23.01.2022 -SOFTBALL EAGLES SPROUT WINGS By Robert Laidlaw IT TOOK A WHILE but West Torrens finally managed to win its first Premier League softball game this season, with a fighting 7-4 mid-week victory over Walkerville.... And it wasn’t until the last inning when the Eagles pulled off the win, as an early lead was extinguished by a determined Walkies. West Torrens opened with three runs in the bottom of the first inning, on RBI hits to Sophie Hoyle and Steph Trzcinski, plus a pair of errors. The Cats pulled one back at the top of the second, when Ashley Luppino doubled and scored on Bianca Ramsey’s RBI infield hit. But the yellow and blues answered in the bottom of the dig, when Jacqui Beal tripled and scored on Jordan Lambert’s sac fly. It looked like the game was about to be turned on its head at the top of the fourth when Walkerville mounted a challenge, scoring three runs to tie, after Riley Moore doubled, Chelsea Robinson singled, two walks and Sophie Roberts’ two-out, two-run single. But the Eagles would not be denied, as Faith Pickard singled home a run and Trzcinski plated two with her hit to rightfield in the bottom of the dig, to ensure that first win for West Torrens. IT LOOKED LIKE PORT ADELAIDE by how much after two innings of the Magpies game against Hills, but it ended up a 5-5 draw after the Heat fought back. Both sides scored a run in the opening frame, Port’s highlight was Johanna Grauer’s double, while for Hills, Georgia Hood had a RBI hit. Then in the second inning the Magpies scored three runs, two from Kara Tilton’s smash through second base and the third courtesy of a wild pitch, for a 4-1 lead. A walk, Georgia Hood’s double, an Alex Mackay triple and Peyton Daniel’s double saw three runs cross the plate for the Heat at the top of the third, and all of a sudden it was 4-4. The Magpies inched ahead in the bottom of the third when Charlize Callaghan tripled and scored on an error, but Hills managed a single run in the final frame when, after two, two-out walks, an error levelled proceedings. It wasn’t finished just yet, as Port still had to bat in the bottom of the fourth dig. The Magpies had two on after hits to Grauer and Taylor Chillingworth, but both runners were stranded when the game’s final out was made. * * * * * RESULTS: Premier League softball results: Port Adelaide tied Hills 5-5 (hits: Port Grauer 2, Chillingworth, Callaghan; Neves; Hills G. Hood 2, Mackay, Daniels). West Torrens d Walkerville 7-4 (hits: WT Trzcinski 2, Schulz, Kaesler, Pickard, Hoyle, Beal, Fuss; Walkerville Luppino 2, Robinson, King, Roberts, Gray, Moore, Ramsey. 15.01.2022 -BASEBALL: SAINTS GET THE JOB DONE By Robert Laidlaw IT WASN’T BIG HITTING that won the day for Sturt in its 10-0 victory over Southern Districts in division one baseball at Mitcham, but just a matter of getting the job done. 15.01.2022 - SOFTBALL - WHITE’S WINNING BLOW By Robert Laidlaw WITH TIME RUNNING OUT, two runners on base and trailing by a run, Sturt benefitted from Bel White’s two-run double in the bottom of the final inning to beat Seacombe 5-4, in an exciting mid-week A grade softball clash. It was a tense battle, with only one run scored in the first three innings by the Falcons, when White and Maddie Cameron hit back-to-back triples with none out. A line drive catch and double play by Seacomb...e’s Becky Havis at third base cut the rally short. The Tigers then took control of the game with a four-run push at the top of the fourth frame, after Jade Peterson singled and four walks to score three runs, with a fourth coming off a dropped catch in the outfield, but a close play at the plate on the same play ended the inning. A shell-shocked Sturt managed to close the gap to one with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth, on Neve Adams two-out, two-run hit. Millie Fidge had come into the circle with none out amid the Tigers’ big rally and managed to not only get the three outs, she also pitched out of trouble in the fifth and final dig after surrendering a lead-off double to Jess Maslin. Then, as the clock wound down, the Falcons made their match-winning charge, with Ada Caruana and Sarah Tonkin hitting one-out singles to set up White’s heroics. ALTHOUGH NOT AS DRAMATIC, Port Adelaide also relied on a last inning rally to beat West Torrens 6-1. The Magpies opened the scoring in the first frame with a single tally, after hits to Jess Neves, Johanna Grauer and Kara Tilton loaded the bases for Megan Williams’ sacrifice fly. A two-out, loaded bases, full count infield grounder by Sophie Hoyle scored West Torrens only run of the game in the bottom of the third inning, to level the scores at 1-1. Although regularly getting baserunners Port struggled to score, until the top of the fifth and final dig, with Kara Tilton’s two-run double plating the go-ahead runs, as the Magpies also added another three tallies to blow the scoreline out. Johanna Grauer returned from Queensland to control proceedings for Port, conceding just two hits while collecting six strikeouts from the circle. * * * * * RESULTS: A grade softball results: Sturt d Seacombe 5-4 (hits: Sturt White 3, Caruana, S.
