25.01.2022 Dear Paddling Family The Zone committee met earlier this afternoon to discuss the impact of COVID-19 on our regatta program and the social distancing strategy ...being espoused by many health experts including the WHO, the Australian Government and our own National Body AOCRA. It is our intention to follow our national body AOCRA's stance by implementing the same distancing strategy being employed by many sporting organisations across Australia. That means any activity that requires travel, events or meet ups being held over the next 30 days will be postponed or where necessary cancelled. To this end we are declaring the following: * In consultation with Tweed Coast OCC the SQZ OC6 - Race 2 scheduled for 28/29 March is cancelled. We are discussing the likelihood of hosting a regatta in the near future and thank them for their understanding in this current climate. * In consultation with Gold Coast OCC, the scheduled SZQ OC6 Race 3 on 18 April has been postponed until further notice. * A decision has not been made on the Fraser Coast OCC regatta at this stage until we have spoken to the Fraser Coast team. We appreciate that this is a complex issue and we thank you in advance for your cooperation and patience. Our goal is to continue to monitor the situation, follow expert advice and take the appropriate action accordingly. We will endeavour to update you as soon as new or different information becomes available to us. As always, please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns. Yours in paddling SQ Zone Team #inthezone #keepingyouinformed #seeyouonthewater
25.01.2022 SAVE THE DATE... *** QLD’s Stage 3 allows racing/competing again*** Reset Regatta 1 of 2 ... Sat 1 August 2020 7am start Raby Bay Foreshore Park, Masthead Drive, Cleveland 12U and up are invited to race All day racing for one price: $20 adults, and $10 juniors OC1/2, V1 and OC6 racing. Dear SQZ paddling community, its families and friends, and wider network. Regattas are back...who's in? To test the viability of running regattas in a COVID climate, SQ Zone has created two regattas we’re calling RESET because while we do our best to have fun and participate, we will be testing out COVID systems and processes within an OC regatta setting as well. The first RESET will play out on Sat 1 August. The SQZ team will host it with the help of a local OCC which will be Bayside Outrigger Canoe Club Inc. Bayside will also run a food tent, and the local resident SUP school, will run a coffee van. COVID signs, sign-ins, COVID Safe Coordinators, entries and exits, zoned off racing areas, online debriefs, clubs doing their own scrutineering, le mans finishes, canoe wipe downs, food tent masks and gloves will all be new features to test out at the RESET regattas. Our future will be 'COVID Safe Regattas’ as our ‘new norm’. Please be advised that the registration portal is not open yet and the program is still receiving its final touch ups. We plan to post the registration link on this page soon. A note to our SQZ NSW clubs, and their paddlers. To race on QLD’s side of the border, please opt-in to the QLD Approved Industry Plan. This action will cover your club and your paddlers. Several emails, and last week’s SQZ club-wide Zoom explained the approval process. Please contact Dave Mason on m: 0421 171 502 to know more. #inthezone #stage3COVIDsafety #seeyoubackonthewaterSQZ

22.01.2022 To our Paddling Family We appreciate members are seeking advice on what the Zone is doing re the Governments stages 1-3 COVID-19 plan. We are currently awaiting... further advice and clarification from the Queensland Government via QSports this Thursday to see how we can safely get back to it with the right measures and COVID-19 Safety plans. This allows us to provide our Clubs and paddlers with better information in order to make better informed decisions. Like you we are all keen to get back to paddling both training and racing but lets do it knowing we are taking all the necessary precautions to ensure everyones safety and well being. Hang on in there people, stay well, stay safe and THANKS for your ongoing patience. Regards Dave Mason South Qld Zone President 0421 171 502

20.01.2022 THE LATEST FOR COMMUNITY SPORTS RE QLD’S CURRENT MOVEMENT AND GATHERING RESTRICTIONS Dear SQZ paddling community. ... This message replaces all previous COVID updates that were posted on our SQZ Facebook page or emailed this weekend. The new information affects SQZ clubs based within QLD's borders; mainly the greater part of Brisbane and the identified 8 x local govt areas (LGAs). In a nutshell, here is our current situation: - we are still at Stage 3 - the Reset Regatta #2 at Noosa Sat 12 Sept 2020 is still going ahead at this stage, and - SQZ clubs that are opted-in to an approved Industry COVID-Safe Plan can continue their activities as normal for now. Outside of sporting activities, please apply the advice that was given regarding the new restrictions that came into effect yesterday morning as part of