07.01.2022 Queensland children are presenting with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), a dangerous complication of undiagnosed type 1 diabetes, at alarming rates. Jaxon Pearce is one of those children. By the time Jaxon’s diabetes was diagnosed, the 20-month-old was in DKA, his blood sugar levels had surged and acidic substances called ketones had built up to dangerous levels in his body. A finger-prick glucose test at the emergency department saved his life. This World Diabetes Day, we want you to know the four signs of type 1 diabetes toilet (frequent urination or bedwetting), thirsty (always asking for fluids), tired (adequate sleep but still tired) and thinner (losing weight). If your child has one or more of these symptoms urgently ask your GP for a finger-prick blood glucose test. It’s easy, fast and could save your child’s life.
