Recently completed design for a renovation project both inside and out in collaboration with Jane @4rooms The design palette of soft greys, white, bold accents and layers of green add depth and dimension The built in seat conceals existing limestone steps taking advantage of the level change whilst creating a spill out zone from the existing alfresco area. New curved steps against white washed limestone walls have been formed to soften the transi...tion between levels and gain access to a more intimate relaxation zone Replacing tired timber decking in the existing alfresco area with a continuation of soft grey paving paired with bold accents through a fresh selection of furnishings completely transforms this area. 19.01.2022 Custom designed fire place for a stunning home right on the beach with natural bush land in front and ocean views to the side A development of 6 houses in North Coogee right in front of South Beach, all with courtyard pools, except for this one! The owner (also the developer and an old client of mine) procrastinated over the pool in his own home. With a household full of kids, every inch of available outdoor space was crucial ... The way I saw it, the ocean was the pool and lets do fire! So here we are the black sheep of the block! The deck walkway down the side sits over a small garden section attached to the basement area, also the kids playroom. Originally the owner was going with voids in the deck and balustrade allowing natural light to the area. Not loving the balustrade idea, I suggested walk on skylights win, win! The addition of the custom made steel planter boxes creates an avenue of much needed greenery along with pottering gardens for Mum and the kids The basement underneath the deck walkway is the kids rumpus room and Ive transformed the small garden area into an underground aquarium! 17.01.2022 Western Australia Day, did you all have a great long weekend enjoying some of the relaxed restrictions??!!! Even though I worked all day, couldnt help but reflect how West Aussie I am! Kimberley born, 51 (odd) years ago in a hospital with 2 rooms before being closed down in 1970 to become the local jailhouse! Wyndham is an iconic small town in the most northern region of Western Australia, so isolated, raw and harsh, yet so incredibly stunning ... 15.01.2022 Works in progress at our Wembley Project This has been one HUGE transformation and absolutely loving it, especially now its getting the green on! The custom made planter boxes with Scyon panels have turned out AMAZING!!! I designed these to stop the little ones, including ones with four legs and possibly even big ones falling off the retaining wall ... I cannot speak highly enough of Josh, Tim and team @inex_pro_outdoor_living_ for their absolute dedication, quality of work, professionalism and more importantly (to me) respect for the design from start to finish..thank you so much guys! 14.01.2022 Do I go black or white?!?! One of the most common questions asked! Well you can have both and here's a recent design to showcase how the absence of colour (black) works so well with the presence of colour (white) So much to tell with this one, the owners wanted a grand DIY plan that they could chip away at over a period of 3 years or so..... A fresh space that would evolve over time from kids to teenagers and big kids to takin’ it slow I went beyond the original design scope (as I normally do!) and designed the cubby house too! 13.01.2022 Im attracting a lot of fire pit lovers lately! Here Ive added some finishing touches to an existing landscaped backyard completed by the Owners a few years ago. They wanted to spice up the pool area, turn a dead space into a functional entertaining area with a fire pit and create a gorgeous green backdrop to cocoon the space All of this was achievable by adding onto the consultation service and asking for a tailored concept design package to suit your partic...ular needs. 09.01.2022 Playing catch up! Kidding myself when I thought one day in the studio would be enough to return phone calls and respond to emails after two weeks away..eeek!! What I do know is that I desperately needed some mental refreshment (if that makes sense! ) It’s been over 20 years since I last visited Exmouth and I’ve fallen in love all over again with the biodiversity of this amazing place. ... Crystal clear turquoise waters with an abundance of marine life on one side #ningalooreef On the other side there are deep canyons and rugged red limestone ranges inhabited by an array of wildlife. Nestled between is the tranquil waters of Yardie Creek #caperangenationalpark This time of year is ‘shoulder season’ and we managed to swim with a family of humpback whales thanks to @ningaloodiscovery We didn’t spot any whale sharks due to arriving late season but looks like there are a few still hanging around AND the turtles are going nuts on the beach! 08.01.2022 Another landscape design recently completed for an Owner/Builder The Manhattan fibreglass pool and spa from @barrierreefpoolsperth had already been installed and my job was to create this small backyard into seamless multiple outdoor living spaces. By this I mean a garden nook with outdoor fire, a spot to soak up the sun on a lounger and fun for the kids whilst swimming in the pool ... The stone clad water wall houses the pool equipment behind but didn’t leave any room to continue a canvas of green, so I’ve designed custom made planter boxes to hang on the wall from behind The curved honed concrete has been designed to accommodate a sun lounger, two actually and when reclined creates additional bench seating around the fire pit. Surrounding gardens will have foliage planting that rise above the curved seat, the limited space along poolside boundary wall will see the underplanting of foxtail palms growing to meet the fence halfway. 