QGOV’s health directive. Details can be found here: https://www.qld.gov.au//public-health/movements-gatherings It is strongly encouraged that SQZ clubs operating within affected locations continue to adhere to requirements outlined within our Approved Industry Plans as well as keeping up to date with the health advice given. Just reiterating that our Approved Industry Plans restrict access to anyone who has: - COVID-19 or has been in direct contact with a known case of Covid-19 within the last 14 days - Flu-like symptoms or who is a high health risk (e.g. due to age or pre-existing conditions) - Travelled internationally, and/or - Travelled to a COVID declared hotspot. Please continue to stay COVID free and safe everyone. For the love of paddling. The SQZ Team #inthezone
20.01.2022 Great results for our OCCA at Noosa’s reset regatta yesterday across all age groups. Our new paddlers did an awesome job, but most of all our club spirit, good friendships and loyalty amongst the athletes made it a pleasure to be part of... WE ARE OUTRIGGER AUSTRALIA

19.01.2022 Launching the AOCRA Corona Cup Lets all gather online and put in the KMs to help inspire each other to stay paddle fit, connected and motivated. We've ...setup a Strava AOCRA club page so we can all upload our training KMs and stay connected. Strava is the worlds leading training app. With 46 million users. It has a great set of features to keep you training. Step 1 Download the Strava app on the App store, or click here https://apps.apple.com//strava-training-run-ri/id426826309 Step 2 Sign up to Strava at https://www.strava.com/ Step 3 Join the AOCRA club at https://www.strava.com/clubs/508402 Step 4 Your KMs will now automatically be listed on the AOCRA club page. NOTE - one limitation is you will need to put your paddle session in as a Swim so it shows up. As Strava clubs only include run, rides and swims. We thought a Swim is more applicable. PRO TIP If you are using Apple Watch then you can use the App HealthFit to then use the Native Workout App to automatically connect to Strava and upload your paddle. Remember to put it in as an Ocean Swim on the Apple Watch Workout App. Enjoy these paddling sessions and please send us your videos and best pics to inspire. Let’s also find more ways to stay connected during these tough time.
18.01.2022 Hello Paddlers, In light of recent government announcements, the Board would like to give you an update of where we are as an association with respect to our cu...rrent training and competition options. First of all, I continue to be amazed and immensely proud of how the community have embraced the challenges of these difficult times and the changes the environment. You have been incredibly responsive and compliant and the association has continued to run in spite of the disruptions. We had a strong start to the year during January to February, however this was followed by coming to a complete standstill during March, as the Level 3 restrictions came into play in Australia when we entered full lock down immediately. As restrictions start to ease we now prepare for training and competition to return to relatively normal levels again, and we are ready to take the steps needed when this happens. I have been in consultation with Sports Australia and other sporting bodies this past week to ensure a consistent approach is applied across sporting disciplines. Sports Australia have said that each sport is to develop their own guidelines and policy's around returning to training and competition which then aligns to the respective State government directives, which are set to vary. Whilst we will come out with a national guideline, I urge you all to be absolutely familiar with the messages of our respective State Governments and Zones around the current levels of restrictions and what is allowed and what is not. These are changing reasonably quickly now and things differ from state to state. There will be a final meeting this Thursday with other Paddle Sporting bodies, so by the end of the week, we will communicate new recommendations that align with the newly announced government timelines, which could see us transitioning back to normal training very soon (with restrictions). Competition will remain on hold until further notice (except virtually for OC1). If you are like me then I'm sure you are well and truly over staying in your bubble but it is the very thing that will keep us safe and more importantly not put others at risk through our actions. We will continue to update you as more information comes to hand. Please reach out to your Zone Committee if you have any questions or concerns. In the meantime please stay safe and if you have even mild covid like symptoms then please get tested. Stay safe, Katherine Cole President AOCRA

