23.01.2022 http:// Friday Fact - The problem horse // There are a lot of elements to the creation of a 'problem horse', but the ones we see mostly are due to confusion. The exp...ression of confusion has all to do with how the animal copes with stress. In all animals, including humans, there are three basic coping mechanisms: Flight Fight Apathy Freeze is really part of flight, as it is an evolutionary defence mechanism to confuse its predator. Horses show their coping mechanisms when things don't make sense to them. We should not be oblivious to this and treat the horse as if it's deliberate bad behaviour. We often don't think enough about the complexity of what we are trying to achieve, and we often act as if the horse already knows what it is meant to do. We may be expecting university level behaviour when our horse is still in kindergarten. It is a matter of our expectations exceeding the horse's level of education. One signal should mean one response, and if that signal is ineffective or blurry, it can cause confusion. Imagine a two-year-old child trying to cope and learn in an adult world where simple words have double (or opposing) meanings.