08.01.2022 For the curve lovers!! Here are some renders and before shots of the frontyard revamp from the recently completed design in collaboration with Jane @4rooms Video fly-through on todays story and highlights in bio. The design brief for the front was to create separate private courtyards that connect to the home for additional outdoor simplistic living spaces with minimal maintenance Existing front path sloped down from the garage causing the need for unnecessary mu...ltiple steps The levels are now adjusted with an over sized curved step for sense of place. Softening the entry point, creating ease of access with multi-directional form. The dead, unused space on the left had awkward steps leading to the side gate. This has now been completely revamped by re-proposing levels and step access points to form another private chill out zone for the son and his mates, away from Dad and his mates! The house exterior is refreshed with white walls, bold trims and grey composite decking that will marry with the bold powder-coated steel retaining and soft layered gardens Oh Ive also given the letterbox a little face lift! 07.01.2022 Sweet little backyard transformation for a sweet little cottage located in Brisbane Street Perth The formed concrete seat will be dressed with custom made cushions for comfy bums and round corten steel fire pit added to set the mood A section of the side boundary fence has been designed with large pieces of curved corten steel..why you ask? The neighbours weren’t keen on removing their overgrown (encroaching) Ficus (fig) tree, swipe to see! ... 05.01.2022 Heading back to normality couldnt feel better My sleeping patterns have been a mess for quite sometime, waking up at 3am with the mind going a hundred mile an hour certainly catches up on you! At first I thought it was hormonal, then sleep apnea, but after 4 days of undisturbed sleep from 9pm to 6am, I now know its just my creative brain working overtime ... Will this revert to 3am wake ups when I return home?? I hope not!! Im loving the 6am wake ups, even 5am would be ok!! 05.01.2022 Another recent backyard transformed for the lovers of outdoor living (obviously my kind of people!) I originally designed this space 10 years ago, the owners initial needs where purely focused on retaining this mammoth corner block with levels that reached the sky! The new build, retaining and basic landscaping requirements swallowed their budget at the time, as it would! Needs and wants have changed quite dramatically, they have become a beautiful family of four, pl...us one fur baby The brief was to swap play equipment with a BIG pool and extend outdoor living spaces with a spot to cook and to enjoy an open fire. Luckily the boundary wall and top tier retaining wall had been built below ground level so I could open up the backyard a little more to accommodate the new brief by removing the lower planter box. The top tier planter box and boundary walls have been waterproofed so I designed the majority of exposed brick with weatherboard cladding with a little extra to cocoon the poolside cabana The remaining exposed walls in the pool area are minimal, my thoughts are high pressure clean, patch and gardens to conceal, the existing planter box also posed issues with pool fence compliancy Adding a touch of weatherboard to the end of pool area with an outdoor shower ties spaces together beautifully, FYI the owners have cleaned out the gardens in anticipation for their makeover! I’m in love with the cooking area designed with a multi functional in-built island bringing internal kitchen ideas to the outside. The plantation bifold shutters offer connection to the surrounding spaces when open. It’s been so lovely re-creating this space ten years on and telling my story behind the design. 04.01.2022 When you need to cover a lot of ground AND ones that slope! Juniper conferta aka Japanese Shore Juniper is such a great performer. Rated as a little slow they have completely covered and stabilised around 60m2 of this sloping front verge in three years, is that slow? I don’t think so.. With a spread of 1.8m a total of 30 plants were required, full sun and suitable for coastal conditions, basically they are SUPER hardy! As always prepare the ground with an organic soil... conditioner and install a sound reticulation system to get these beauties off and running The gorgeous soft billowing accompanying plant is Lomandra longifolia 'Tanika' teamed with thoughtfully positioned curved sections of corten steel YUM!!! For those interested, I just wanted to let you know where Im at with my current work load BUTId like to start with a massive THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart to all of my amazing clients locally and inter-state for keeping me sane, throughout these crazy times, doing what I love the most, consulting ,designing and styling exterior spaces!! ... Incredibly GRATEFUL for all my clients who have trusted me to create their outdoor spaces for the next couple of months, including two beautiful properties in QLD, one in Melbourne and Sydney This means, combined with my amazing local projects Ive got going on atm, Ill be able to take on any new designs in August (wish I could split myself in two, or maybe even three!!) Well, I’d probably still be here because I LOVE what I do There isn’t any miracle drug growing these beauties, it all comes down to three simple steps- soil preparation, irrigation and installation... This amazing display was installed by @inex_pro_outdoor_living_ using Humicarb soil conditioner from @screeningtreeswa Dichondra seems to respond extremely well to sub-surface irrigation (under-ground) however I’ve had other projects where micro-sprays risers have worked a treat as well.
