24.01.2022 The correct answer to the question we polled yesterday - UV can be increased by: a) water b) high alltitude c) snow d) clouds e) all of the above...... is e.) a...ll of the above. UV can reach you directly overhead, scattered though clouds/trees or reflected off snow and water. Be safe not sorry & check the free SunSmart app each day to find out the UV level and sun protection times for your location.

23.01.2022 Summer 2009-10 marked the 4th year of the National Skin Cancer Awareness Campaign, which concluded on 29 January 2010. The campaign was designed to educate Australian teenagers aged 14-17 years about the seriousness of, and their susceptibility to, skin cancer and increase the adoption and awareness of the five key sun protection behaviours: Seek shade ... Wear sun protective clothing that covers as much of your body as possible Put on a broad-brimmed hat that shades your face, neck and ears Wear wrap-around sunglasses Apply SPF30+ broad spectrum water resistant sunscreen every two hours. 23.01.2022 My name is Tanya and Im 22 years old and have been diagnosed with melanoma, not skin cancer that can be burnt off but a serious cancer that can be fatal if not treated in time. I was very lucky to have this removed from my back before it could spread any further. But, I have been left with a reminder - a 28cm scar across my back and a 15cm scar under my arm where my lymph nodes were removed. This is a very serious problem that should not be ignored. It doesnt matter if you have olive skin or fair skin, it could affect anyone if youre not careful.

22.01.2022 Many salves, pastes, poultices, and plasters have been applied directly to tumors with the hope of burning them away. Zinc oxide, bloodroot, and several other herbs are common ingredients. Some marketers claim that corrosive agents (sometimes called "black salves") can "draw out" the cancer. In recent years, scientists have found chemicals that can destroy certain superficial skin cancers. Click for more.

17.01.2022 Not corny advice ;-) Happy Friday everyone!

17.01.2022 Dont forget your sunscreen! Apply about one ounce (the size of a shot glass) of sunscreen to cover your entire body and reapply every two to three hours spent outdoors. And remember, water, sand, concrete and snow can reflect and increase the suns burning rays.

17.01.2022 Although its April, dont forget to wear your hat and sunscreen, as the days are still warm and sunny. UV index is still High.

14.01.2022 At the start of July we welcomed Dr Paul Cherian to our team of Dermatologists, he will be staying with us for the next year as he completes his fellowship. Also at the end of last month we said goodbye to Dr Kate Borchard who will be travelling around Europe for the next 6 months. She will return to our practice at the beginning of January.

13.01.2022 IPL treatments have been in the news this week and its a big warning for the unwary. IPL is almost identical to laser yet to operate a laser in WA the law says you have to be a registered doctor. It is weird that IPL can be used to treat people by anyone at all who is brave enough as there is now law covering IPL. That means no training is required and really bad things can happen such as deep burns that can scar permanently as well as eye damage that can lead to partial bl...indness. The recent case has left a poor woman with permanent scars after an "IPL Brazilian". At Oxford Day Surgery we take IPL treatments very seriously and only doctors are allowed to do the treatments. Our machines are certainly not bought on the internet and instead come from Denmark in Europe. They are medically state of the art and very safe. Whilst beauticians actively promote IPL treatments they often over-promise the benefits and under-deliver results so beware ! There are a range of conditions that respond well to IPL such as facial redness, capillaries and port wine stains and many conditions that do not and can even get worse like hormonal pigmentation on the face and leg veins. Hair removal can be done but there are lasers that are better than IPL. For peace of mind and your safety only have treatments done by doctors in reputable practices like ours.

11.01.2022 Today Tonight recently featured "Frownies" stick-on pads to reduce or eliminate wrinkles. Our dermatologists only recommend products that have been scientifically tested. Testimonials from users are great but cannot be relied on to prove something really works. Any skin stick-on product that is left on for hours or over night can cause allergic reactions similar to those from tapes and Band Aids. ...What you wont be told, is that wrinkles are caused by the collagen and elast...ic substance in the skin becoming loose and mushy and losing its tone as a result of sun damage, smoking, age and hereditary factors. It is hard to see how an external stick-on patch can permanently restore the tone and tightness of the collagen deep in the skin. Any benefit that is seen would be very temporary and probably related to some swelling caused by the irritation from the patch. As with most things its a case of buyer beware and not believing claims that seem to be too good to be true.See More See more

10.01.2022 Did you know that Private Health Fund exclusion policies for plastic and reconstructive surgery are hurting the public. If you have one of these policies in order to pay lower insurance premiums, you may be excluded from payment of medical costs for up to 1600 legitimate Medicare surgical procedures not just cosmetic surgery. These include important operations such as skin cancer removal and reconstruction and treatment of burns. Check with your health fund as you may be shocked to find out what is not covered...

08.01.2022 PHI Circular 29/12 - Round 15 (2010-11) and Round 16 (2011-12) National Hospital Cost Data Collection (NHCDC) for Private and Private Day Hospital Facilities Following the 11 April 2012 meeting between Independent Hospital Pricing Authority (IHPA) and Peak Private Bodies, Private Hospital Representatives and Private Health Consultants, the Department of Health and Aging has issued a circular containing some information regarding Round 15 and Round 16 of the National Hospital ...Cost Data Collection (NHCDC) for Private and Private Day Hospital Facilities. In short, the circular states that considering the timing of data collection, data output and production, the NHCDC Cost Report for Round 15 would fall outside a reasonable time frame. Therefore the Cost Report for Round 15 of the NHCDC for Private and Private Day Hospital Facilities will not be produced. Discussions are ongoing to confirm how the Cost Report for Round 16 and future Rounds of the NHCDC for Private and Private Day Hospital Facilities will be addressed. The IHPA further encourages all Private and Private Day Hospital Facilities to constructively consider how they can best proceed in regards to Round 16 and ongoing Rounds to ensure that Facilities expectations are met. The IHPA is setting up a contact telephone number to take your suggestions and enquiries in the near future and will release the number when the telephone line is available.