15.01.2022 QSPORT MEDIA RELEASE 15 MAY 2020 COMMUNITY SPORT TO SET UP FOR RESUMPTION NEXT MONTH. State sporting organisations are not expected to endorse or sanction their... local clubs and regional affiliates organising sporting activity, including training, this coming weekend under Stage 1 easing of COVID-19 restrictions outlined in the Queensland Roadmap released last Friday by Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk. Discussions in recent days between the major representative body for organised affiliated sport in Queensland and State Government sport and recreation agency and health authorities have confirmed commitment to the intensions of the Roadmap’s staged return to play for sport across the State. QSport, in its role as the peak body for the sport sector, yesterday briefed 70 member State sporting organisations’ delegates on the way forward towards the resumption of organised sporting activity when Stage 2 easing of restrictions kicks in on 12 June. State Minister for Sport Mick de Brenni’s appointed Return to Play advisory group, acting on advice from the Chief Health Officer, has ruled out support for groups of up to 10 being organised by sporting bodies ob(li)viating the intent of the Stage 1 easing from this weekend, concerned about the real possibility of breakdown of social distancing leading to larger gatherings eventuating at venues and in the wider community. QSport CEO Peter Cummiskey, a member of Minister de Brenni’s Return to Play advisory group, said the past few days had seen some querying of what Stage 1 means which was not altogether surprising, given some were keen to get back into their sports after weeks of not being able to do so. While we understand the desire to return as soon as possible, resumption needs to be done properly with adequate preparations by sporting bodies that take account of the requirement to observe the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions. The Roadmap enables sport’s resumption from Stage 2, not Stage 1, other than for a limited number of exemptions, and over the next week or so, State and local level administrators will work through guidelines being provided on how to resume, what needs to be done and optimise the chances of a safe experience for their participants and the wider community. Unnecessary and unwanted escalation of risk will accompany any premature, not properly planned for resumption undesirable for players, clubs and their sports if breaches against the spirit and intent of the easing of the restrictions turn up in sport. So structured, club organised training in the next few weeks Is not on. That’s for Stage 2. For further information, contact the QSport CEO Peter Cummiskey on 0418 185 008. ENDS

09.01.2022 "Here to Help" Hey Paddling Family In a bid to help club committees manage their way though the 3 stages of the Covid-19 restart, SQ Zone with direction from QS...C (Qld State Centre) provided a guideline document to all club committees. The document was the result of two meetings between other registered paddling organisations, QSC, QSport, and the Qld Minister of Sport Michael deBenni and his advisery team. Zone is here to help in three different ways: 1- The document itself gives our committees some clear guidelines around how to manage a return to training stage 1. 2- We will run Vlogs this week and next week to help club committees deal with FAQs about Covid-19 Stage 1-3. 3- QSC will continue to meet and submit exemptions to QSport and the Minister in a bid to expediate a return to full training and hopefully racing. Tomorrow 19 May at 8.30am we will be having our first Vlog with Dave, Leigh and Tracy to explain the rationale behind first doc. #inthezone #keepingyouinformed #keepmovingforward Warmest regards SQ Zone Team

08.01.2022 Dear Members, This memo is to advise that the Australian Outrigger Canoe Association (AOCRA) have made the difficult decision to postpone the 2021 Sydney Harbou...r Challenge to 2022 due to the ongoing effects of COVID-19. Due to the current situation facing the world and the ongoing level of uncertainty around international and interstate travel, AOCRA have made the decision to postpone in order to ensure the continued safety of our community. AOCRA understands that all member and international communities have been hit hard by COVID and this is another blow in what has been a very difficult year. It is, however, our priority to look after the health, safety and wellbeing of our membership to the best of our ability and to ensure that AOCRA events are not only viable, but can be attended by all who wish to attend. We thank our major sponsors for their ongoing support to date in organising this event and look forward to working closely together, along with AOCRA NSW to ensure 2022 is bigger and better than ever. Yours sincerely, Katherine Cole President AOCRA

