25.01.2022 Incredible dry stone walls dissect the landscape of the Aran Islands. These were built over long periods of time, gradually clearing the ground as the soil was built up by collecting sand and seaweed. The walls also function as shelter. A relatively mild climate, regular rain means the islands have a long growing period, hence the long grass and healthy cattle.... They walls look great, but I'll stick to plain electric fencing...

22.01.2022 What does the Tasmanian abortion debate have to do with Ireland? Well, Ireland's recent referendum has finally granted women the right to access abortion services. The legacy of Church dogma meant that, by most standards, their laws were pretty extreme and forced women in crisis to travel abroad to access services. The trauma, shame and secrecy has had devastating affects on women and the old laws did little in the way of preventing abortion.....Tas Labor decriminalised abort...ion in 2013 which the conservatives fought tooth and nail. With the closure of private clinics, women, in some circumstances are having to fly interstate, not unlike the situation in Ireland. This could be addressed by simply facilitating the process through our public system, but it appears, once again, the health minister and the hard right of the Liberal party want to dictate terms and the choices of women. Thank-you Michelle. See more

21.01.2022 Before penalty rates were cut, the Business Council of Australia repeated the claim that wages were too high and cuts were needed to stimulate jobs and promote economic growth. They provided zilch in the way of economic analysis, research or detailed policy input. They just bleated the line 'wages too high' over and over again, as did their mates in the Liberal party....well surprise, surprise penalty rate cuts haven't stimulated jobs growth and, I can assure you, they won't in the future. Remember that next time the Business Council of Australia appears on a news panel looking for the next handout.

20.01.2022 The Prodigy, live last night at Ireland's biggest music festival....my ears seem to be still working. As a country lad, camping along with 50 odd thousand people took some adjustment...and I was staying in the quiet spots! A real Eye-opener.

19.01.2022 Does anyone have or know of available rental property in Scottsdale and be willing to rent to some new families wishing to move to the town?

14.01.2022 Haven't posted in a while, busy on the farm and all....but good to see progress on this front. The issue of land clearing is tricky when it comes to farming groups, but retaining existing vegetation is the most cost effective means of reducing emissions....

09.01.2022 I reckon we've got one of the prettiest farms in NE Tasmania. Nestled in a valley, flanked by tall forest. We've reserved about 20 ha of rainforest along the creeks and rivers. But all this bush comes with a problem: wallabies. They demolish the winter feed and lost grass means lost revenue. So the long process of fencing them out continues! #tassiefarming #conservation #wallabyprooffencing

07.01.2022 Last day with me old mate Blake, farm dog and work companion. After losing his hind leg two years ago we never thought he'd make it to 18 years. But he really started to struggle the last month, and we took him to the vet. Pretty devastated but I know he was spared the suffering of further deterioration and decline. We spent the last day as per normal, working down the paddock. He was snoozing in a basket of straw unaware I was building a small monument in memory of the good times. As a kid I remember the same spot had a vast sprawling blackwood with a rusted out Chevrolet ute below, both long gone. I've planted a blackwood for Blake which hopefully will become as vast, beautiful and sprawling as before.

06.01.2022 Republic of Ireland, Cloughjordan Village. My mate Bruce is an amazing grower exploring ways to enhance community resilience and food security through the #red_garden project. His YouTube channel is a fantastic resource for growers whether they be market gardeners or people just growing a few veggies for themselves. Having access to good, healthy and local produce can have a transformational impact on local communities.

04.01.2022 Blake, my three legged, semi retired 'work colleague' is out working with me in the rain, 30 mm is predicted. We're just about to go out and finish installing a water trough. I have a rain jacket, he gets the tarp. #farm #farmdog #tassiefarmers

02.01.2022 Luan has been helping feeding out hay. Cold, wet and muddy....she doesn't seem to mind. #tassiefarming #bordercollie #agistment #dairy

01.01.2022 As a farmer I'm deeply disturbed by this dodgey waste of taxpayer dollars. As someone who cares for the environment and our nation's largest river system...I'm shocked. This government must be held accountable.
