16.01.2022 Trip through the Desert by Amee Dennis. Concertina Book. Amee Dennis is a self-taught sustainable fibre artist, hand papermaker and designer. -- During December ‘18 & January ’19 I had the opportunity to spend 6 weeks in a studio/gallery in Bangalore, India. My original proposal to Asialink (the program I was funded though with the NT Government) was to build a body of work around my experience of going from the remote Australian outback to a hugely populated city and the co...ntrast of that. The more I thought about it, the more I realised that you can’t only look at the differences, you need to also what makes it similar or find a way to truly connect to your new place in order to see what’s really there. This concertina book came from trying to constantly explain the place I come from - the true red heart of Australia - the place where you have to constantly watch your feet when walking through the desert landscape or you miss the textures, the flora and finding the tracks left behind from the animals you rarely see. The intricate detail that you can only see when looking up close, but then also considering how it all looks from above and how all the small things come together to make one. A Trip through the Desert combines the beautiful cotton paper I was working with in India, Curtin Springs Paper that I took with me from home, aerial photographs of the region and sketching of the detail - bringing to life the memory, feel and warmth of home. This artwork is part of the Outback Way Outdoor Gallery which showcases art in the picturesque desert landscape of the Eastern MacDonnell Ranges in Central Australia. This project features 28 works by 27 artists from along the Outback Way, on large scale billboards, and also incorporates two mobile hotspots to boost mobile signals. 13.01.2022 The #australianoutback is a large, sparsely inhabited area with an extraordinarily beautiful and varied landscape. The plants and animals that have evolved to survive and thrive in the arid inland are diverse, sometimes colourful and showy, and sometimes drab and camouflaged. They are all hearty survivors of harsh conditions such as intense heat, lack of moisture and infertile soil. Pictured: A beautiful flock of galahs taking flight.