08.01.2022 Return to training in QLD and WA (WAZA) Zones The QLD's State Government, and its health authorities have approved the AOCRA QLD State Centre’s Aquatic Industry... Sport Sector Plan effective 5 June 2020. AOCRA has also supported the plan so that insurance through AJ Gallagher covers sanctioned training sessions during Stage 2, under these new guidelines. AOCRA QLD State Centre will issue a notification to Queensland Zones and Clubs in terms of completing the required steps to ensure a smooth transition back to full training within these new guidelines. I would like to acknowledge the contribution of the AOCRA Queensland State Centre Committee, led by Tracy Watson, President, who have lobbied aggressively over the past few weeks to request an exemption. Thank you to Tracey and her team on the QLD State Centre committee. Phase 3 restrictions commence tomorrow, on June 6th, in Western Australia. WAZA will issue a communication to Clubs in terms of required steps to ensure a smooth transition back to training within these guidelines. We are not yet in position to commence sanctioned events of any kind, however the Zones will be engaging with AOCRA in the next few weeks on how and when this will occur. Please be patient as we take steps to return to sport. If you have any questions, please contact your Zone. Katherine Cole President AOCRA
07.01.2022 Big clean up and sanitisation of all our canoes today thanks to everyone who helped out we are ready to be back in our OC6 canoes this week thanks to Aocra , SQ Zone and State centre for doing the hard yards behind the scenes we are very thankful to get back on the water
07.01.2022 Dear Members, Clubs and Stakeholders, Due to global effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Australian Outrigger Canoe Racing Association (AOCRA) Board of Directo...rs in conjunction with its Zone Leaders have come to the difficult and mutual decision to cancel all events until 30 September 2020. This includes the National Marathon Titles, AOCRA Aito, Trans Tasman Gubbi Gubbi, National Junior Marathon Titles, Coaching Courses and Camps. We have been monitoring the situation closely and adhering to the advice of the Federal Government and other relevant authorities since the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus. Following the updated information and advice over the weekend from the Federal Government, and in consideration of the wider paddling community, the Board and Zones today made a decision. The decision to cancel was a very difficult one, and we are very disappointed to have to do so. However, it was done taking into consideration (but not limited to) the following: * The unknown timelines that we are all facing in terms of travel restrictions and the impact of life as we know it; * The overall health and safety of our national paddling community; * Member Zones already heavily impacted by COVID-19; * The risk to our Operations Team, Volunteers, Sub Commitees and broader stakeholders. As the national association, we have an obligation to ensure the safety of our membership and act in their best interests and in that of the sport of Outrigger Canoeing. We acknowledge and recognise the amount of work that any Zones and in particular, their local organising committees, have done in preparation for these events. We also acknowledge the significant financial impact this decision will have on Clubs, Zones and the association. AOCRA will arrange refunds for all entry fees already paid in advance excluding direct transaction costs incurred as part of the process. The Board have commenced discussions with our sponsors and stakeholdes and will be undertaking an assessment of the impact our ability to deliver on approved Strategic Projects this year based on this decision. We will also be using this time to plan for the future so as to we ensure we bounce back stronger than ever, when the time comes. In this difficult and uncertain time that we are all facing, it is fortunate to know that our paddling community is strong and it is important that we look out for each other. Please make sure that you are all adhering to COVID-19 guidelines and practice physical distancing wherever possible as communicated previously. Should you have any questions, please direct them to [email protected] Yours sincerely, Katherine Cole President, AOCRA
05.01.2022 Well.. They say things happen in threes... But we’ve now hit #5. It comes with great regret that I inform the postponement of Round one of the South Queensland... Zone marathon series hosted by us #TeamGoldCoast. It was advised that we as a committee, along with the events team re assess the current situation and if it was viable for us to go ahead with the event. With the 3 day Brisbane lockdown ending tonight it still rules out 7 clubs from even attending our event. This is because of the Covid Safe Plan that AOCRA, the Zone and Clubs opted into to get us back on the water. Therefore meaning that for a 14 day period they cannot attend any event of such. We are looking at other potential dates. I thank the committee, the events team, all our clubbies and volunteers that have been working tirelessly behind the scenes to organise the event. We all know the time and effort that goes into this. Let’s keep our heads up and soldier on forward. Remember to keep up that social distancing and good hand hygiene. Fingers crossed the next regatta goes ahead Thanks GCOCC Club President Shania Paine

