25.01.2022 Velvety leaves, highlighted veins, prolific growth and one of the few Alocasias that don’t seem to be a spider mite magnet! What more can you really ask for! 21.01.2022 This absolutely stunning velvet leaf Boesenbergia aurantiaca is not a common one likely because of its slower growing tendency. It’s in the ginger family and is a personal favourite of mine as it’s such low maintenance and will tell you when it wants water as the leaves will start to curl inwards For up for auction through the Rare, Tropical and Indoor Plant BBS Australia Facebook page starting at $20! https://www.facebook.com/groups/620600941736055/?ref=share... @ Darwin, Northern Territory

16.01.2022 Tis the season in Darwin for new growth! Which means new fresh leaves to get excited over! We aren’t the only ones that get excited though! Those sap sucking sugar addicted pests such as mealy bugs, aphids, spider mites and scale will be tippy tappin’ their tiny legs right on over to your new leaves! So keep your eyes peeled for pests, particularly on the underside of new leaves and around flowers and fruit! Happy Wednesday planty people! .... . . #darwin #plants #houseplants #plantpests #mealybug #houseplantpests #indoorplants #anthurium #aroids #arums #rareplants #crazyindoorplantpeopleaustralia #cippa #homeiswheretheplantsare #planthoarder #outsidein #outsideinnursery See more

13.01.2022 The Pilea cadierei makes the toughest little indoor plant... that’s why I’ve done plenty of cuttings! These cuttings started to shoot about a week ago and have nice healthy roots. They haven’t grown much since and this is because my propagation mix is a 2:1 fine coconut husk peat : perlite ratio. This is great for getting cuttings and seeds started but no good for established cuttings or plants because they are both inert, as in they hold no nutritional value. The cocopeat... will release some nutrients as it starts to break down but because it is such a large portion of the mix as it breaks down it can cause nitrogen draw down which can actually burn your plant on a large enough scale! They are also both pathogen free and safe for open plant tissue and sensitive seeds unlike sand which is another commonly used propagation media. If you’re wondering what the heck nitrogen draw down is I will be publishing an article on the topic as well as more in depth propagation techniques and tips through the blog section on the website once it’s up and running! . . . . . #pilea #pileacadierei #indoorplants #rareplants #tropical #plants #homeiswhertheplantsare #crazyindoorplantpeopleaustralia #plantsmakepeoplehappy #planttips #hownottokillyourplants #outsidein #outsideinnursery #darwin

09.01.2022 The difference between this Rhaphidophora cryptantha where it is attached and climbing the stake compared to where it is just trailing through thin air. Both planted at the same time, both had good aerial roots. One has smaller leaves, longer intermodal space and overall less growth. Climbing, particularly shingling plants will not grow to their full potential if they don’t have something to grow up, I’ve seen the cryptantha and other Rhaphidophors grow meters long like this.... The best type of stake (besides a tree) is one that will also retain moisture for those roots to grow into. There is a demo under the DIY highlight showing how to make your own stakes perfect for these small shingling plants! . . . . #plants #plantcare #plantcaretips #rareplants #rhaphidophora #rhaphidophoracryptantha #aroid #araceae #araceaefamily #indoorplants #diy #outsidein #outsideinnursery #darwin See more

04.01.2022 Alocasias I’ve found don’t looove being inside... by this I mean you can have them inside but they will take a little more effort than say Aglaonemas or Diffenbachias for example. This is the case for a multitude of reasons which I will touch on below. 1. Not enough airflow. They won’t like being in a room that is closed up all day with no air circulation. Even in my shadehouse I have to put all the Alocasias to the edges or near the door way to make sure they are getting eno...ugh circulation. If they aren’t it becomes a haven for SPIDER MITE which if you’ve ever had the pleasure of dealing with you’ll know you’d rather chop the head off a varigated Monstera than try to eradicate a spider mite infestation! 2. Air conditioning You know that shitty feeling you get when you accidentally fall asleep with the AC on 18 degrees celcius all night and you wake up feeling like every last drop of moisture has been sucked from your body? Well Alocasias get this feeling too! All this means is don’t have your Alocasia in the room where the AC is always running, offices and bedrooms are not the place for Alocasias. 3. Humidity Humidity is the ARACEAE families best friend... so long as it is paired with a little airflow! Now generally you don’t want humidity inside your house which is why I say Alocasias take a little more effort to have inside. If you don’t already have a spray bottle for you plants you need to invest ASAP! By misting you’re Alocasias on a regular basis this will create a sense of humidity for the plant, even better by grouping your plants together around the house they help maintain each other’s moisture which in turn creates a microclimate for your plants inside your house without making your entire house into a sauna! So overall the best indoor position for your Alocasia is in a room that gets good natural breeze and bright indirect light surrounded by lots of other plant buddies! And don’t forget to mist! Happy plant hoarding! . . . #alocasia #alocasiaclypeolata #aroids #arums #araceae #rarearoids #cippa #crazyindoorplantpeopleaustralia #houseplants #houseplantclub #philodendron #planttips #rareplants #darwin #australia #outsidein #outsideinnurser

03.01.2022 My number 1 favourite plant in my collection and possibly the whole world... And you best believe I have no idea what type of Anthurium it is, has to be some kind of hybrid. It’s got a square petiole which gives me chrystallinum vibes but crossed with what? We may never know for certain and I kinda like that! I’ll post photos of an inflorescence on my story shortly! . .... . . #anthurium #anthuriumhybrid #rareanthuriums #rarearoids #rareplants #aroids #arums #aroidcollector #plantfreak #crazyplantpeople #crazyindoorplantpeopleaustralia #cippa #indoorplants #tropicalplants See more
