25.01.2022 GOOD NEWS ALERT: Your voice has been heard! Thank you to everyone who showed your suppor to End Covid for All - you've made a difference to people's lives. 25.01.2022 Were so proud to help fund the new Point and be Proud: The Ripple Effect documentary with ex-AFL player, Nicky Winmar, diving in to the impacts of racial discrimination and bullying on mental health. Winmar famously lifted his jumper and pointed to his skin during a football game in 1993 when he kicked a goal after being racially abused. He fought against racial discrimination and stood up for Indigenous Australians, saying he was black and proud. However the constant ...bullying took a toll on his mental health and still does to this day. See the teaser here and look out for the documentary soon. #OxfamPassTheMic #FirstPeoplesJustice #AlwaysWasAlwaysWillBe
25.01.2022 As our world reels from the coronavirus pandemic, the time has never been more urgent to challenge inequality and poverty, and dismantle entrenched privilege and impunity. Oxfam’s new strategy is focused on global inequality, and tackling the systems and norms that sustain it. We must join together to halt deepening discrimination, sexism and racism, driving climate and ecological breakdown, and reverse the coarsening of our politics which exacerbates conflict and depr...ivation. Oxfam's work is grounded in the commitment to the universality of human rights. Driven by diversity and founding our asks in evidence and experience, we take sides against poverty and injustice everywhere. Feminist approaches guide all our analysis, action and interaction. Our new Global Strategic Framework 2020 - 2030 belongs not to us but to those who inspire, support and work with and among us. Thank you for helping us to listen and change and build this new strategy for our future. And thank you for your continued support! You are central to all of this - we could not do any of it without you.
24.01.2022 Our Facebook feed might look a little different for the next few weeks. In order to show our commitment to our work with First Nations Peoples and communities, starting today on 9th August - International Day of the Worlds Indigenous Peoples - well only be sharing stories about the First Peoples of this country. In recent months, Black Lives Matter and deaths in custody have brought First Nations justice to the fore, but these problems are not new. We cannot understand ...the socio-economic context of First Peoples lives without understanding: The impact of colonisation, including the disruption to their social order, the violence and plundering of lands and water. Exclusion from political and economic power. Systemic racism and discriminatory laws, policies and practices that continue to be enacted on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to this day. Weve worked with Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander communities for over 47 years. But theres more work than ever to be done to challenge injustice, fix broken systems, and support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples right to self-determination. We hope youll join us throughout August as we share content from our First Peoples Program team, as well as some community champions from the sector doing incredible work. #OxfamPassTheMic #FirstPeoplesJustice #AlwaysWasAlwaysWillBe
24.01.2022 The sky gets dark. You look up overhead. Its eerie. You hear a clackety-clack sound. Millions of locusts are circling above you.... This is what its currently like to live in Kenya, where they are experiencing their worst locust crisis in 70 years. The swarms can eat the same amount of food as 35,000 people, every single day. And the crops they are feasting on were supposed to keep the hungry tummies of local families full. But were on the ground, providing stop-gap solutions for Kenyan farmers, and helping them rebuild their livelihoods. If youd like to help, you can donate at www.oxfam.org.au/locusts.
24.01.2022 I work as a bus driver; I am usually back home at 6 00 p.m. My sister prepared dinner and gave me a plate. At first the sound felt like an airplane passing by but really loud. I told my sister its an airstrike. When the explosion happened, the plate flew from my hands to the ceiling then fell back and smashed on the floor. Everything was destroyed, it was like an earthquake. Everything that was glass or wood got destroyed, couches were destroyed the table broke as well and... all of the kitchenware. Life must continue, its going to be difficult, but we must continue living it and we will never leave our country behind ever. Tony, Lebanon : Sam Tarling/Oxfam

21.01.2022 THE SYSTEM HAS FAILED COVID-19 has laid bare an economic model designed to deliver profits for the wealthiest on the backs of the worlds poorest people. And weve got the research to show it. ... Our latest report, Power, Profits and the Pandemic shows that dozens of the worlds largest companies stand to see their profits jump by more than $109 billion in 2020. In a year that 400 million people around the world have lost their jobs, resulting in: more people held back by inequality, more people experiencing injustice, and more people trapped in poverty. We are at a critical juncture. We have a choice between returning to business as usual, or learning from this moment to design a fairer and more sustainable economy that works for all. Now is the opportunity for a hard look at the broken system so we can build back better, and put people and the environment before profits. SHARE this post if youre with us! Or you can read more about our latest report: https://media.oxfam.org.au/

