24.01.2022 Another photo of the beautiful Hutan from Monday's trip to Melbourne Zoo. #ZooTigers I ended up taking nearly 1600 photos just trying to capture his magnificent features, especially his eyes. Taken with Nikon #D500 at Zoos Victoria #ovensphotography #ovensphotographyau #mynikonlife #zoomembers
24.01.2022 Today is World Lion Day! Make sure to go and say "Hi" to the lions at Zoos Victoria. Did you know that lions are, overall, listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List? Whilst in some parts of Africa, particularly in the south, lions are doing okay, in northern parts of Africa they are Critically Endangered, with the main threat to them coming from human activities. As you can see, lions are definitely big cats, but probably not the sort you want scratching your couch or sitting... on your lap. You can visit these boys on the Carnivore Trail at Melbourne Zoo, or visit their relatives at Werribee Open Range Zoo. Make sure while you're there to catch the keeper talk too. #OvensPhotography #ZoosVictoria #ZooMember #CarnivoreTrail #WorldLionDay
22.01.2022 Yesterday gave us a magical moment in the presence of a truly rare beauty thanks to Zoos Victoria. We are still processing the images, but here is a sneak peak of the gorgeous Miska. More images will follow on our blog soon. #ZoosVictoria #ZooMember #ILoveWildlife #MyNikonLife #OvensPhotography #SnowLeopard #Miska
22.01.2022 While many of us probably know that the emu and kangaroo feature on the Australian Coat of Arms, do you know that the Helmeted Honeyeater is Victoria's State bi...rd emblem? The Helmeted Honeyeater, like the Leadbeater's Possum (Victoria's State faunal emblem), is critically endangered, with the main threats being predation by feral cats and habitat loss, but Zoos Victoria is working hard to ensure that they do not become extinct. You can find out more and see Quin and many other iconic Australian animals (and plants!) at #HealesvilleSanctuary.
21.01.2022 Yesterday was #WorldSparrowDay and today, somewhat fittingly, is #InternationalDayOfForests. Many animals rely on native forests for homes, nesting sites/hollows and food. The Koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) is an excellent example of a species that is wholly dependent upon native forests for both food and shelter. The Koala faces many threats to survival, not only from land clearing, bushfires and disease, but also from close contact with humans through traffic accidents and predation by dogs. The preservation of native eucalyptus forests won't only help the Koalas, but also provides many other species with benefits, including us. Photograph taken at Healesville Sanctuary (Zoos Victoria)July 2017. #ZooMember #ZoosVictoria #OvensPhotography #MyNikonLife
21.01.2022 Happy International Mother Earth Day!! We are all thankful for the things our mothers do for us, but how often do we remember to actually do things for our mothers and especially Mother Earth? Take a moment today to think about one small change you can make that will help our Mother Earth. Using fewer plastics, recycling and turning off our lights/devices when not needed are just a few of the little things we can do. #MotherEarthDay #ZoosVictoria #ZooMember #OvensPhotography
21.01.2022 As 2018 closes, we've put together a video using some of our photos from various trips to Zoos Victoria. We didn't make it to Werribee in 2018 unfortunately, but we did have multiple trips to Melbourne to visit our favourite big cats, especially Miska the Snow Leopard. Of course, volunteering out at Healesville Sanctuary meant getting to know some of the natives pretty well.
21.01.2022 Had a fantastic day at Melbourne Zoo yesterday (thanks Zoos Victoria). One huge highlight of the day was catching a glimpse of the new baby Siamang and hearing Miska (the snow leopard) using her voice (post to follow)!! At first, all I could see was the baby's foot, but soon mum kindly turned around to give me and a few other lucky visitors a good look at bub! :) #OvensPhotography #ZooMember #MyNikonLife
21.01.2022 We nearly forgot to post this photo for #WorldSparrowDay! This image was captured in Melbourne CBD (Australia) in November 2016.
