23.01.2022 Interesting reading.

23.01.2022 An excellent video, as far as it goes. What if you're operating at a grass field? Runway slope? The current CASA rules (see the VFRG) are a mish-mash of sense and obscuration but the new Part 61 rules coming soon are much clearer and more onerous.... Haven't got approved data for a grass surface or runway slope then you will be limited to level, sealed runways. Haven't got approved data for a tailwind then, sorry, you must not takeoff or land with the usual slight downwind at Moorabbin. One day both 17 & 35 had a tailwind!

23.01.2022 Interesting reading and always topical. It is worth dissecting this statement: "By the book, a stall occurs when an airfoil’s angle of attack (AoA) exceeds a critical point, the one beyond which it’s capable of sustaining lift. Airflow over the wing separates and lift ends. That critical AoA is different for each wing." A wing is three-dimensional, an airfoil is two-dimensional. An airfoil is just one chordwise slice of a wing - the angle of attack and local airflow varies al...l across the span of the wing. i.e. go beyond simple statements about stalling of airfoils to consider how a whole wing may stall. It is not as simple as just the airfoil exceeding its critical angle of attack. "And third? Alwaysalways!be mindful of the slip/skid indicator," YES "and use rudder to keep the wings level." NO, NO ... "Let that black ball of the slip/skid indicator move to either extreme during a stall and you invite the mother of all loss-of-control events: a spin." Not necessarily, it depends on whether it is a skid or a slip!

23.01.2022 Don't forget! 7.00 pm tonight right here. Australian Flying's live and free seminar on what to do now you have a PPL. We've got the experts to answer your questions.

22.01.2022 Hope to see you tomorrow evening. If anyone has any input to my discussion points on aerobatics please let me know.

22.01.2022 The RAF's Manual of Flying is interesting reading.

21.01.2022 Have you considered UPRT? Upset prevention and recovery training is nearly guaranteed to help you become a more proficient pilot.

21.01.2022 A good start. Who will be participating in their first aerobatic contest this year?

19.01.2022 Coming up soon.

18.01.2022 It is worth respecting all "The Killers" in 91.103; but especially T/O landing performance (popular in NTSB reports too!) Read (and share) this excellent FREE article from Aviation Safety. #flySAFE #SAFEpilots

16.01.2022 ALACS has been postponed until sping.

15.01.2022 A minor amendment and improvement to the book after feedback from an aviation medical expert and aerobatic pilot. Incidentally, the book doesn't go all the way on this subject, just enough for those flying aircraft like the Super Decathlon.

15.01.2022 What's in your flight bag?

14.01.2022 "Always trust your instinct" This happened to a person I know but he had no inkling that "something was not right" until it wasn't. On a short local flight (second after an annual inspection) from Moorabbin Airport he noticed that the fuel gauge was indicating less than expected so he decided to return to the airport less than 10 nm away. Others would've been satisfied that they had departed with a lot of fuel and disregarded the gauge indication. He was shocked to see the ne...edle visibly moving closer to Empty as he, luckily, came in for a straight-in approach to Runway 35L (we recently discussed the engine failure scenario in this situation). Back on the ground he determined that there was only 4 litres remaining and no leak was found - until the fuel boost pump was turned on and the remaining fuel was dumped at the loose nut. I came across him at The Naked Racer a little while later and, noticing that he looked quite pale, asked him ....... I told him that he must immediately make two phone calls - the first to the ATSB and the second one to the mechanic telling him about the first call. On the other hand there are those like the pilot who reported that the engine on my aeroplane was significantly down on power so aborted their session of circuits. Fortunately I was involved in discussion with their instructor before it was taken to the mechanic. What were the RPM and MAP indications? 2300 RPM on take-off does indeed produce significantly less power than when the blue knob is pushed all the way in! "Always trust your instinct" Always? Everyone?

14.01.2022 A great pastime.

13.01.2022 One of the popular aviation magazines used to have an annual quiz to determine if one was a Total Aviation Person. Sadly the quiz was discontinued and the magazine changed it’s name, needless to say that I stopped reading it.

11.01.2022 Getting back into flying, some good advice here. Skip to 5:45 for Gerard Lappin showing the capabilities of the Cessna A152 Aerobat.

10.01.2022 Nice to be recognised by SAFE in the USA.

09.01.2022 Proposed IAC Intermediate Known for 2021. I wonder if I’ll be able to compete in the USA next year.

09.01.2022 Don't forget tonight is indeed the night! From 7.00 pm right here we're conducting our flying instructor webinar with a panel of professional instructors ready ...to give their thoughts on a range of issues and provide insights into the instructing career. If you've ever had the idea you might like to instruct, or just want to get into the heads of the right-seaters, join us right here at 7.00 pm tonight! See more

08.01.2022 An interesting article.

08.01.2022 This is how the factory moves their airplanes on the ground. A towbar from skyshop.com.au is especially useful when solo.

07.01.2022 I had heard about this but not seen photos! This is why I am fussy about closing vents and windows when finished for the day.

04.01.2022 Check out SAW's latest blog post about aerodynamics knowledge. We can all stand to brush up on our knowledge, and correlating that knowledge to pilot action is the key to better flying. Read the post on SAW's website: https://www.specializedaeroworks.com//better-aerodynamics-

03.01.2022 FREE just for you - the March edition of the UK Flyer Magazine is online now. Great reading. Check out the low level aerobatics accident.

03.01.2022 The Ozaeros course starts people off with a more simple explanation than this, they can refine it later. CASA’s aerobatic endorsement doesn’t require barrel rolls so we quickly move on to the other manoeuvres. The barrel roll doesn’t feature in aerobatic competitions either. It is a good intro to flying in three dimensions and is a fun manoeuvre, especially pleasant for passengers.

02.01.2022 Excellent advice here.

01.01.2022 A bit of a cleanup and update paperwork for HEZ. Need to get underneath the belly for a more thorough clean.
