more flavour, adding onion, garlic and other vegetables.

08.01.2022 Hunting for traditional foods is a vital way of life for Yolngu people, providing families with nutrient dense foods. This week’s hunting trip saw the local team and participants travel to Rogers Creek on Elcho Island, a well-known spot for gathering mud muscles and "bunybu". Local staff described the long walk, through bush and through mangroves and swamps, that was hard work and good exercise. They also enjoyed digging for bush food, mud muscles and "bunybu" and carrying that food was hard work. They encouraged participants to drink lots of water. Along the way, the group also came upon a tree with bees flying from it. It is the season for wild honey "Guku". The group smoked the tree to remove the bees, used an axe to cut into the tree to reveal the eggs and fresh honey, a real treat.

03.01.2022 HFH staff members explain that it is the season of Gunmul, the wet season. It is a great time for gathering maypal (shellfish), mud muscles, stingrays, fish and mud crabs. Collecting mud muscles is hard work, that requires digging elbow deep in mud to reach the muscle. The hard work is rewarded with a feast of mud muscles cooked with garlic and chillies are enjoyed by the family.
