19.01.2022 Westgate Tunnel Soil. In speaking with journalist Timna Jacks of ‘The Age’ newspaper, Thursday 14 Feb 2020, the Werribee Riverkeeper covered the following point...s regarding the storage of West Gate Tunnel soil Wyndhamvale Rail Stabling Yards: The Werribee River Association (WRA) notes that the site is on sloping land, leading down to the Werribee River. The land surrounding the area within only a hundred metres or so, is zoned residential, and currently the Savanna housing estate housing can be seen immediately over Hobbs Rd, on the east side of the site. The proposed Werribee Township Regional Park, stretching along the Werribee River commences some 500 metres downstream of the site. The Werribee River is a highly regulated river, with a low environmental flow allocation, suffers from blue-green algae concerns, and has build-ups of Azolla and Lemna minor. If any toxins were introduced to the river through the long-term storage of the soil should it be heavily contaminated, the contaminants will end up in the river, or aquifers below which supply water to the river. The Werribee River Diversion Weir Pool is formed within the land proposed for the park, and that water is diverted just five kilometres downstream for irrigation to Werribee South vegetable farms. In the recent past WRA has contributed its thoughts to the review of the EPA, has been involved on State Government supported initiatives such as the ‘Melbourne Water Healthy Waterways Strategy’, and the joint Minister for Water and a Minister for Planning initiative ‘Waterways of the West.’ In each of those initiatives stakeholders were encouraged to work together and achieve partnerships. Yet despite WRA expressing its desire for a cleaner environment, healthy waterways, and willingness to work with all stakeholders and sharing all our research and on-ground activity of our 400 volunteers, we have received no detail, no assurances or any information about this matter. The exact details of the contamination in the soil is not known, and therefore if it is to be stored anywhere, then it needs to be properly analysed and results made known to all. Storage of the soil on this site or any site implies that a soil remediation program will take place, and details of that program need to be known by all. WRA has its own on-going long-term water quality data on the Werribee River, is conducting pollution mapping of local waterways, works with universities on research on nutrients, and manages six local groups working on programs for litter, revegetation or conservation activity, and hosts the Werribee Riverkeeper, who acts as the voice of the waterways. Werribee Riverkeeper John Forrester said, Storing this soil anywhere, Bacchus Marsh coal-mine, Ravenhall tip, or in Hobbs Rd will affect local communities and waterways of the west, all impacting on human health and liveability. It is of concern that no assertive statements are being made about the soil by the Environment Protection Authority It has been noted that the local member’s office in Werribee had not made any statement to the local community on this matter. The Victorian State Government has released very little information about this matter. ‘The Age’ newspaper unfortunately did not use any of the above in their article in the newspaper or on-line.
