17.01.2022 Today is #HumanRightsDay! OVIS CEO Dawn Smith was privileged to attend an afternoon tea hosted by the Governor at Government house for the #16DaysInWA. The afternoon tea was to thank sector representatives for their work in supporting women, children and families experiencing family and domestic violence. Speaking at the event the Governor said,... "It is fitting that this campaign started on 25 November the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and ends on 10 December, Human Rights Day. I want to acknowledge and express my appreciation for the extremely important work that your organisations do to support women and children in family and domestic violence situations. Your work is often life saving for these people and cannot be underestimated. As a community we still have a long way to go in changing societal attitudes towards women. It is encouraging to see campaigns such as 16 Days in WA and the excellent work that service organisations are doing in making a change in our community" #RespectStartsWithYou #StopTheViolence

12.01.2022 Of the approximately 49,000 family violence cases that were triaged by police and specialist agencies last year, children were present for about 16,000 of them. Children who are exposed to family and domestic violence at home are more likely to experience learning difficulties, behavioural problems, bullying and homelessness. These are just some of the many costs of violence against women and their children.... We all have a role to play in ensuring all Western Australians are able to live free from violence. Join the 16 Days in WA campaign to find out how you can do your bit to stop gender-based violence: https://www.communities.wa.gov.au/projects/16-days-in-wa/ #16DaysinWA #StoptheViolence #RespectStartsWithYou

08.01.2022 For more than 30 years we have been the primary provider of family and domestic violence services in the Peel region, initially as Pat Thomas House and more recently as OVIS Community Services. Our new name and brand, launched in February 2020, embodies our purpose and the value we provide to our clients and the community - to Overcome Violence and Inspire Safety. We strive to empower people to live safer lives by approaching family and domestic violence services from a holi...stic, person-centred perspective. Our accessible, relevant and empowering programs are delivered by compassionate professionals through four service pillars. These are: Crisis accommodation and support services, early intervention services, post-crisis support and community education programs. We are deeply connected to our community and collaborate with partners to sustainably provide programs that empower people to live a life free of violence and abuse See more

08.01.2022 When it opens its doors later this year, the Peel refuge will be Western Australia’s first therapeutic women’s refuge. It was great to view the fantastic prog...ress on the refuge and meet the newly appointed service provider on site with David Templeman MLA today. The refuge will use an innovative therapeutic model to provide coordinated and tailored services for victims of family and domestic violence who may have mental health concerns and/or harm from alcohol and other drugs. OVIS Community Services (formerly known as Pat Thomas House), which has been awarded the contract to operate the refuge, has a strong track record in delivering services for women and children. This impressive new refuge will provide vital specialist services to Western Australians escaping violence, so I look forward to it starting operations in the coming months.

08.01.2022 Congratulations to our CEO, Dawn Smith, on being elected to the board of the Centre for Women’s Safety and Well-Being (formerly the Women’s Council).

07.01.2022 With family and domestic violence in the news again today, I don’t know who needs to see this but help IS available.

07.01.2022 It was fantastic to visit the site of the Peel Therapeutic Women’s Refuge today with the Minister for Prevention of Family and Domestic Violence, Hon Simone McG...urk MLA. The McGowan Government has invested a total of $10.5 million into the Refuge and it will serve as a huge support for local women and children who may be in crisis situations. I am also particularly pleased that the tender to operate the service has been won by a local partnership, OVIS Community Services and Allambee Counselling. This was a major Election Commitment I made before the 2017 State Election and I am proud that it has been delivered.

05.01.2022 The announcement from the WA Government that the family violence legislation reform bill has finally been passed, is welcomed by all the OVIS team.

03.01.2022 Our Chairperson, Megan Mckrill and CEO, Dawn Smith had the pleasure of attending the ‘Stand Up, Speak Out and Act’ high tea today, hosted by Communicare Inc. and White Ribbon Australia. To find out more on this important campaign, take a look at the White Ribbon Australia Facebook page. Every person has a role to play in ending family and domestic violence.

03.01.2022 Overcome Violence Breaking free from domestic violence is not easy, but it is definitely worth the journey. Whether a domestic violence victim needs a safe place to stay or support on the journey to overcome violence, OVIS is here to empower people to be free from abuse. Follow Laura’s Walk of Freedom journey https://www.givenow.com.au/crowdraiser//lauraswalkoffreedom

03.01.2022 Today, two new offences take effect in Western Australia to protect victims of family and domestic violence. Research tells us that non-lethal strangulation is ...one of the strongest indicators of an increased risk of homicide. There are often no visible injuries, but it can still have severe medical consequences for the victim. To reflect the seriousness of this conduct, our new law against ‘suffocation and strangulation’ means it can be charged and prosecuted as a specific criminal offence. Persistent family violence is now also a criminal offence, recognising that physical and psychological abuse against a partner often forms a pattern of offending. It applies to an act of family violence against one victim on three or more occasions, over a 10-year period. These changes are part of the McGowan Government’s ongoing efforts to stop family and domestic violence in the community. They put WA at the forefront of criminalising this behaviour. By holding perpetrators to account, we can save lives.

03.01.2022 I can’t think of a better way to spend day two of our 16 Days in WA campaign than opening the McGowan Government’s new state-of-the-art women’s refuge in Peel. ... The opening of ‘Warlang Bidi’ (which means ‘healthy path’ in Noongar language) marks the delivery of an important commitment that we took to the 2017 election, and significantly increases capacity in the region to support women and children escaping family and domestic violence. It is also WA’s first therapeutic refuge, setting a new standard for refuges that enable women to live free from violence and have a place to call home. This means that, as well as accommodation, it will provide tailored specialist services to address any co-occurring needs that women may have, such as mental health concerns or harm from alcohol and other drugs. By holistically managing each person’s needs, and helping to build their capacity and resilience, the therapeutic model will help them to get their lives back on track after experiencing violence. The refuge will be delivered by experienced service provider OVIS Community Services in partnership with Allambee Counselling. I’m very proud to be opening WA’s first therapeutic refuge on time and during 16 Days in WA, which is also key to our efforts to address high rates of family and domestic violence in the community. #16DaysinWA #RespectStartsWithYou #StoptheViolence
