18.01.2022 NAIDOC Week has begun! But what exactly is NAIDOC? NAIDOC is a week dedicated to celebrating the history, culture and achievement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This year we reflect on the theme of Always Was, Always Will Be. This theme recognises that First Nations peoples have been here and caring for our country for over 65,000 years. So how can you get involved? Whether you’re interested in art, music, stories or connection to land, there are online events for everyone. Simply click the link to the NAIDOC website and check out their Victorian and national program: https://www.naidoc.org.au/get-involved/naidoc-week-events

16.01.2022 During NAIDOC Week NITV News has highlighted an Aboriginal-led midwifery service making waves in its community. This innovative service is changing the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander mothers and their babies in Queensland. Mothers using the service are 19 times more likely to attend antenatal visits, and since January the service has not had to admit any babies to the neo-natal intensive care unit which saved over $1.5 million for the health service. Learn more about how these midwives are supporting their community below
15.01.2022 Today NAIDOC comes to a close but we can still support and learn about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, culture and achievements beyond this special week. Museums Victoria has curated a broad range of online resources and have current and upcoming content for all ages. Learn more via their website: https://museumsvictoria.com.au/naidoc/
14.01.2022 Have you ever considered how a lack of access to technology can contribute to inequality? This year's World Day of Social Justice is focusing on just that. We experienced this firsthand when our asylum seeker health services pivoted to telehealth delivery at the start of the pandemic. Many people seeking asylum do not have smartphones or enough data to enable a telehealth consultation. Fortunately we have some amazing partners such as Whittlesea Community Connections who ha...ve been able provide people seeking asylum with access to phones or laptops so they can attend telehealth appointments or continue working or learning from home through Government and private funding. Regardless of visa status, no one should miss out on health care. To find out more about digital inequality visit: https://www.un.org/en/observances/social-justice-day
13.01.2022 Did you know Netflix, ABC, SBS and Facebook are all partnering with NAIDOC this year? They are using their platforms to bring you some of the best stories and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. How can you join the celebrations? Just jump onto whatever platform you use with the family and take some time to watch Indigenous based content. Your support and interest helps to highlight that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices and their stories matter. Check out some content curated by NAIDOC here: https://www.naidoc.org.au//netflix-partnership-highlights-
11.01.2022 In a wide world of cultures and peoples’, the need to foster mutual understanding and tolerance is growing. On International Day for Tolerance we reflect on our own moral duty to ensure equality in the treatment of others. The UN state that tolerance is respect and appreciation of the rich variety of our world's cultures, our forms of expression and ways of being human and that fostering tolerance leads to a more peaceful, respectful place with less violence. Since the recent Feast of our foundress Mother Cabrini Patron Saint of Immigrants, we are reminded about embracing one another to create more equitable and peaceful communities particularly within our own communities seeking asylum and refuge. To learn more about combatting intolerance read more below via the UN website
09.01.2022 Abbad* is in one of more than 50 families supported by our Pharmacy Waiver program, which provides essential medicines to people seeking asylum.. Abbad’s two children both have special needs and one suffers from asthma. Without the Pharmacy Waiver program, Abbad’s children would be left untreated. At Cabrini Outreach we believe health inequities such as these unfairly impact vulnerable communities. Read more about how we support families like Abbad’s here: http://bit.ly/3tY...aAuu *Name changed to protect identity
06.01.2022 In Australia we are lucky to be able to access healthcare through our public system. However some groups within our community, such as First Nations Peoples, people seeking asylum, other communities who are culturally and linguistically diverse and those experiencing entrenched poverty, have less access to quality health care than the majority of Australians. At Cabrini Outreach we want all people, regardless of postcode, visa status, age or income, to have access to primary healthcare and mental wellbeing support. This includes people seeking asylum who are ineligible for Medicare. You can learn more about what we have been doing over the last year by having a look at our annual report here: https://www.cabrinioutreach.com.au//Cabrini-Outreach-Annua
05.01.2022 Dr Suresh Sundram reflects on how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected access to healthcare and specifically its impact on the mental health of people seeking asylum. It becomes a forced financial choice for what is prioritised, where food and shelter often override health needs. We believe Australia should uphold its obligations to provide appropriate medical care to people seeking asylum and refugees, regardless of citizenship, visa status, or ability to pay. To read more from Dr Suresh Sundram visit our news page: https://www.cabrinioutreach.com.au//the-importance-of-men/
