Body colour and patterns extremely variable: grey or brown to orange with spots and sometimes a dark stripe along the back from the head to the start of the tail. Males can be very brightly marked, including a blue throat, blue colour washed through the flanks and down the middle of the back and sometimes also bright yellow or orange on the top of the head and neck. 20.01.2022 A beautiful #whitewingedfairywren I photographed at #yanganationalpark a few days ago. I've been trying to get a descent shot for years. . Australia’s fairy-wrens have the reputation of being brightly coloured, and the White-winged Fairy-wren is one of the most striking. Males of the species are virtually entirely bright-cobalt blue, except for their wings, which are, as the name suggests, gleaming white. That is the case over most of the species’ range, which extends across... much of the inland regions of mainland Australia, as well as semi-arid coastlines. However, males on Barrow and Dirk Hartog Islands off north-western Australia, are not blue, but inky black with contrasting white wings. 06.01.2022 Murray River Turtle . . . .... Also known as the Macquarie turtle or Murray short-necked turtle, this turtle can grow to about 30cm in length. The male has a much fatter and longer tail than the female. There are two fleshy barbels under its chin. The shell is predominantly medium to dark brown above, cream coloured below. The skin is greyish and there is a distinctive creamy-yellow stripe running back along the side of the head from the corner of the mouth. The eyes are small and yellow with a round black pupil.