20.01.2022 Oxfam Australia acknowledges Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the original custodians of the land, and respects the rights that they hold as traditional custodians. We also recognise the dispossession of the land and its ongoing effects on First Nations Peoples today. Weve got offices in Narrm (Melbourne), Warrang (Sydney), and Meanjin (Brisbane). But right now, as we work from home during the coronavirus crisis, our staff are working across multiple lands that belong to traditional owner groups. #OxfamPassTheMic #FirstPeoplesJustice #AlwaysWasAlwaysWillBe
19.01.2022 Did you know that Australia is the only Commonwealth country that does not have a treaty with its Indigenous people? What does that mean and why is it a concern for First Peoples? Without a treaty, we are ignoring the truth of our history: that Indigenous people occupied this land and endured horrific injustices when it was taken from them. A treaty is an agreement designed to end conflict. In Australia, it addresses a conflict that has endured for more than 250 years. A ...treaty represents unity, honesty and healing. Its a way to acknowledge the past and move forward together. Its our chance to address a long history of colonialism and the scars its left and a history of disempowerment, disadvantage, discrimination and despair, says Ngarra Murray, Oxfams First Peoples Program National Manager and member of the First Peoples Assembly of Victoria, who are currently developing a treaty for Victoria with the government. We have an incredible opportunity right now to recast the relationship between Aboriginal peoples and non-Aboriginal peoples and the government of Victoria. Its a time for a new era of relationships, that puts decision-making powers back into the hands of our people. #OxfamPassTheMic #FirstPeoplesJustice #AlwaysWasAlwaysWillBe
19.01.2022 I hope to gain a greater insight on the role of women in politics, especially Indigenous women. Not only where do we fit and where can we fit, but what new pathways can we open to empower us and have our voices heard. Not just at a federal level but at a state and local level. - Telona Pitt, Straight Talk participant from the Pilbara and of the Meriam people of the Torres Strait. 19.01.2022 BREAKING NEWS: Traditional owners took action to stop the construction of Adanis Carmichael coalmine today, protecting their ancestral land. Last year, the Queensland government extinguished native title over 1,385 hectares of Wangan and Jagalingou country, compulsorily acquiring the land granting the Adani freehold title - an agreement that was created without free, prior and informed consent of the Wangan and Jagalingou people. Today we are re-establishing tribal contro...l of our homelands, Adrian Burragubba, a Wangan and Jagalingou elder, said. #AlwaysWasAlwaysWillBe #FirstPeoplesJustice #OxfamPassTheMic

17.01.2022 Yesterday we released our ground-breaking report Shopping for a Bargain: the first detailed investigation of its kind. The SBS News story below explains the issue brilliantly: "The businesses practices of some big Australian fashion brands are being condemned for keeping workers in Bangladeshi garment factories in poverty. Oxfam's report card on 10 of the best known Australian labels with commitments to ethical practices, found few are living up to them". Thank you Ethical ...Clothing Australia for shedding light on practices in Australia too. 15.01.2022 Last year, in an historic first, the First Peoples Assembly of Victoria was established as the elected voice for Aboriginal people and communities in future Treaty discussions. The Assembly is made up of members from Aboriginal communities and traditional owner groups throughout Victoria, and we couldnt be prouder that our very own staff member, Ngarra Murray, First Peoples Program National Manager, was elected as a Metropolitan member At the beginning of August, aft...er seven months of meetings and consultation, the Assembly begun negotiations with the State on the process for future Treaty making in Victoria. "Im excited to be a part of the team that is bringing the collective voice and wisdom of the Assembly to this work with the State so that we can continue meaningful talks about the substantive issues the Treaty negotiation framework, Truth-Telling process, and setting up the Treaty Authority." Assembly Member Ngarra Murray You can listen to Ngarras maiden speech in the Assembly below. #OxfamPassTheMic #FirstPeoplesJustice #AlwaysWasAlwaysWillBe #TreatyNow
15.01.2022 The Yuin people on NSWs South Coast have faced decades of harassment and incarceration for carrying out their traditional fishing practices on their own land. Our research showed that First Nations people accounted for 80% of the people jailed in NSW for fishing offences over the past decade. They started sending people to jail for things that we see as our culture... [fishings] not a crime to us. - Wally, Yuin elder & activist. In 2017, thanks to your support,... we started to partner with this community to help amplify their voice, share their stories of injustice, and restore their full historic rights to fish these sacred waters. Together, we will continue our work towards First Nations justice #OxfamPassTheMic #FirstPeoplesJustice #AlwaysWasAlwaysWillBe