21.01.2022 This is Sanja's entry in the Zoos Victoria Member's Photography competition. Taken November 26, 2017, at Melbourne Zoo. At the time, the Gibbons were calling loudly to one another, proclaiming their presence. It was a truly magical moment.
20.01.2022 Happy International Mother Earth Day! In celebration of this day let us take a look at this magnificent lady, Magra, from Healesville Sanctuary. Magra is a full grown Wedge-tailed Eagle of around 40 years old, weighing about 4kg and with an impressive wing-span of around 2.5 metres. She, along with lifetime mate Jess (male) are the resident eagles in the sanctuary, staring in the Spirits of the Sky show. Magra is the larger of the two and loves showing off her awesome wings a...nd flight abilities. Today is a good time to reflect on how our actions affect other species and to once again commit ourselves to reduce, reuse and recycle. We can also help our native wildlife by signing up to Zoos Victoria & RSPCA Victoria "Safe Cat, Safe Wildlife" initiative (http://www.safecat.org.au). Domestic cats can have a great impact on native species and also compete with other predators, like the Wedge-tailed Eagle, for prey, although feral (and domestic) cats can form part of the eagle's prey. For more of our Wedge-tailed Eagle photos check out https://flic.kr/s/aHsmepZEF3 #OvensPhotography, #ZoosVictoria, #RSPCA, #SafeCatSafeWildlife, #SafeCat, #MyNikonLife, #ZooMember, #MotherEarthDay
20.01.2022 Happy International Cat Day!! Today's the day to celebrate cats be they big or small. Our cats seem to think every day is their day and we humans exist to cater to their every whim, but today they'll get a little extra attention. We also know that our cats will be safely snuggled up inside and keeping out of the winter weather. We're looking forward to visiting the big cats at Melbourne Zoo next week to say a special hello, especially to our favourites on the Carnivore's Trail. #ZoosVictoria #ZooMembers #SafeCat #MyNikonLife #OvensPhotography
20.01.2022 Visited Melbourne Zoo yesterday to catch up with some feline friends at Zoos Victoria, especially Hutan the Sumatran Tiger (#ZooTigers). Managed to get some great shots of this beautiful boy with my Nikon #D500 and even had the opportunity to tell a few visiting school children about how they can help save these magnificent cats by urging the Government to require the labelling of Palm Oil in products. #DontPalmUsOff #OvensPhotography #OvensPhotographyAu #ZoosVictoria #ZooMember #MyNikonLife
19.01.2022 It is a good thing our cats are not as well armed as Hutan from Melbourne Zoo (Zoos Victoria) -- we'd have no carpet or furniture left in the house. This gif is made from several photos taken with a Nikon #D500 in burst mode. #OvensPhotography #OvensPhotographyAU #MyNikonLife #ZooMember #ZooTiger
17.01.2022 Wednesday night/Thursday morning's lunar eclipse was a sight to behold and like many, we were out with our Nikon cameras. Here are a few sample images from the event with more to follow on our website soon. #OvensPhotography #LunarEclipse #MyNikonLife
17.01.2022 Today is World Orang-utan Day! These highly intelligent and beautiful creatures are listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List, mostly due to habitat loss from Palm Oil plantations. You can do your bit to help them, tigers, rhinos and elephants, by joining the Zoos Victoria #DontPalmUsOff campaign (https://www.zoo.org.au/ge/act-for-wildlife/dont-palm-us-off). Demand clear labelling of Palm Oil and buy products that only use Certified Sustainable Palm Oil. #OvensPhotography #OvensPhotographyAU #ZooMember #ZoosVictoria
16.01.2022 Like many other cats, Hutan likes to scratch his claws along something to keep them ready for action. Thankfully our little furbabies are not as well equipped as Hutan is, but they still need places to scratch and enrichment activities. Taken at Melbourne Zoo, 25 June 2018 on Nikon #D500. #ZooTigers #OvensPhotography #OvensPhotographyAu #ZooMembers
16.01.2022 Happy International Cat Day!! Today is a great day to sign up for the RSPCA Victoria & Zoos Victoria #SafeCatSafeWildlife initiative if you haven't already. (http://www.safecat.org.au/) Of course, our two beautiful girls are loving the indoor lifestyle with plenty of toys, lots of places to sleep (or hide), plenty of pats and even the occasional belly-rub from visitors, two humans at their beck-and-call to provide food/entertainment, plus two warm laps to sleep on when the humans watch TV.
