25.01.2022 Murray Cod released back into the Darling River More than 60,000 Murray Cod have been released back into the Darling River near Menindee on 7 December, two years after severe drought triggered fish deaths. These restocked Murray Cod were the offspring of fish rescued by DPI Fisheries with the help of community groups in the sweltering summer of 2019. The rescued Murray Cod were taken to the NSW Government’s fish hatchery at Narrandera, where they have stayed until conditions ...improved. These fish releases are a major milestone in the NSW Government’s $10 million Fish Rescue Strategy. Premier Gladys Berejiklian joined Minister for Agriculture and Minister for Western NSW Adam Marshall at Menindee to oversee the restocking event. A further 50,000 Murray cod fingerlings were also released into the Macquarie River on 15 December. These fish are the offspring of adult cod rescued from the Macquarie last year, which were relocated from severely drought-affected sections of the river, in a joint operation involving local landholders, Inland Waterways Ozfish, DPI Fisheries and other community groups. The previous native fish rescues and current restocking efforts are a great example of the fishing community and DPI Fisheries working together for the benefit of our native fisheries.

07.01.2022 The new year will bring some new rules for fishing at Lake Hume! Victoria’s taking the first steps toward reciprocal licences along the border with NSW, with... a 12-month trial at Lake Hume beginning on 1 January, 2021. From 1 January 2021, fishers who hold a NSW fishing licence won’t need a Victorian licence to wet a line at Lake Hume, which is managed as a solely Victorian fishery. We’ve stocked more than 2.6 million trout, yellas, silver perch and Murray cod into Lake Hume over the past 10 years to create a wonderful mixed fishery that provides great freshwater opportunities year-round. This year-long trial reduces red tape on border communities by reducing the need for some residents to have 2 separate licences to fish at Lake Hume. The trial is supported by VRFish and the Futurefish Foundation as well as the Cross-Border Commissioner, the Victorian recreational fishing grants working group and Victorian Fisheries Officers. It’s hoped that in the future, NSW will accept a Victorian fishing licence for Lake Mulwala and eventually the entire Murray River.
