Once I gave myself PERMISSION to have those things for myself - it happened. There's nothing more powerful than providing yourself with free thought and genuine ability to question what is going on around you. 09.01.2022 My PTSD is not something I talk about alot - because it’s painful...until those times when it’s too hard to avoid...you’ll sometimes find flavours of it laced through my language, but it’s a demon I try to keep locked away for the most part. Although my career in the police was rich, exciting and colourful, the darker side of this was that too much of my own self was sold and left ‘me’ behind, meaning my experience of the world is distorted. It was a devastating realisation ...and something that I only have the courage to talk about sometimes. 13 years on from needing to resign from the job I loved and I’m still faced with regular reminders of the uncertainty of who I am and who and what the world really is. Much like an old movie playing out constantly in my brain...It still pokes at me on a fairly regular basis. This comes through me by being hyper vigilant about things, dealing with my daily thoughts of horror, and leads me to question my decisions on a nearly constant basis. With help, I’ve come to read the signs and know what’s linked to old thoughts, and how to clear my mind to concentrate on what’s real, and now. I’m really thankful that I’ve had such great careers in a variety of sectors since leaving and I continue to move forward positively with the same purpose - to help others. PTSD and mental health touches a lot of people. ALOT. There are lots of reasons and manifestations that some will be open about, and some will not. That’s the nature of the beast. I’ve hid my pain for a lot of years and trudged on thinking if I keep moving forward and ignoring it chasing me, it will disappear, but it doesn’t... As RU Okay day approaches I’m reminded to not only ask others, but also ask myself.