14.01.2022 Another 21st party this evening for a wonderful person who works with Zoos Victoria and has recently started her doctorate degree. We are so lucky to be there and be involved with such lovely people and their families. We are equally privileged to support their studies through our YourStatsGuru business.
13.01.2022 Today is #WorldWildlifeDay and we've been spending it, indoors and out of the heat, with our beautiful fur-babies. We love our cats and we love our native wildlife which is why we and our cats are signed up to the RSPCA Victoria and Zoos Victoria #SafeCatSafeWildlife. If you haven't done so already, why not sign up today at www.safecat.org.au. Not only will you be helping our native wildlife, but they have some great tips on how you can have more fun with your felines to help them live a longer and happier life with you.
12.01.2022 Today is World Wetlands Day! Many wetlands are under threat from human activities and pollution, yet these wetlands are vital for the survival of many species upon which we depend. One way you can help is pledge to "Blow bubbles, not balloons". Sign up on Zoos Victoria's website (https://www.zoo.org.au/get-involv/act-for-wildlife/balloons). Not only will you be helping to reduce plastic waste ending up in our waterways, but also helping to prevent birds like the Australian P...elican from ingesting such plastics. These magnificent birds are frequently seen on both inland and costal waterways. You can even spot them at Melbourne Zoo, Healesville Sanctuary and Werribee Open Range Zoo making themselves comfortable around the ponds, streams and waterholes. #OvensPhotography #ZooMember #ZoosVictoria #MyNikonLife
12.01.2022 How does one celebrate the end of exams with students? Why by burning some notes of course!!
10.01.2022 Today is International Day of Forests and a perfect day to commit to doing your bit to reduce the impact on our native forests using the three R's - Reduce, Reuse and Recycle! You can also help by ensuring you buy only sustainably sourced paper which will help prevent the destruction of habitats for many of our native species including the beautiful Lyrebird. #OvensPhotography #ZoosVictoria #ZooMember #InternationalDayOfForests
09.01.2022 Had a fantastic day at Perth Zoo yesterday. Met some wonderful people and animals, naturally taking many photos. Here's a sneak peek of some of my favourite unedited shots from the day.
09.01.2022 Took the camera for a workout at Melbourne Zoo yesterday. It seemed that a few of the animals were in a bit of a cheeky mood. :) Miska (the snow leopard) was having fun chasing a few birds and hissing/growling at them. Indrah (the Sumatran tigress) was trying to find the ideal spot to have a snooze in the early morning sun, while the Tassie Devil already had his sunbaking spot picked out. All that just on the Carnivore's Trail!! #OvensPhotography #ZoosVictoria #ZooMember #MyNikonLife Zoos Victoria
09.01.2022 Yesterday’s view from the rock was awesome. Was great to spend the day with my darling wife. Thankfully she didn’t go missing after lunch.
