24.01.2022 People in the outback have had no reason to keep up with technology as it develops and becomes not just more user friendly, but increasingly, it becomes intelligent. The capacity to utilise technology is frequently talked about on television and occasionally on ABC Landline, but often the point is missed, where the technology being looked at can be set up to manage an individual's situation, rather than just be looked at as being "for the big guys with their overseas millions". At Outback InfoTech, we aim to make sense of the technology for those same landowners, and put together a single source solution.
21.01.2022 I've been researching the availability of a portable phone (not a mobile because we don't all have mobile coverage out here). "Landlines" out here are not always based on copper wires on poles. Many of our clients have their landline delivered by microwave and wireless. So what I have found so far is a unit which has a site working at 13 kilometres from the base station. ... What I want to do is use the normal single line system on one of these units to test in our environment. Then I want to add what we call an IP line to it. An IP line is provided over the internet, and depending on how you want it to work in your environment, it can be set up in a way that you never miss an incoming call and you can make outgoing calls whilst the incoming line is in use. Remember here, that we now all have access to internet if we want it. That means the availability of a second number has improved. Depending on your environment how this would work for you. If your homestead is out of mobile range, you have really one major choice here up to now and that is satellite phones. The other part of that technology is a Satsleeve. The unit is cheaper than a satellite phone, but calls are still relatively expensive. I will add to this as I find out more details from the distributor.
19.01.2022 As the technology around which smart phones are built is developing we have the ability in the bush to put our products and services in front of buyers clients, both remote and local. A mate is currently developing a market for bush timber and he is able to use his smart phone to send pictures of what he is getting, directly to his customer. The advantage is that it the further feels what he is getting is too small he can say so, in real time and the harvest can be suspended or moved immediately.
15.01.2022 For some time now I've been playing with the thing called a new unit of computing, NUC for short. As you can see in the photograph that's the little silver and black thing at the bottom left side of the screen, it's much smaller than a notebook but can be set up with the same power as a desktop. That particular one is made by Intel, and is based on a low energy, low end CPU which has been around for years, which retails in the low hundreds of dollars, infamous people in an ag...ricultural environment will absolutely do most things that they want. The particular set up in the photograph is based on Linux 18. 04, which is reasonable speed, reasonable computing power and the whole thing including the monitor would be around about $700 complete. Most computer sales people will tell you that you need lots of storage space, lots of processing power, and absolute heaps of RAM. That unit has one terabyte of solid state storage with the capacity to add USB drives to the outside, can be hooked up to a printer quite easily, and since most things on farm now done online, it will cover most bases for the average farmer. it doesn't have the grunt of a $2, 000 machine or more, but it is appropriate to the needs of a farmer who requires a reliable reasonably priced machine to work with things like weighing systems, Animal Management and so on. If you're interested in looking at a new computer for your farming stuff probably makes a little bit of sense to talk to us here at the cafe and see if we can't come up with a solution between us.
14.01.2022 I've been thinking about the benefits of care packs from HP and others like that and I'm not convinced they are worth the money out here in the bush. Whatever the problem unless you do your own fault finding, the cost of a single service call is likely to be less than the care pack. Before you can make a claim you'll have several hours in the phone to Manila as they try and find a position wherein the issue is your fault and fails to be approved as a claim.... A failed hard drive for example, a relatively simple repair, will cost around $250-$300 got the drive and the recovery of the windows installation takes about 90 minutes. Do you'd be looking around a total of $500 to compete the job. Total Time without the unit, 3 to 4 days waiting for the drive to arrive from Brisbane.. The other point is backups. Windows have a pretty good process in the control panel on windows 10, but if you use Outlook as your mail client, you may well lose your data in that program. Depends on how important the data you have is to your continuing in business, your backups should be done daily. Weekly at absolute worst. Remember, while we can recover data, it takes a fair bit of time. Anyway people, enjoy your break if you get one. Merry Christmas from Bindi.
14.01.2022 I'm looking forward to my first house call since moving to Mungallala. It's a bit different to the short runs in Brisbane. This one is 100k North. Will I have everything I need in the car? Probably not. But let's see how it goes. News tomorrow night.
13.01.2022 Had a call recently about a slow notebook which is used to run a business. I downloaded, installed and ran CCleaner and cleared almost 40Gb of trash. That speeded it up a bit so then I ran the registry cleaner and found over a thousand issues. I ran the registry issues cleaner and did not save the registry. It is not necessary. At the end of the process the machine was still running hot at around 65 degrees. In a perfect world a laptop should run below 60. ... The temperature details are provided by Speccy, another product from the people at Piriform. By right clicking the task bar at the bottom of the screen you can find task manager. That will tell you what's running and how much memory is being used. The machine in question had an anti-virus program running over 80% of the CPU. I changed that, installing Avast Software which has a free version which for most people is sufficient. There is a paid version available as well. That again brought the temperature down a few degrees. I have now ordered a notebook cooler which will arrive in the next few days. That should fix the speed and the temperature.
07.01.2022 I was asked this morning to sort out an issue with a PC which had lost its data. This appears to have been caused by a change to the windows environment caused by the machine itself. The issue was the data was for a business, and all the MYOB backups were on the same machine and on the same disk. Backup is not a term of endearment. It is an instruction from anyone who knows IT. ... I don't mind helping people, but to quote several famous people, " The IT guy can do more if you have done a bit for yourself".
07.01.2022 A couple of people have been asking about long range cordless phone solutions for our in various properties. Engenius have a solution they are happy with to 10kms from the base. It needs to be line of sight but they have a solution when you have a hill in the middle, which appears to be a redirector. They have one site in Western Australia, where the phone is working at 14kms.... He's the link. http://www.wirelessly.com.au/product-/long-range-cordless/ If anyone wants some more detail and the price isn't a problem I'll do some more research. There was one other company has one they said would do the distance, they thought. I'm usually more comfortable with one that is already working somewhere.