04.01.2022 Dear Zones, Clubs, Members and Stakeholders Over the weekend, the Board in consultation with the Zones agreed the best way forward is to align with the social ...distancing strategy being espoused by many health experts. That means any activity that requires travel, events or meet ups being held over the next 30 days will be postponed or where necessary cancelled. Today the Government directed that non-essential gatherings over 500 people are banned from Monday 16th March. The AOCRA Board have agreed at the AOCRA National level, all events scheduled during the next 30 days will be postponed. Each Zone have their own risk management plan and will announce how they will manage their scheduled events during the next 30 days. The Zones are working with Clubs on next steps and will communicate directly to all members within their region. With this being an ever changing situation day by day, the Zones will continue to update members in their region as required. Our national sub committees are currently working on strategies to ensure we continue the momentum in certain areas of the sport where face to face contact is not required. This includes using virtual meeting tools where possible. Our goal is to continue to monitor the situation, follow expert advice and take the appropriate action. This is a complex undertaking and we thank you in advance for your cooperation and patience. While we will certainly have challenges, we will look to each of you to help us navigate them. Please continue to be in direct contact with your Zone regarding next steps in your region and keep an eye out for further AOCRA announcements via email and Facebook. We recommend everyone follow the health experts’ advice to limit your exposure and practice social distancing for all non-essential activities and hygiene guidelines. Finally, maintaining open communication is critical to all at this time as the situation is changing day to day. As always, please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns. Yours in paddling Katherine Cole President, AOCRA
04.01.2022 A COVID FRIENDLY MESSAGE TO OUR GOLD COAST CLUBS... In light of further 'gathering' restrictions placed on the Gold Coast today, this message is to advise that ...every canoe outrigging club that opted into QLD's Aquatic Group Approved Industry Plan, continues to have exemption (for now). It is business as usual when it comes to COVID safe practices at training or conducting regattas that is expecting <500 attendees. And, please continue physical distancing, washing hands, and adhering to gathering limitations advised for your area when it comes to inside and outside of the home. Any further queries please do not hesitate to email the SQ Zone at: [email protected]. The SQZ Team #inthezone
04.01.2022 VALE - MAX CHRISTMAS AM, LIFE MEMBER AOCRA Max Christmas AM, Life Member AOCRA, Chairman and CEO of the Max Christmas Group was a pioneer of outrigger canoe rac...ing in Australia. Max was also a major sponsor of OCCA, Surfers Paradise OCC, & Northclife OCC and was instrumental in developing the sport in the south QLD zone in the early days. Those who were around at the time remember Max, along with Keith Williams starting outrigger canoe racing, initially in the waterski lake at Seaworld. When Keith moved north to establish Hamilton Island resort, Max sponsored teams from the Gold Coast to race Keith's crews made up of his workforce on the island. Max and Keith also sponsored the first Aussie men's team to compete at Molokai, Keith took his super yacht over & bought back the first production canoe as deck cargo. (Malia). Remember those! The beginning of the famous Hammo Cup was born. The marathon back in those days was all the way from Catseye beach north and around to the harbour...at the time we all thought that was a really long way! Inter island paddling was our way of life and the only ticket off the island to attend races. Thanks for the great memories Max & Keith. More recently Max was honoured as being one of the 150 Queenslanders who helped shape the State of Queensland during that 150 year period. The list includes Prime Ministers, Queensland Premiers, Lord Mayors, famous sportspeople of all codes and people from music and the arts. In 2010 Max was inducted into the Gold Coast Business Excellence Awards Businessperson Hall of Fame. In 2016 Max received an appointment as a Member in the General Division of the Order of Australia. The award was announced on 13 June 2016 in the Queen’s Birthday 2016 Honours List, citing that the honour was for significant service to the real estate and property development sectors, and to tourism, local government, youth and sporting groups. Max continued to be heavily involved in many charity and community organisations. Our deepest sympathies to his paddling friends and family; his ashes were scattered at Surfers Paradise today. VALE - MAX CHRISTMAS AM, LIFE MEMBER AOCRA