08.01.2022 Today is World Wildlife Day and this year's theme is "Big cats: predators under threat". For more details check out http://www.wildlifeday.org/. Organisations like Zoos Victoria are doing their bit to help fight extinction and YOU can help too. Visit http://www.zoo.org.au/get-involved/act-for-wildlife/ to find out about some of the small things you can do that make a huge difference. Whilst today's focus is on the big cats like the Snow Leopard, Sumatran Tiger or Lion picture...d below (photos taken at Melbourne Zoo). We also need to take action on behalf of our domestic cats (aka our fur-babies). Zoos Victoria and RSPCA Victoria have teamed up to help those owned by cats learn how to better look after them and also protect the local wildlife. Visit http://www.safecat.org.au/ and sign up today to find out more. #OvensPhotography #WorldWildlifeDay #BigCats #PredatorsUnderThreat #WWD2018 #ZooMember #ZoosVictoria #SafeCatSafeWildlife #MyNikonLife
06.01.2022 Yesterday was World Bee Day. Bees tend to get a bad rap. They are not angry winged hunters actively seeking out humans to sting. Rather, they are a vital part of the pollination of many plants, including many that we depend on for food. We should be doing all we can to try and welcome these hard workers into our gardens. #WorldBeeDay #OvensPhotography #MyNikonLife
05.01.2022 Today is World Wetlands Day. Wetlands are a vital part of the climate system, storing rainwater and providing habitat for many species of fish, birds, mammals and reptiles. The Philippine crocodile, like Isabella here, is one of the critically endangered species that typically inhabits wetlands. You can visit Isabella at Melbourne Zoo and find out more about the work Zoos Victoria are doing to help prevent the extinction of this very special reptile. #WorldWetlandsDay #ZoosVictoria #ZooMember #FightingExtinction
03.01.2022 Happy International Tigers' Day!! This gorgeous boy is Hutan from Melbourne Zoo. #ZoosVictoria #ZooMember #DontPalmUsOff #MyNikonLife
01.01.2022 Here's another shot of Hutan from Monday's trip to Melbourne Zoo (Zoos Victoria). Hutan was practising his hunting techniques, stalking the birds that had flown into his habitat. Taken on 25 June 2018 with Nikon #D500 #OvensPhotography #OvensPhotographyAU #ZooMember #ZooTiger #DontPalmUsOff
01.01.2022 A selection of photos from our 2014 adventures with our Nikon gear. #OvensPhotography #MyNikonLife #BackCatalogue
01.01.2022 Happy International Biological Diversity Day! This is Millie, the Barking Owl, who you can meet at Zoos Victoria Spirits of the Sky show in Healesville. Whilst the Barking Owl is not yet listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List, their natural habitat is under increasing threat from human activities. Barking owls are mostly nocturnal and have a fairly broad diet. They generally live in forests or areas with large trees, needing tree hollows for their nests. To find out more a...bout these and other fantastic Australian birds, take a trip out to Healesville Sanctuary and catch the Spirits of the Sky show at 12pm and 2.30pm. #OvensPhotography, #ZoosVictoria, #MyNikonLife, #ZooMember, #BiologicalDiversityDay
01.01.2022 As 2017 draws to a close, check out the post from our latest trip to Melbourne Zoo. Thanks to Zoos Victoria staff and volunteers, we once again had an awesome day complete with a few magical experiences with the animals. http://www.matthewovens.photography//a-trip-to-melbourne-/ #OvensPhotography #ZooMembers #MyNikonLife
01.01.2022 Today (26 January) is International Environmental Education Day, as well as Australia Day and Republic Day (India). Why not take some time out today to learn something new about the world around us. For example, did you know that the Ring-tailed Lemur is in fact a primate, just like us humans? Ring-tailed lemurs are also sociable animals living in groups of around 30 with the females as the dominant members of the group (a common trait amongst lemurs). Ring-tailed lemur's l...ike to warm up in the early morning sun, often sitting, facing the sun and looking like they are doing yoga. They are also omnivores, but mostly eat fruit and leaves. Did you also know that the Ring-tailed Lemur is listed as an ENDANGERED species? Ring-tailed lemurs are native to Madagascar but are under increasing threat of extinction due to habit loss, fragmentation of their population and hunting for the "bush meat" trade. If you want to know more about these beautiful animals and see them "in the fur", take a trip to Zoos Victoria's fantastic Lemur Island exhibit at Melbourne Zoo. The keepers and volunteers at the zoo are a wealth of information and very friendly. You can even arrange a close-encounter with the lemurs that helps support Zoos Victoria's efforts as part of the world-wide conservation program for the Ring-tailed lemur (https://www.zoo.org.au//wild-encounters/close-up-encounters). #OvensPhotography #ZoosVictoria #ZooMember #MyNikonLife
