25.01.2022 What’s the Story? It’s a Morning Glory one of the most amazing meteorological sights you can see, and the Gulf of Carpentaria is the only known location on the planet where they can be predicted and observed with regularity. Also known as a roll cloud, the Glory forms consistently but only in the early to mid-Spring, for a few months when the unique geography of the Gulf creates a collision of two sea breezes heading in opposite directions.... This eerie dawn phenomenon can be up to 1-2km in height, can span up to 1000km in length and rolls through the sky at the speeds of up to 60kms! The local Indigenous population refer to the unusual clouds as kangólgi and believe their arrival is a positive indicator there will be flourishing birdlife. Seen here rolling over Les Wilson Barramundi Discovery Centre in Karumba. #outbackqueensland #karumba #morningglory Carpentaria Shire Council #thisisqueensland #goodtogo Visit Queensland, Australia #holidayherethisyear

23.01.2022 Have you come across Banana? Visitors are always a little baffled by Bananas unusual name since there isnt a single banana tree in sight. A dun-coloured bullock is responsible for that. A favourite of local stockmen in the 1860s, Banana the bullock, so named for his yellowish colouring, would help herd wild cattle into holding yards. When Banana died, the gully was given the name in honour of his feats.... A replica of Banana proudly stands in the town, a warm reminder of his legacy to those pioneering days. #outbackqueensland #sandstonewonders Sandstone Wonders, Queensland, Australia #thisisqueensland #goodtogo Visit Queensland, Australia

21.01.2022 13 life-size bronze dinosaurs have arrived at Winton’s Australian Age of Dinosaurs. Digitally sculpted by palaeo-artist Travis Tischler, the bronze models, two of which are long-necked sauropod dinosaurs, were cast at a foundry in Thailand and took nearly a year to complete. The new dinosaurs were made using modern ‘lost-plastic’ technology that involves 3D printing of digital models in meltable plastic, instead of the ‘lost-wax’ method traditionally used in bronze casting. ... At 17m long and nearly 4m high, the largest sauropod was too big to fit in a standard open-top 40-foot-long container and had to be transported with its neck and tail removed. Other models include a 10m-long sub-adult sauropod, emu-sized ornithopod dinosaurs and chicken-sized carnivorous theropods. The dinosaurs will become part of the future March of the Titanosaurs exhibition, which is centred on a newly discovered 60m-long sauropod trackway currently being relocated from a creek bed on a property west of Winton. The trackway, which contains the best-preserved sauropod tracks in Australia, will be enclosed in a 900sqm solar-powered air-conditioned building at Dinosaur Canyon (due for completion by mid-2021). #outbackqueensland #experiencewinton Experience Winton #thisisqueensland #goodtogo Visit Queensland, Australia

11.01.2022 Step back in time where everyday early outback life is on display. The small but delightful Morven Historical Museum contains some fascinating memorabilia. A must see is the miniature replica pioneer township. Painstakingly recreated over 15 years, buildings that have long gone have been preserved. The attention to detail of the buildings and the early building techniques makes this display a unique outback attraction. The Museum also has a collection of Aboriginal grinding s...tones, stone axe heads, spears, coolamons and boomerangs. In the grounds there is the ‘tin hut’, built of flattened kerosene tins, which is a testament to outback ingenuity. Built as housing during the great depression of the 1930s, these huts were common homes for pensioners. With only a few remaining today, Morven is fortunate to have one on display. #outbackqueensland #morven #experiencecharleville Experience Charleville #thisisqueensland #goodtogo Visit Queensland, Australia #holidayherethisyear

10.01.2022 Did you know that the Royal Historical Society of Queensland, which runs the Commissariat Store, is also a trustee of the Dig Tree in south west Queensland? You are welcome to visit the Dig Tree Reserve and reminded to tread carefully at this remote and fragile site. The site was refurbished in 2020. The health of the three heritage-listed trees is now protected by a boardwalk and remedial work to the nearby creek bank. Discreet signage tells the site’s tragic story. Three-d...imensional replicas of all six blazes allow visitors to view the original messages carved in the trees. Some of the original blazes are still partly visible on the trees which can be viewed closely from the boardwalk. There is a conservation fee of $20 per vehicle or $60 per bus to visit the Dig Tree Reserve. 10.01.2022 At 9.50pm on the 5th of September 2014, at Angellala Creek Bridge approximately 30km south of Charleville on the Mitchell Highway, Australian transport history was made. A truck carrying 53 tonnes of ammonium nitrate caught fire, crashed and exploded at Angellala Creek. The blast radius was felt over 30km away and had Charleville locals thinking it was an earthquake. The force of the explosion injured eight people.... Today, the road bridge has been rebuilt, but signs of the explosion still remain, and the story is told through an interpretive area at the site. 09.01.2022 On 16 November 2020, Australia’s national airline, Qantas, will turn 100 and there is no better place to celebrate the centenary than at Qantas Founders Museum, Longreach, Queensland. The company, Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services (QANTAS) was registered on 16 November 1920 in Brisbane and is one of the longest running airlines in the world. The first Board Meeting was held in Winton on 10 February 1921 where the Board decided to move the airline’s main operat...ions to Longreach where the rail head was. The airline’s initial routes included the Outback Queensland towns of Charleville, Tambo, Longreach, Winton and Cloncurry. Qantas would operate from Longreach until 1930, when they moved their operations to Brisbane. To celebrate this incredible milestone, Qantas Founders Museum has planned a series of activities throughout the day including a morning tea with birthday cake, guided tours of the National Heritage Listed Qantas Hangar and a Curator Talk. Museum admission will be free all day and the Museum’s tours and experiences including the new Luminescent Longreach experience will operate as normal. Bookings are essential.