14.01.2022 Have you heard the phrase truth-telling before? Its a really important one, so take a moment with us to unpack what it means. Truth-telling is an opportunity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to record evidence about past actions and share their culture, heritage and history with the broader community. Its not just about acknowledging the atrocities of the past, but is also an opportunity for First Nations peoples to share their culture and language with... their communities. A few years ago, NITV did an in-depth explainer article exploring why truth-telling is so important to Indigenous Australia, which you can view here: https://www.sbs.com.au//what-truth-telling-and-why-does-it We commit to truth telling as a key responsibility of all Australians. Will you join us? #OxfamPassTheMic #FirstPeoplesJustice #AlwaysWasAlwaysWillBe
14.01.2022 Today we want to raise the voice of an issue that seems to bubble along but does not go away: the destruction of Indigenous land for coal mining. We cant let this issue go quietly and let Indigenous hearts and voices be silenced. In Queensland, the government has extinguished the Wangan and Jagalingou peoples native title to pave the way for Adani to build a coal mine, a move that will decimate ancestral lands and waters. The Wangan and Jagalingou people are fighting to ...protect their country from Adani. Will you stand with them? 13.01.2022 As we plan for a post COVID-19 recovery, our government is looking for future energy solutions. Its time to take the plunge and commit to clean energy, rather than the old ways of destroying our environment and heritage land to mine fossil fuels. Recently, land councils, native title representative bodies and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations called for a moratorium on any further destruction of ancient, cultural sites. We stand with them % and call on o...ur government to listen, and commit to solutions led by First Peoples for a clean energy future. Our communities want laws that are based on the principles of empowerment, self-determination, First Nations decision making, greater transparency and free, prior and informed consent, said the joint statement. Not only should the lives of our people matter as much as those of non-Indigenous Australians, but our heritage and culture should also be equally important."
11.01.2022 Obrigadu barak! You have been busy transforming lives and creating brighter futures for some of our neighbours in Timor-Leste. As the newest country in Asia, Timor-Leste grapples with the challenges of inequality, rural poverty and vulnerability to climate change. But thanks to your support, together we can provide practical solutions to these issues like these garden and savings groups and help lift families out of poverty and thrive.
11.01.2022 The main issue that seems to stand out every time is that we need to have a say in what happens in our community what happens to our kids, the welfare of our kids, what our kids eat, when they go to the doctors. We need to have that power back as Aboriginal people, because for so long, we relied on the way we did things without a European settlement. And I think was the biggest common denominator for all the women we need to do things for ourselves. Stop making decisio...ns for us and throwing us into a system that clearly doesnt work and is making us dependent. Donna, Arrernte woman and Straight Talk alumni. 09.01.2022 Families in the Phillipines are bracing themselves as Typhoon Vamco makes landfall today. Vamco, also known as Typhoon Ulysses is the third typhoon that has hit the Philippines in as many weeks. Oxfam staff member Mirriam Solleza gives first-hand account of the situation on the ground in Quezon where she and her family reside: There are many houses totally washed out in my village. ... My house is submerged in floodwater and so our drinking water is contaminated. We don’t have safe drinking water in my village. Wells are completely submerged. 08.01.2022 Right now, millions of people around the world remain trapped in poverty, unable to access just economic opportunities. With your support, we can amplify the voices of those experiencing economic injustice, and help build sustainable economies for communities. Since joining the group, Umbelina has learned to save money and support small business, and acquired new g...ardening techniques to improve her harvests. "The best thing about joining the group is that before the group, we grew and sold vegetables, but we would just spend the money quickly. Now in the group we know how to save and we can plan for the future and save for our children," Umbelina says. "We are so happy to form this group. Now we are going to be able to realise our dreams." 08.01.2022 We believe that Biame is our creator, who created everything around us including us as a people. That this is our belief on how the river, which is now called the Murray, was created. Our word for it is Dungula which means mighty waters, doesnt mean Murray river which most people interpret it as. So Biame sent his wife down from the high country with a yam stick to dig for food and as she journeyed across the flat and waterless plains, he also sent his giant snake along to ...keep an eye on her. She walked for many weary miles drawing a line in the sand with a Yam stick, and behind her came the snake, sliding in and out of the line making the curves of the riverbed with his body. Then Biame spoke in a voice of thunder, lightning flashed, and rain fell, the water came flowing down the track the old woman and the snake had made. After many moons she came to the sea and went to sleep in a cave while her dogs ran off and kicked up the sandhills about the river mouth. - Greta, Barmah Keith Parsons/OxfamAUS #OxfamPassTheMic #FirstPeoplesJustice #AlwaysWasAlwaysWillBe

05.01.2022 Looking for some weekend viewing? We couldnt recommend this episode of The Point from NITV more highly. It takes a deep dive into the disproportionate impact the climate crisis is having on First Nations communities, as well as showcasing some of the deadly First Nations activists on the frontline of the fight for climate justice. If youre wondering exactly what climate justice means, its about acknowledging that the climate crisis impacts people and communit...ies, as well as environments and animals. There are many complex and connected social justice issues that intersect with the climate crisis, so the solutions to our changing climate need to be connected too - like looking at things from a gender equality angle, an intergenerational angle, a cultural angle and a human rights angle too.
